Merdeka! Crash Course in Malaysian History at the Muzium Negara in Kuala Lumpur
The Muzium Negara is the national museum of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Constructed in 1963, it tells the story of Malaysia from the paleolithic and neolithic ages through the era of the Malay kingdoms (with a particular focus on Malacca), on into the colonial period as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British fought for control of the Malay peninsula and the Malacca strait, and goes right up to the struggle for independence (Merdeka!) and the birth of a modern industrial nation and economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia.
Okay, that's a mouthful. But I love museums of all kinds, and I hoped the Muzium Negara would at least give me a basic grounding in Malaysian history, so I can better understand the modern country and what I see around me on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. And the museum did exactly that. It offers a great introduction to Malaysia, and it is great value at 5 ringgit.
Cameras are allowed inside, which is nice, so I was able to capture some video of the 4 different galleries. (Well, 3 of them. My camera failed me in Gallery D.) The museum is also very easy to get to now that the Sungai-Buloh-Kajang MRT line is open. Depending on your starting point, you could just go to KL Sentral and then walk through the connecting tunnels to Muzium Negara, or ride directly on the SBK line to the subway stop of the same name: Muzium Negara.
Finally, if you want some help sorting through the exhibits and making sense of it all, show up before 10 a.m. for a free guided tour in English. I was too late for that, but I heard that it is very good.

Orang Asli Craft Museum Kuala Lumpur Malaysia | Tourism Malaysia
Orang Asli Craft Museum in Kuala Lumpur showcases the arts and handicrafts of the Orang Asli people, the aboriginal communities who dwell mostly in rural areas across the Malaysian Peninsula.
The museum explains how there are 18 different tribes of Orang Asli divided into 3 main groups, the Negrito, the Senai and the Proto Malay.
The Orang Asli are famed for their handicrafts, particularly the wood carving skills by the Mah Meri and Jah Hut tribes who like to carve masks and figures and these are highly valued by collectors.
In addition to statues and masks there are small Sepili figures used in the traditional medicine system of the Jah Hut, blowpipes and ornate bamboo containers for holding blowpipe darts, hunting and fishing traps, musical instruments, native clothing, pouches and containers made from screw pine, rattan baskets and trays, palm leaf ornaments and spiritual decorations and even coffins made from bamboo.
This is a small but very interesting museum with material that you won’t see elsewhere except perhaps in the other Orang Asli museum in Gombak. The quality of the carvings is very high.
How to Get to Orang Asli Craft Museum
It is located on the lower ground floor of the Malay-World Ethnology Museum, a dedicated building within the grounds of the National Museum.
It is within walking distance of KL Sentral station (0.5km).

Planetarium Negara KL | The National Planetarium Kuala Lumpur | Tourists Attraction in Malaysia
The National Planetarium (Planetarium Negara) is conveniently located in Kuala Lumpur's Lake Gardens, the green lung in the heart of the city.
The building, which was opened to the public in 1993 and has been cleverly designed to resemble a blue-domed mosque, sits on a small hill between the Bird Park and the National Museum.
To be honest the exhibits inside are not that impressive but there are a few highlights. There is a mock-up of the interior of the International Space Station showing the sleeping and toilet arrangements. Quite interesting!
The space suit of the first Malaysian astronaut is on display together with examples of the ready meal packs he took into space containing Malaysian delights such as Nasi Lemak!
There is supposed to be an observatory and telescope in the tower which looks like a minaret but it is was either closed down during our visit or we failed to notice it.
The main highlight of the visit for us was undoubtedly the Omnimax-style film projected on the interior roof of the dome. Seated on comfortable reclining cinema chairs the huge screen gives a panoramic viewing effect that enhances the content of the film.
How to get to National Planetarium
Address: 53 Jalan Perdana 50480 Kuala Lumpur
Telephone: 03 22735484
Being located in Lake Gardens, you could include a visit to the National Planetarium as part of my Lake Gardens walking tour.
Taxi or self-driving is probably the best way to reach the Lake Gardens.
If you want to travel by train the closest station (KTM Komuter) is the historic old Kuala Lumpur station and from there you can walk.

National Museum of Malaysia
Located in the heart of the city of Kuala Lumpur, the National Museum (Muzium Negara) built in the style of a Malay palace is the guardian of the nation’s history. The recently upgraded galleries present an exciting and innovative approach to exploring the history of Malaysia from prehistoric times to the present. Muzium Negara was officially opened by His Majesty, the Third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Putra Al-Haj Ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail on 31st August 1963. The museum building, apart from being stimulative from the point of tradition also presents a panoramic view of the development of Malaysia, as depicted by the two large murals of Italian glass mosaic, which extend across the museum facade. Muzium Negara is a repository of Malaysia's rich cultural and historical heritage. The three storied structure is 109.7 meters long, 15.1 meters wide and 37.6 meters at the central point. The museum houses four exhibition galleries featuring Malaysia's history and rich cultural diversity. Muzium Negara endeavours through its collections, exhibitions, research, publications, educational and public programmes, to inspire a broader understanding of our nation and her multiracial people.
