Recently, I paid a visit to Tugu Negara, the National Monument memorial park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The National Monument (Tugu Negara) is made in remembrance of the fallen ‘soldiers’ during the fight for freedom to independence in Malaysia.
It represents the fallen soldiers during the 2nd World War, when Japan occupied this part of Southeastern Asia. Many Malaysians would have learned about Tugu Negara in their history textbooks at school and even the old one ringgit malaysia note had a picture of the iconic sculpture on it.
Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, was inspired to build a monument after visiting the Marine Corps War Memorial in Virginia, United States in Oct 1960. Tugu Negara was built for 1.5 million Ringgit malaysia and was officially unveiled on Feb 8, 1966.
The monument was designed by the late Tan Sri Felix de Weldon, an American sculptor of Austrian origin who had worked on the Marine Corps War Memorial. The construction of Tugu Negara began in 1963. The bronze sculpture depicts a group of seven soldiers. In the middle stands a soldier in a victorious pose, his right hand holding a Malaysian flag. The height of the monument is 15m, making it the biggest freestanding bronze sculpture in the world.
Right next to the National Monument you will find Plaza Tugu Negara. Here you will find a couple of small shops where you can buy drinks and snacks. Right opposite Plaza Tugu Negara there is a small park with some nice benches covered by trees.
Probably the easiest way to get to the National Monument is by taxi or Grab Car Application. Another option is to take the Kuala Lumpur, Hop-on-Hop-off bus, from Jalan Bukit Bintang. One of the stops is the National Monument.
You can explore the area for a bit and then take the next bus to continue the city tour of Kuala Lumpur.
The cheapest way is to take the Metro to the Old Railway Station. From there it takes nearly 20 minutes walk to the entrance of the tugu negara. The Opening Hours of national Monument is 7am to 6pm and there is no Entrance fee.

The National Monument, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The National Monument is a sculpture that commemorates those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom, principally against the Japanese occupation during World War 2 and the Malayan Emergency, which lasted from 1948 until 1960. It is located in the Federal capital, Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian Houses of Parliament are situated near the monument.
It is the world's tallest bronze freestanding sculpture grouping.
The concept of a national monument was mooted by Malaysia's first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, who was inspired by the Marine Corps War Memorial during his visit to the United States in October 1960, before personally meeting Felix de Weldon for a favour to design the monument.
The National Monument was completed and officially opened on 8 February 1966, by Ismail Nasiruddin of Terengganu, then Yang di-Pertuan Agong. It was proclaimed a memorial park dedicated to the 11,000 people who died during the 12-year Malayan Emergency (1948–1960). Thereafter, a wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the monument every 31 July on Warriors Day. De Weldon was later conferred with the title Tan Sri, the Malaysian equivalent of a high-ranking knighthood.
On 27 August 1975, the monument suffered extensive damage due to an explosion set off by a communist terrorist. It has since been restored to its original state with the renovated statues unveiled on 11 May 1977. A fence was then erected and the complex was declared a protected area between sunset and dawn. Every day at dawn, a soldier raises the national flag and lowers it at dusk.
