National Palace oin San Salvador of El Salvador
The idea of building a place like this emerged during the administration of General Gerardo Barrios who decided to begin the works in 1866 being completed in 1870.
It was Don Idelfonso Marin in company with Jose Dolores Melara who was in charge of the construction of the palace. They could have hardly imagined that a fire would destroy the building a couple of years later, in November 1889.
After this unfortunate incident took place, a decision was made to build a new National Palace. This time it was engineer José Emilio Alcaine who designed it.
The current palace was built with materials coming from countries such as Germany and Italy among others, and Jose Maria Peralta Lagos directed the construction. Works began in 1905 and were not completed until six years later.
Nowadays this palace has a hundred and one secondary halls and four main halls known for its different colors namely yellow, pink, blue and red. Given the importance of this building, the government declared it National Monument in July 1980.

It began construction on November 3, 1911, by the French architect Daniel Beylard; and inaugurated March 1, 1917. It is of French Renaissance style with modern touches. It was decorated by the Italian architect Lucio Capellaro, and its Great Hall is one of the most beautiful and elegant in Central America.
We will get a chance to view the El Salvador Symphony Orchestra (Orquesta Sinfónica de El Salvador; OSES) practicing for a concert; it is the national symphony orchestra of El Salvador. Founded in 1922, by Paul Müller, it is one of Central America's oldest orchestras.
El Salvador is a small Central American nation. It's known for its Pacific Ocean beaches, surf spots and mountainous landscape. Its Ruta de Las Flores is a winding route past coffee farms, rainforests with waterfalls and towns like Juayúa, with its weekend food festival, plus Ataco, home to vivid murals. The capital, San Salvador, with a dramatic backdrop of volcanoes, has numerous museums and the National Theater.

El Salvador: Nayib Bukele sworn in as president of El Salvador
Businessman and former San Salvador mayor Nayib Bukele was sworn in as the new President of El Salvador at ceremony held at the National Palace on Saturday.
Bukele, the son of a local imam of Palestinian descent, chose to swear on a Bible held by his wife Gabriela Rodriguez.
The incoming leader promised a 'new era' of government under his watch.
Heads of state from the region Jimmy Morales (Guatemala), Carlos Alvarado (Costa Rica), Juan Carlos Varela (Panama), Danilo Medina (Dominican Republic) and Evo Morales (Bolivia) attended the inauguration.
At age 37, Bukele becomes the youngest person to ever become the head of the government in the Central American country.
The election of Bukele, who hails from the Grand Alliance for National Unity (GANA) party, marks the first time neither traditional ruling parties Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) nor Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) candidates have been elected.

All in all it was quite a surprise !

EL SALVADOR: 600 FORMER SOLDIERS RIOT FOR SECOND DAY

For a second consecutive day, disgruntled former soldiers in El Salvador have taken to the streets, demanding the government make good on its promise of money and land.
Veterans protested violently, threatening to derail the three-year-old peace process that brought an end to more than a decade of bloody civil war.
Former soldiers marched on the Presidential Palace in the capital, San Salvador. After Tuesday's rioting, security was heavy.
They say the government's gone back on its promises of land and money for army veterans.
This ex-soldier gives a typical view.

Because I really tell you, when there was war, we were just trained. We were told 'you're going to fight' but we were never told what we were going to fight for. Every day we pledged allegiance to the flag. What has happened is that those who died have been set aside. Who has been benefited? A group of people who were not involved in the war. I tell you clearly that there are people who are filling their pockets and they don't know what war's being like. And those of us who are disabled, haven't received any benefits.

One of the longest national anthems in existence (that is, in the style that it’s usually performed, with the musical introduction, the chorus, the first verse, and the chorus again), the Salvadoran anthem is a typical example of a “Latin American epic anthem”. It was commonly adopted as the National Song on September 15, 1879 but did not have official recognition until December 11, 1953.
The anthem was composed by an Italian composer that arrived in the country at the end of the 18th Century as the Director of an opera company and written by General Juan José Cañas, a poet and distinguished military officer, around the year 1856. It was composed at the recommendation of the president Dr. Rafael Zaldívar and was sung for the first time on September 15, 1879 at the National Palace by children and young students from government and private schools of the capital city, and the anthem was very well recieved after the initial performance.

El Himno Nacional de El Salvador fue compuesto por el general salvadoreño Juan José Cañas y el músico italiano Juan Aberle, el cual fue estrenado formalmente el 15 de septiembre de 1879, para ser adoptado legalmente por la Asamblea Legislativa como himno nacional de la República de El Salvador el 13 de noviembre de 1953.
El Himno Nacional de El Salvador está compuesto por un coro y tres estrofas, aunque desde hace muchos años ya no se cantan las dos últimas de ellas. Sin embargo, esta costumbre sólo obtendría reconocimiento oficial mediante Decreto Legislativo No. 342, del 7 de octubre de 1992, publicado en el Diario Oficial No. 223, Tomo No. 317, del 3 de diciembre de 1992, por medio del cual la Asamblea Legislativa decidió reformar el Artículo 15 de la Ley de Símbolos Patrios, en donde ahora se establece que la ejecución del himno nacional debe iniciar con el coro y finalizar con la primera estrofa. No obstante ello, se ha vuelto muy común sólo cantar el coro nada más, que se repite, ya que es la parte musical más fuerte del himno nacional.

El Salvador Massacre During Oscar Romero's Funeral Caught on Film

Those are US trained Salvadoran government troops firing on that crowd. They had the full support of the US government. It most certainly was not the supporters of Oscar Romero or any rebels who did that.
Romero was buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador (Catedral Metropolitana de San Salvador). The funeral mass (rite of visitation and requiem) on 30 March 1980, in San Salvador was attended by more than 250,000 mourners from all over the world. Viewing this attendance as a protest, Jesuit priest John Dear has said, Romero’s funeral was the largest demonstration in Salvadoran history, some say in the history of Latin America.
During the ceremony, smoke bombs exploded on the streets near the cathedral and subsequently there were rifle-fire shots that came from surrounding buildings, including the National Palace. Many people were killed by gunfire and in the stampede of people running away from the explosions and gunfire; official sources talk of 31 overall casualties, while journalists indicated between 30 and 50 died. Some witnesses claimed it was government security forces that threw bombs into the crowd, and army sharpshooters, dressed as civilians, that fired into the chaos from the balcony or roof of the National Palace. However, there are contradictory accounts as to the course of the events and probably, one will never know the truth about the interrupted funeral.
