Banyuwangi Indonesia | Secret Gem in The East Most of Java
Banyuwangi Indonesia | Secret Gem in The East Most of Java
Banyuwangi literally means Aromatic Water, which is associated with the local legend. Being the east-most city on Java, this is where the dawn first rises in the morning throwing its welcoming rays over Java, this lush green but also most densely populated island. Banyuwangi Regency extends over an area of 5,800 square km, comprising southern beaches brushed by the Indian Ocean, to impressive Mt Raung that stands at 3,282 meters and Mt Merapi at 2,800 meters above sea level.
The town of Banyuwangi is the gateway to your explorations to watch wild animals roam freely in the reserve of Alas Purwo, the oldest game reserve on Java, go trekking through the savannah of Baluran, or find secluded and untouched beaches at Pulau Merah or G-Land, and travel to Sukamade Beach where turtles come to hatch their eggs. Mountain climbers can hike up from Banyuwangi to the stunning Ijen Crater and be amazed by blue flames that spring out among the yellow sulphurous rocks, cut and gathered manually by traditional miners.
Get There
To visit the many attractions around Banyuwangi it is best to rent a car at the airport or through your hotel or travel agent. Best make sure to have a sturdy and comfortable vehicle especially when you plan to visit mountain regions or savannah, although generally speaking, roads around here are good.
If you wish to travel overland from Bali, catch the ferry at Gilimanuk port, on the western tip of Bali which sails to the port of Ketapang at Banyuwangi. You can of course, also travel by car from Surabaya or any other large city in East Java to Banyuwangi.
Indonesia’s second largest city, Surabaya is connected directly from abroad by a number of international airlines. You can then connect on Garuda Indonesia or Lion Air flights from Surabaya to Banyuwangi’s Blimbingsari Airport. There are also daily flights from Bali to Banyuwangi.
The city of Banyuwangi is located around 239 km east of Surabaya, capital of the province of East Java. You can travel to Banyuwangi by car or by train.

Discover Banyuwangi 1
Welcome to Banyuwangi. The beauty of nature is spread across Banyuwangi from the west to the east. Mountains, forests and beaches mark the landscape of the regency. For instance, Ijen Crater, in the western part of Banyuwangi is famous for its beautiful crater lake, the traditional sulfur miners who amazingly climb up and down the slope of Mount Merapi, and the plantations that cover the Crater’s slope. The National Park of Meru Betiri is famous for its Java Tigers and turtles. These locations form the center of the Tourism Developed area which is called the Diamond Triangle, which connects one Tourism Object to another.

very sad in the activity of hunting wild birds in the tragedy when I found 5 dead birds hanging after being shot, this type of kingfisher coincidentally in my photo hunting session this time was the main object, and I was immediately shocked to see the heartbreaking beautiful object of pride I died tragically by an evil hand.
Magical East Java
Checkout my Instagram to see the photographs from my East Java roadtrip: and please help to share if you find this video enjoyable, that would mean a lot ;)
10 days motorcycle road trip through 1600kms of the magical East Java. What an amazing place! Beautiful beaches, off beaten path waterfalls, rich in biodiversity and the mountain regions are just “literally” on fire! I rode 1600km, taking countless pictures and footages along the way.
Some of the highlights from this trip were to be able to see hundreds of deer passing through a savannah in Baluran. Lucky enough to be able to witness a 1-meter long green turtle laying 120 eggs in Sukamade. Then there’s the blue fire in Ijen. And of course, catching the sunrise in Bromo never gets old.
Also worth mentioning, I met the beach cat which I thought really hilarious as she kept walking along as I walked from the village to the beach in Sukamade. It was a one km walk.
One of the most memorable things is when on my way to Sukamade (Meru Betiri National Park) I fell from the bike, not once, but twice. Damn my bike is just too heavy and it’s so not off-road friendly which where I took it :p
In most part of the trip, I went solo road trip aside from the first and the last days. Thanks to Puji and Arnanda for helping me capture some of these footages.
I hope I can go on and create videos like this for each region in Java!
So the route:
Pacitan (Beautiful beaches) - 0:16
Lumajang (Amazing waterfalls) - 0:45
Sukamade (See the turtles) - 1:36
Ijen (Blue fire and acid lake) - 2:18
Baluran (Wildlife in savanna) - 3:10
Bromo (Most beautiful volcanic scenery I've ever seen) - 3:35 til 4:13
The gears:
- Mavic Pro
- Lumix LX-100
- Lumix GX-8
- Olympus 17mm 1.8
- Lumix G Vario 45 - 200
- Go Pro H5
- Feiyu WG 2
- Zhiyun Crane Plus.
Thanks and help sharing if you like this video ;)

Geographically located on 8°21’-8°34’ South Latitude, 113°37’-113°58’ East Longitude, the fertile area has already being protected, since the Dutch Government period of 1931, as a conservation area due to its abundant richness. East Java - Where Avatar meets Lord of The Rings
This is East Java, Indonesia! It is the island practically touching Bali, a nature lovers paradise, and where Avatar meets Lord of the Rings.
Follow the adventures daily on Instagram @MichaelMakesFilms
East Java is an incredible mix of some of the worlds best waterfalls and volcanic landscape even rivalling New Zealand. It’s basically the more affordable version of New Zealand but equally as impressive.
You can get here by car from Jakarta, air to Surabaya airport, or by sea from Bali on a 25 minute ferry.
If flying from Surabaya I recommend starting near Tumpak Sewu. There is a great homestay near the parking lot. You can use this as a base for a day, two or 3 to make the most of the waterfalls and all the hiking. The must see waterfalls there are Tumpak Sewu, Goa Tetes, Coban Sriti, Kapas Biru and Kabut Pelangi.
If you have even more time and enjoy trekking, check out Semeru volcano for a 2 to 3 day climb. You can also stop in Malang before getting here to see the colourful Jodipan Village.
From there I recommend Driving up to Probolinggo where you can either use as a rest day, or head back to Mt Bromo. Mt. Bromo can be done in 1-2 days. You can either just do the sunrise viewpoint and move on or ride some dirt bikes around the volcano (an amazing day trip!)
There are 3 sunrise viewpoints that I looked into (Seruni Point, King Kong hill, and Puncak B29)
After Bromo we went directly to the town of Banyuwangi. We used it as a base for several days to explore Ijen volcano, the cypress tree forest near Genteng town and Baluran National Park for its unique savanna and wildlife.
The highlight of my trip was Ijen Volcano, not only for the natural beauty, but meeting the sulphur miners. Their story is incredible.Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!A special thank you to @Vander_Armando for providing the Mt Bromo drone shot! :)Check him out on IG, he’s an amazing photographer!
