The National Library of Malta (Maltese: Bibljoteka Nazzjonali ta' Malta), often known as the Bibliotheca (Maltese: Bibljoteka), is a reference library in Republic Square, Valletta, Malta. It was founded by Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc in 1776 out of the collections of the knight Louis Guérin de Tencin. It has been a legal deposit library since 1925, and it has the largest collection of Melitensia along with that of the University of Malta. The library also contains the archives of the Order of St. John, the Università of Mdina and the Università of Valletta.
The library is housed in a late 18th-century neoclassical building in the city centre, close to the Grandmaster's Palace.

The Saga of the Skaubryn Maltese folk song recorded National Library of Australia 1997
A Maltese folk song by Georgina Camenzuli and her husband Nazzareno (Is-Simenza), recorded for the National Library of Australia, in 1997 by Barry York and Kevin Bradley at the Camenzuli's home in Fairfield Heights, Sydney.
The song is an example of 'ghana tal-fatt' or a 'fact based song'.
Also performing are guitarists Joseph Mifsud (Il-Koko) and Vince Gauci (Tar-Rabat).
The 'Skaubryn' was a migrant ship that caught fire and sank in the Indian Ocean en route to Australia in 1958. No-one drowned but an elderly man died from a heart attack. It was a traumatic and extremely frightening and dangerous experience, needless to say, especially for those, like the Camenzuli's, who were travelling with their young children.
They eventually made it to Sydney on the 'Roma'.
The recording of the song is part of an oral history interview held and preserved at the National Library in Canberra, Australia.
I am advised that Mr. and Mrs. Camenzuli are no longer alive but they indicated copyright ownership of the song when they completed the Rights Agreement for the Library.
I wish to thank Mark Caruana, historian of Sydney, for making the session possible in 1997.
The song is in the Maltese language.
The Saga of the Skaubryn originally appeared on the twin-CD package 'Maltese Voices Down Under', produced in 1998 by Victoria University of Technology, Melbourne, and the National Library of Australia.

As Malta’s capital city, it’s no surprise that there are many things to do in Valletta. The city was founded by the Knights of Malta in 1566, who left behind lots of points of interest. There’s everything from formidable fortifications and lush gardens to pretty palaces and family-owned shops.
In this episode, I capture some of Valletta’s grander attractions, as well as the smaller details that make this Mediterranean city so appealing.

Through the City Gate of Valletta,
past the formidable walls
built by the Knights of St. John,
you will find dramatic architecture
and lively festivals
characterized by color
and lots of music.
Valletta was established in 1566 and designed in a grid pattern,
but it has enough flourishes
to keep things interesting.
As Malta’s capital city,
Valletta plays host to the country’s prime minister.
It also hosts international summits
and the Maltese Parliament,
which was designed by Renzo Piano.
Much of Valletta, to include the opera house,
was destroyed during World War Two.
But, Valletta has seen a rebirth in recent years,
injecting lots of life into the city.
There are many details to look for in Valletta,
including ornamental door-knockers
and the Maltese cross, a symbol of the Knights of St. John.
You will also spot statues tucked into niches
and olive trees dancing in the breeze.
Valletta’s location on a rugged peninsula
means that it has dramatic views of the Mediterranean
and of Malta’s coastal fortifications.
The Upper Barrakka Gardens
are one of the best places to soak up these views.
While you’re there, have a coffee break and maybe a cat nap.
Afterwards, stroll past colorful buildings,
up the city’s hilly streets,
until you reach a statue of Valletta’s namesake.
You might notice that almost everywhere you walk,
you’ll see enclosed, wooden balconies called “gallariji.”
Some are painted in vibrant hues,
while others have laundry drying in the Mediterranean breeze.
On Republic Street, you’ll find the Grandmaster’s Palace.
It was built in the 1560s. Throughout the centuries,
it has housed the knights’ grandmasters, British colonial governors, and Parliament.
Today, it’s the office of the President of Malta.
Near the Grandmaster’s Palace is the National Library.
It was the last official building constructed by the knights
and it’s a great place to delve deeper into Maltese history.
Even though Valletta is a capital city,
life here moves at a slower pace.
Locals take time for long chats,
and stroll the sun-drenched lanes,
sometimes, with a feisty Chihuahua in tow.
Horse-drawn carriages carrying tourists are a common sight,
while fishing and seaside barbecues are also popular.
Valletta has just under 6,000 residents
and still has family-owned shops.
They sell everything from fresh produce
and hand-made filigree jewelry
to sweet treats.
Many shopkeepers speak both Maltese and English, which are the country’s official languages.
Fort St. Elmo was the scene of intense fighting during the Great Siege of 1565.
Today, it houses the National War Museum.
Nearby, are the Lower Barrakka Gardens,
where you’ll find fragrant Oleander flowers,
a few palm trees,
and stunning views of Fort St. Angelo and the Three Cities.
This is a superb spot to watch the clouds roll by,
to read a good book,
or perhaps enjoy a picnic
while taking in
incredible scenes of Valletta.

Republic Street, Valletta and Fort St. Elmo Exhibition
A stroll down Republic Street from City Gate to Fort St. Elmo, where we visit Heritage Malta's exhibition commemorating the 450th anniversary of the city. The exhibition continues in the National Library (Bibliotheca), where one can see some important original documents related to the birth and development of Valletta (no photography is allowed in the library). Along the way we are accompanied by the music of the Reading Scottish Pipe Band, that happened to be playing in Republic Street on 10th September 2016.

Valletta is My Orchestra
This is the official video related to the new corporate identity which narrates the experience of a boy named Ian during a visit to Valletta with his grandfather. The story is a reflection of the life of other children and young people from Valletta and other towns and villages in Malta and Gozo.
While the boy and his grandfather walk the streets of Valletta, pass by squares and visit historical buildings and shops, the boy notices, listens to and visualises the beauty of Valletta, its colours, sounds and characteristics that make it a unique city.
Th experience of culture reflected in the city’s life, inspires Ian to interpret traditional aspects in his life in a new way and consequently the video ‘Valletta is my Orchestra – Ian the Musician’, in which the boy becomes the main protagonist, came about.

RAF Outposts of Empire ‘RAF Malta’ tells the story of the RAF on Malta from its humble beginnings during the First and second World Wars, the Cold War and up to the final departure of British forces in 1979.
Interviews with veterans and historians reveal how the Island became an ‘Outpost of Empire’ during the Napoleonic Wars and the Head Quarters of the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean fleet.
First-hand accounts reveal how Malta’s people, the Allied servicemen and women suffered, starved and eventually overcame, the two-and-a-half-year Italian and German ‘Blitz’ during World War Two.
How The ‘Santa Maria’ and other convoys ran the gauntlet to resupply ‘Fortress Malta’ delivering the Spitfires that broke the siege and earned the Island’s people the George Cross.
The Cold War is recalled by the aircrews who flew and supported NATO anti-submarine patrols in Shackleton, Canberra and Nimrod aircraft tracking down Soviet shipping and peering over the ‘Iron Curtain’ to photograph activities in Soviet Block, the Persian Gulf and Middle East.
Malta’s RAF history is shown in rare archive film and images from the World-famous Imperial War Museum, Malta National Archives, Bay Retro picture library and many other personal, previously unseen, films and images illustrating the memories of those who served on and flew from, Malta.
The final months are remembered with sadness as the British finally withdrew after 160 years and Malta became an independent country and a thriving member of the European Community.
Restoring the past, embracing the present, building the future.
The premises housing Caffe Cordina have a long and interesting history. They were known during the rule of the order of the Knights of St. John as the ‘Casa del Commun Tesoro’, namely the Treasury of the Order. During the early days of British rule the building was appropriated to various public offices and later converted into the Grand Hotel. At the beginning of thecentury it was taken over by the Casino Maltese and in World War II the block suffered heavy damage during the blitz of 1942.
Inside, the beautiful decor is highlighted by the unique vaulted ceiling which is embellished with paintings by the renowned Maltese painter Giuseppe Cali. The exquisite paintings symbolize the previous rulers of Malta and the diverse eras in Malta’s history. The Cordina family recently commissioned the final three paintings which represent Malta’s Independence, the birth of the Republic and joining the European Union.

I'm in the National Library ... shhhh ...
Have you ever realised how everyone else seems to know things about you that you barely ever noticed yourself. I mean: if you talk funny or have a tendency not to look at
people in their eyes or maybe you walk in a bouncy way or you
always leave things for the last minute or you're losing hair on top of your head you might surely know these things about you, but believe it or not many people and I'm including people you barely know like possibly the barmaid at the corner cafe have probably noticed these things way before you did and if not these ones probably others, that still have to catch up with!
This is Valletta's main road, Republic Street
I have to give a speech!
The latest thing I discovered about myself in the past weeks ... is how scruffy I have become
To discover the real Valletta you have to go more to the sides and discover the narrow streets. You have the old, the new, the forgotten, the corporate ... everything
is one next to each other. It's such an amazing place!
This is one of the many little gems that are hidden in the narrow streets of Valletta.
Everything has been kept like it was in 1965.

In the past few months, Abi, Emma and I have been working on a project along with 45 primary school children of year 6 we have written and illustrated a book containing three very creative short story.
We're going to Valletta!
The presentation is in the seat of government, you can't go in shorts and crocks. There's going to be ministers, there's going to be official people all wearing suits you can't go dressed like that!
No scruffy clothes!
Abi, Emma and I and the 45 children with their parents, teachers and headmaster had
all reached Valletta and everything was going fine ...
when this happened
thinking that these shoes are cheap quality, then you're wrong!
They're fine leather and once belonged to my great-great-great uncle ...
who behind nothing else but these!
Valletta, which the Maltese call il-Belt, meaning the city, is the capital of Malta and a UNESCO heritage site.
She was named after the French Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Vallette. This guy here.
