BRIEFING ON THE KANCHANABURI HISTORICAL PLACES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEATH RAILWAY: After entering the Second World War in Dec. 1941, Japanese forces quickly overran most of South East Asia. In 1942, in order to find a shorter and more secure line of supply between Burma (Myanmar) and Siam (Thailand), the Japanese decided to user prisoners of war and civilian labour to build a single line railway to link existing railheads at Thanbyuzayat in the west and Ban Pong in the east. Two forces, one based in Siam and one in Burma, worked from opposite ends of the line, meeting at Konkuita in October 1943. The project cost the lives of approx. 15,000 prisoners of war and 100,000 civilians as a result of sickness, malnutrition, exhaustion and mistreatment.
All the heavy work was done manually either by hand or by elephant. The men worked from dawn until after dark and often had to walk many kilometres through the jungle to return to base camp for getting treatment by Allied doctors. They were subject to extreme violence, torture, physical punishment, humiliation and neglect.
KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY contains the remains of 6,982 Australian, Dutch and British war prisoners who lost their lives during the construction of the Death Railway. Another war cemetery about 2 km south of town on the Kwai River that contains 1,740 remains (1,379 British, 313 Netherlands, 42 Malayan & 6 India). It was the site of a base camp, a hospital and a church built by the prisoners themselves.
JEATH WAR MUSEUM inside Wat Chai Chumpion has been constructed in the form of an Allied Prisoner of War camp. The bamboo huts contains photographic, pictorial and few memorabilia dating the World War II. JEATH stands for Japan, England, Austrialia, Thailand and Holland the primary nations which participated in local action.
THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI became internationally famous when it was featured in movies and books. The Bridge River Kwai is a tourist destination. The track is developed into a walkway with side platforms which are useful as viewpoints for the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Every year, River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing on November 28, 1944. Spectacular light and sound show is the highlight of the festival.

Explore the Forest with Our Land Resort Kanchanaburi, Thailand | Baiju N Nair | Travel Tips
OurLand is a story about giving back to Mother Nature.
The idea first came to a few friends, and was simple: take commercial land and return it to nature by letting wild flora and fauna thrive there. OurLand is a nature conservatory focused on designing, developing, and sustaining a nature-friendly, yet technologically-advanced, life style.
The OurLand Nature reserve, is the last wildlife corridor through which wild animals can pass between the lower half of Salakphra Wildlife Sanctuary (also Thailands oldest Wildlife sanctuary) and the water's edge by the Kwae Yai river.
In the heart of this conservatory is OurLand Sustainable Village, a unique way of experiencing life in the lap of nature. People from all over the world visit OurLand Reserve and Sustainable Village to soak in nature and the way of life here.
Situated in the middle of The Reserve, access to the Village is only allowed through the River Kwai Yai. Land access by vehicles is prohibited to preserve nature and to decrease damage by motorized transport.
Living in the wild means the OurLand teams are experts at wild life tracking, organic farming, wood construction, spear fishing, honey hunting, and much more. Visitors get a taste of all these when they spend time with us.
OurLand also works with the local communities to enhance understanding and acceptance towards conservation. This includes:
- Collaborating with local communities to address Human Elephant Conflict (HEC)
- Working with local orphanages to inspire children to take active leadership in nature conservation
- Serving as a meditation centre that allows groups who prefer the safe haven of a jungle over the hustle and bustle of the city
In a nutshell, at OurLand we are creating a new way of life, where nature is respected and conservation is seen as the crucial link between progress and tranquility . All this is viewed through a scientific lens to better understand how we can continue to co-exist with nature with the least possible damage.

Adventurous Day at a WILDLIFE SANCTUARY near Phuket | Ahsan's Window
An adventurous day at Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary, Phang Nga district, southern Thailand.
The full day activities include White Water Rafting, Elephant Trekking, Elephant Show, Zip-lining (also known as Flying Fox or Aerial Runway or Foefie Slide).
We were picked up by a mini-bus from our hotel Seaview, Patong Beach at 8 am and after picking few more tourists on the way we reached, after about 2 hours, a camp located at Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary. We were provided with lockers for keeping our belongings safely followed by the life jackets and were briefed about the upcoming rafting as to how to sit where to hold how to dodge tree trunks that we may come across, etc . Since we are a family of 6 we had to split into two as each raft can accommodate 4 persons. It was raining and we were already drenched before rafting. Anyhow you get drenched in rafting as water splashes all over the raft but it will be ultimate fun. We covered a distance of about 5 kms in 30 minutes rafting through raging waters in a roaring river. At the end of rafting we were brought back to the camp from where we departed in rafts. We had the delicious lunch served at the camp.
Then we headed to a nearby forest area that had 4 activities Elephant Show, Elephant Trekking, ATV and Zip lining. These activities are available in close vicinity of the camp.
The zipline here is just normal unlike in other parts of the world where it is at a high place or too steep. The one here is just little above the ground level and has three stations forming a triangle.
Then we took three elephants two of us mounted on each with a mahout of course. The ride thru jungles in the rains with elephants stopping and grazing walking thru uphill/downhill, water loggings, and rough muddy paths was quite adventurous.
The baby elephant circus was interesting too especially when the baby elephant kisses with it’s trunk on the hand when I heard the smack sound of its kiss. This was so interesting and funny.
Another great memorable day full of adventures!!!

Kanchanaburi (Thai: กาญจนบุรี) is a town (thesaban mueang) in the west of Thailand and the capital of Kanchanaburi province. In 2006 it had a population of 31,327. The town covers the complete tambon Ban Nuea and Ban Tai and parts of Pak Phraek and Tha Makham, all of Mueang Kanchanaburi district, and parts of the tambon Tha Lo of Tha Muang district.
Kanchanaburi spans the northern banks of the river and is a popular spot for travelers, its location at the edge of a mountain range keeping it much cooler than the other provinces of central Thailand. The city has two major commercial districts: the downtown area consists of a grid of several streets with office buildings, shop fronts, and a shopping mall; and the riverfront area businesses are mostly located further west along River Kwai Road. Once a year a carnival comes to town and is set up in the area next to the bridge. At night there is a small pyrotechnics display that reenacts the Allied bombing of the bridge.

Wildlife Rescue Centre Thailand with Thorsten - The Global Work & Travel Co. Reviews
Global Traveller Thorsten is living the dream! After two seasons of a Working Holiday in Canada through The Global Work & Travel Co., Thorsten went to volunteer in Thailand on our Wildlife Rescue Centre program.
Have a look at some of the animals and sceneries that Thorsten got to see while making a difference through volunteering. The wildlife centre always aims to rehabilitate and reintroduce (where possible) animals back into the wild. Housed in the centre are a variety of different animal species, that may include gibbons, macaques, civets, loris, small and big cats, bears, crocodiles and exotic birds. Enclosures that replicate nature as closely as possible provide an environment ideal for reintroduction back into the wild. Volunteers work alongside other international volunteers and staff across a variety of tasks all geared towards offering the highest level of care for the wildlife.
