Nary Kitchen Cooking Class in Battambang, Cambodia
Here is a short video of my experience cooking at Nary Kitchen in Battambang, Cambodia
Cambodian Cooking Class in Battambang, Cambodia (Nary's Kitchen Khmer Cooking School)
In this travel video we head over to Nary's Kitchen for a special Khmer cooking course learning how to make Cambodian cuisine such as Amok, Lok Lak and Spring Rolls. Our class first began with a trip to a local wet market where we loaded up on cooking supplies as well as learned about the different kinds of ingredients used in typical Khmer cooking. Upon returning we ventured straight into the kitchen where we spent the next two hours preparing food, cooking and ultimately serving up our own tasty meals consisting of Amok, Lok Lak and deep fried spring rolls. One of the most fascinating aspects of the cooking course had to do with making our own curry paste. We pounded away in a stone bowl with a mortar for nearly 10 minutes to get the perfect consistency. We both really enjoyed the level of detail provided by our cooking hosts Toot and Nary. Overall, this was an excellent experience and for $10 it also represented great value for our backpacking budget lifestyle. We highly recommend you check it out.

This morning we've got a special activity planned. We are taking a cooking class - a Khmer cooking class. I'm all thumbs in the kitchen but I'm going to give it my best shot.
Right now we're at the local market and we are going to pickup some ingredients for the cooking class and it is raining.
It's a red curry paste and this is a chili paste. They are fresh vegetables.
And then they say ginger. It is not ginger. It is galangal.
Coconut and then she grates it to get a coconut milk.
So we've got our aprons on and we're ready to cook.
Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville they converse and they change how to make fish Amok. They make shortcuts for three or four minutes.
I'm trying to slice lemongrass.
These are our ingredients so far. They smell really good.
What might you be doing? I'm just crushing the ingredients. You're making the curry paste here. It looks so good.
We're really earning our meal here. We're making our curry paste. We've been pounding away for almost ten minutes now.
Now we're slicing up the snake fish. I still haven't cut my finger.
Here is our Amok. We made a little curry type thing and put it into the banana bowl that we've prepared and now it is going to be steamed.
Here is the meal we prepared today. We have spring rolls with a nice dipping sauce, lok lak (a kind of beef meat) and over here Amok, which is fish in a coconut cream sauce.
I'm going to try my Lok Lak. Let's see how this turned out. It is really nice. I cooked it myself.
I'm going to try one of the spring rolls we made. I still can't believe I didn't burn down the kitchen and it is delicious by the way.
We just finished our cooking class. I didn't cause an International Incident. I didn't burn down the kitchen, so overall it was a success. If anyone wants to come the Kitchen is called Nary's Kitchen and they have a morning and an evening class. It costs ten dollars a person.
This restaurant and cooking school is run by Nary and her husband Toot. They will take you to the market and you will spend an hour there just looking at different vegetables, picking up ingredients and then afterwards you come back to the school you cook for two hours and then you get to enjoy your meal. We highly recommend it. Excellent food.
This is part of our Travel in Cambodia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Khmer / Cambodian culture, arts, food, religion and people.

Things to do in Battambang, Cambodia - Cooking Classes and Bat Caves
Fantastic couple of days in Battambang - we wished we'd stayed longer then two nights. Its' very cheap here even for Cambodia and with very little western influence. The gym here was 23p!!!!
• Get to the Bat Caves for around 6pm not earlier as suggested by the locals. you'll only be waiting around for the best part of an hour and you won't miss anything because the bats stream out for around 40minutes.
• If you plan to climb to the top of Phnom Samphou you don't need to pay for a motorbike taxi when you the get there. The walk is stunning and takes around 35 minutes with breaks to get to the top. Whatever you're told
• Take part in Nary's Cooking Class. Its only $10 per person whereas everywhere else in Cambodia charges at least $20 per person. You can find it on google!
• The rest of our tips and other things to do in Battambang head to our blog at allgonerogue.com

EP55 | Cambodian cooking course at Nary’s Kitchen
Having eaten at Nary’s kitchen and been impressed with the food we decided we needed to learn how to cook the classic Cambodian dishes – so we did a cooking class with them! It was a fantastic afternoon, Jonny and Sasha joined us, but no one else signed up – so it felt like a private class for the four of us! We started with a trip to the market, where a fish escaped “jail break” yelled our chef as Alex captured it, we got to smell all the local herbs and spices, and a special treat for Alex, he got to taste crickets and grasshoppers – just a tasty snack apparently! Finally it was time to get cooking, we made the classics – Fish Amok, Spring Rolls, Beef Loklak, as well as a desert of banana and coconut milk. The cooking class at Nary’s kitchen was fantastic – we had such a great time, the chef was great at teaching, but also had a great sense of humour too, and it was especially good value (this was not sponsored – we just had a genuinely great day!).

Tuk-tuk ride around Battambang, Cambodia (Cambodian countryside auto rickshaw ride)
In our latest travel video we hop on a tuk-tuk for a tour around the rural areas (countryside) just outside of Battambang, Cambodia where pass farmland, rural villages, local markets and lush green vegetation. Our auto rickshaw driver was such a friendly outgoing individual who helped show us numerous attractions. Overall, it's a great way to explore the countryside areas which are too far from the city to be comfortably explored by bicycle. As always, we recommend getting up early to beat the heat and to visit the markets during the initial flurry of morning activity.

Auto rickshaws are a common means of public transportation in many countries in the world. Also known as a three-wheeler, Samosa, tempo, tuk-tuk, trishaw, auto, rickshaw, autorick, bajaj, rick, tricycle, mototaxi, baby taxi or lapa in popular parlance, an auto rickshaw is a usually three-wheeled cabin cycle for private use and as a vehicle for hire. It is a motorized version of the traditional pulled rickshaw or cycle rickshaw. Auto rickshaws are an essential form of urban transport in many developing countries, and a form of novelty transport in many Eastern countries.
In Cambodia, the term tuk-tuk (Khmer: ទុកទុក) is used to refer to a motorcycle with a cabin attached to the rear. Cambodian cities have a much lower volume of automobile traffic than Thai cities, and tuk-tuks are still the most common form of urban transport. At the temple complex of Angkor, for example, tuk-tuks provide a convenient form of transport around the complex for tourists. One can hire a tuk-tuk and driver by the day.
Siem Reap tuk-tuks are generally of the style of motorcycle and trailer. Phnom Penh tuk-tuks are by contrast one piece. They are the front end of a motorcycle consisting of steering, tank and engine/gearbox with a covered tray mounted at the back. The power is transferred by chain to an axle mounted to the modified rear fork which drives the two rear wheels. Suspended upon the rear fork is an open cabin with an in-line seat on each side. This arrangement can carry 6 people at ease, with their luggage in the leg space. It is not unusual to see these vehicles greatly overloaded, especially in outer suburbs and around markets.
Currently, Tuk Tuk in Cambodia is being developed to be more convenient and safer. It is also becoming a popular form of transportation for Phnom Penh residents:

Visit The Famous Spring Roll Makers in Battambang Province
This video started with a drone shot of Peam Ek Commune, Ek Phnom District, Battambang Province, Cambodia. Our destination is to visit the spring-roll-wrapper makers that we visited last year. The woman from last year is pregnant, her sister and daughter is working on it. It's a family business from long-time ago. They make great spring-roll wrappers and also make fresh spring-rolls and fry spring-rolls. We enjoyed them making the spring-roll-wrappers and making fresh-spring-rolls & fry-spring-rolls. We call it Nem ណែម but the word in English is Spring-Roll. It's good to try Nem and drink coconut.
