A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.
An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on
Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official
national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal
National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

Travel Ukraine - Tour of Khotyn Fortress
Take a tour of Khotyn Fortress in Ukraine -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Amidst the enlivening landscape of Ukraine, stands a glorious castle.
Resting on the banks of Dniester River and the gorgeous green fields of Khotyn is the enigmatic Khotyn Fortress.
Built on the site of a previous fort, the structure that stands here today was largely built in the early 14th century.
However many additions and renovations were carried out here in the late 14th and 15th centuries.
From its beginnings as a medieval fort to the present day fortress, its ownership fell into the hands of several different empires and various countries.
Mentioned in the list of Seven Wonders of Ukraine, this gorgeous fortress is a true marvel.
Khotyn Fortress Ukraine Vacations
If the fortress at Kamianets-Podilskyi is like a flower, then the fortress at Khotyn is like a hammer! This is a castle that means business!
The fortress dominates the Dniester River, which runs along one side, however it is almost invisible from the land. Massive earthen mounds rise from the moat valley that wraps the inland-facing side of the castle. The ground rises to form an outer defensive wall.

The Khotyn Fortress (Ukrainian: Хотинська фортеця, Polish: twierdza w Chocimiu, Turkish: Hotin Kalesi, Romanian: Cetatea Hotinului) is a fortification complex located on the right bank of the Dniester River in Khotyn, Chernivtsi Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is situated on a territory of the historical northern Bessarabia region which was split in 1940 between Ukraine and Moldova. The fortress is also located in a close proximity to another famous defensive structure, the Old Kam'yanets Castle of Kamianets-Podilskyi. Construction on the current Khotyn fortress was started in 1325, while major improvements were made in the 1380s and in the 1460s.

Bila Tserkva - 2018
The town was founded in 1032 as Yuriev by Yaroslav the Wise, whose Christian name was Yuri. The present name of the city, literally translated, is White Church and may refer to the

Туристична Україна / Travel to Ukraine

Ukraine: Olesko Castle
The Olesko Castle (Ukrainian: Олеський замок) is currently located within the borders of the present-day Busk Raion in Ukraine. The first historical records of the castle are in a document dated 1390, when Pope Boniface IX gave Halych, a Catholic bishop, this castle as a gift. It is located about seventy-five kilometers from Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine.
The Olesko Castle, oval in shape, stands on top of a small hill, about fifty meters in height. A moat and a wall surrounds it, which serves as a defence for the castle. The castle is also surrounded by a dense swamp. The land that the castle sat on changed ownership many times. It was originally on the border of land of Volhynia and land of Lviv.
The castle was, at different times, owned by Poland, Lithuania, and Hungary. It became a political landmark in the 14th century when movable borders between the three aforementioned countries ran through its territory. Battles for ownership of the castle were constant. A deep well in the basement of the castle was used as an escape route for besieged prisoners.
In the 15th century, the castle was changed from being a defense point, to simply a getaway for aristocracy.
The castle is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, the hero of the Battle of Vienna. He often lived there, and collected many of the artworks currently displayed in the present-day museum. Another Polish king, King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, was also born here.
The castle was restored in the late 16th to the early 17th Centuries. Paintings and mosaics were brought in to decorate the different rooms of the castle. The castle was remodeled in the Italian Renaissance style, which was popular at that time.
In 1838, an earthquake rocked the castle, partly destroying some areas. In 1882, the castle, regarded as a Polish national monument was bought by the Committee of Preservation of the Olesko Castle, which led to a restoration in 1892. Both World War I and World War II affected the castle negatively, undoing previous restoration work. In 1956, the castle was struck by lightning.
The castle was restored again, beginning in 1961 and lasting until 1985. Today, it is a museum, displaying the collections of antique furnishings and art dating from the 16th-17th Centuries. It also features sculptures, paintings, still lives, applied arts, tapestries, period weapons, and objects used in everyday life at the time. Its collection is regarded as one of the richest treasury of Polish art outside borders of Poland.
The castle is a part of the Golden Horseshoe, a ring of three castles nearby each other: the Olesko, the Pidhirtsi, and the Zolochiv Castles.

Ukraine Travel - Sofievka (Sofiyivka) Park, Uman
The Stunning Landscaped Gardens at Sofiyivka Park are spread over 154.7 hectares near the city of Uman in Cherkassy province. Commissioned by Earl Pototskiy in 1796 to honour his beautiful wife, the gardens cost a staggering 15 million zloty to create and house a rare collection of trees and plants assembled from across Europe.
When when the Seven Wonders of Ukraine were selected in 1997 Sofiyivsky Park was awarded joint first place. The character of the gardens, waterfalls and lakes might change with the seasons, however their beauty remains an unquestionable constant.
