Bussaco Forest. Portugal
The Bussaco Forest is renowned by arborists worldwide for its incredible array of exotic trees and species of rare flora collected all over the world by Portuguese Navigators. The Monastery of the Holy Cross, dating from 1630, the diversity of chapels, hermitages and belvederes in the forest, and the walking paths through the Stations-of-The-Cross, as well as all the landscape architecture introduced in the middle of the 19th century by Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, fore last Queen of Portugal, and daughter of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, with the creation of the Valley of the Ferns and the construction of the Cold Fountain, still exemplify the rarefied atmosphere of serenity and peace of this very special place. The strong aromas of conifers, hedges and flora, combined in the early morning, make the air in Bussaco just incredible and unforgettable. If you can find peace and romantic tranquility there, then you may never find it anywhere...

Bussaco (or Buçaco in its old spelling) is a magical forest with around 700 varieties of trees. Many of them were brought to Europe by Portuguese explorers from Africa and the New World, including 300 exotic species such as Himalayan pines and Mexican cedars, is a delightful refuge of cypress groves, ferns, statues, fountains, and formal gardens. It's also home to the Palace Hotel do Bussaco.
The Cruz Alta (1795 feet) is the highest point on the mountain range which commands a magnificent view over the Serra da Estrela mountain, the Mondego River Valley and the Atlantic.
Hot springs of the village of Luso became known throughout Portugal due to its healing properties. Soon after, spa resorts were developed, and tourists came flocking into town during the summer months.
Aside from this, Luso, Portugal is also famous for its spring water. Currently, Luso spring water is being marketed as Luso’s Bottled Mineral Water, and many consider this as one of the best in Portugal.

Pluses:
Superb opportunity and value for money that is sadly unappreciated by everybody who complains about some irrelevant, minor details that spoil their snooty 5-star expectations. Thank god this place is a tiny bit rundown, which adds great charm and lets us, who actually can appreciate it, appreciate it affordably! Thank god this place is so full of character and isn't updated and converted to a posh and insanely expensive retreat that only a few could afford! Loved every moment of it - the emptiness in the off-season, the comfort of the room, its outdated yet photogenic furniture, the absolutely scrumptious breakfast. WiFi worked perfectly fine in the room and all public areas and was fast. Baby cot was available. The surrounding park is magnificent.
The staff was very friendly. The location and castle is awesome, has a nice restaurant and our room(s) (Junior suite) were located on the best spot of the castle. Don't miss it if you are in the neighbourhood, you will not forget this place and will be wondering about the glory of the builders and early residents. Do not expect a modern hotel were everything works. It is an old building. There is noise of the old radiators or cooling, but for us that is also the charm of this place. It is really an amazing place and you are sleeping in a museum. So is this a bad point? For us it was not. You will be back in the surroundings of the rich and famous of the 20th century.
Minuses:
The noise in the night of the old radiators, air conditioning or water pipes. But it is also part of the beauty, you really go back in time here.

???? Palácio Nacional do Buçaco - Jardins - Portugal

Abandoned Houses on NATIONAL PARK - Bussaco Forest
Don't miss any videos, subscribe to the channel:
In this video I explore the Bussaco National Forest (Mata do Bussaco). This national park is open and protected. It has about 250 tree species. Its construction was completed between the years 1630-1644 and has about 105 hectares. It's the richest national forest in natural, architectural and cultural heritage. In this video I show the gardens, the Valley of the Fetuses (Vale dos Fetos), the Sacred Way (Via Sacra), the Santa Cruz do Buçaco Convent (Convento), the Doors (as Portas), the various Lakes, the Palace Hotel Bussaco and the Cold Fountain (Fonte Fria). But beyond all this, and with the main purpose of this video, I search for the abandoned houses and buildings in the park.
To entre the park is free on foot, by car you pay 5 euros which are for the maintenance of this park.

Buçaco Hotel Palace Bussaco aerial view - Cruz alta - 4K Ultra HD
The last palace of Portuguese Kings was transformed into the most legendary Hotel in Portugal and into one of the most beautiful and historical hotels of the world; a symbol of the art of hospitality since 1917. The majestic and bucolic Buçaco National Forest, the botanical ex-libris of this region, with its religious and romantic military past provides the hotel with the perfect landscape framing for the Buçaco Hotel Palace in its splendorous neo-gothic style; the dream of a visionary King that came true, when he built the most truly magical fairy tale castle in an enchanted forest.

Mata do Bussaco Walk About
PALACE: Mata do Bussaco
The Bussaco Palace was built between 1888 and 1907. The palace, commissioned by King Charles I of Portugal as a royal retreat, embodies the contemporaneous architectural fashion known as castle romanticism ( German: Burgenromantik) and all the national enthusiasm for the Age of the Discoveries.
At the far end of Bussaco Mountain, where the highest range is 547 meters high, you’ll find Bussaco Woods, surrounded by a high wall with eleven entrance doors.
Buçaco Battle
During the Third French Invasion, Buçaco proved to be a decisive place in the unfolding events. On 27 September 1810, English and Portuguese troops led by General Wellesley united in the Battle of Buçaco to fight the French troops led by Massena. Enjoying the defensive characteristics of the field and with 50.000 men on his side, Wellesley stropped the Napoleonic offensive which was on its way to Lisbon. This a hard blow to the Napoleonic forces, but Portuguese and English troops were boosted and encouraged. This confrontation was essential to future military events which determined the final expulsion of the French troops. Buçaco still keeps the aura of glory and courage of Portugal, a country that resisted the invaders.

Convento de Santa Cruz / Convent of Santa Cruz - Buçaco (Portugal)
THE CONVENT OF SANTA CRUZ of Buçaco located in the Buçaco National Forest, Luso parish, municipality of Mealhada. In 1628, the Buçaco Forest was given to the Order of Discalced Carmelites, to build their Desert in Portugal. According to the Carmelites, desert designated a retreat and penitence house, where the religious could isolate themselves in seclusion, away from the comforts and worldly requests. The regular monastic life began there about 1630, however, the solemn consecration of the monastery and the first Mass took place only in 1639 and the Desert took the name of Convent of Santa Cruz of Bussaco. The church dominates an area without cloister recovering the organization of the mythical idea of the Temple of Jerusalem. From the old monastery of the Discalced Carmelites only remains the façade and the church. Despite being used in other buildings, it is in the Convent of Santa Cruz of Buçaco that embrechado (0:14) is evident: quite colorful murals mosaics that vaguely suggest the art of the Far East. The embrechados are made with small fragments of quartz, basalt, ferruginous slags and cork.

Palacio do Buçaco (HD)
