Nedumkayam is a tourist destination located 18 kilometres apart from the land of teak plantations, Nilambur.
The place is famous for its natural beauty decorated by rainy forest, which provides an ecosystem for wild animals such as elephant, deer, rabbit, and buffalo. ‘Cholanaikar’, a rare ethnic community of southern parts of India, are inhabitants of this forests.
The British used this place for wild hunting during their ruling. A rest house built by them still stands as a memoir. In addition to that there are several attractive monuments of forest department. One among them is iron bridges built during 1930s. British engineer named E K Dawson was the chief architect. He drowned in river Karimpuzha. His cemetery is present nearby one of the bridge. Dawson also constructed a wooden bungalow facing river Karimpuzha.
Until the wild life protection act came in to force, Nedumkayam was a major destination for wildlife hunters especially elephant catchers. They made pits and traps to capture and habitats to conserve elephants. The old large building now functioning as Karulayi range office once used as a warehouse to gather hunting equipment.
There is a belief that the water of Karimpuzha river has healing power. So tourists coming here never return without taking a dip. But it’s a statutory warning that swimming in this river is dangerous. Those who wants to swim, better get advice from natives.

ചോലനായ്ക്കർ Cholanaikar
The Cholanaikkan traditionally reside in the Karulai and Chunkathara forest ranges near Nilambur, which fall in Nilambur Taluk of Malappuram district. Until the 1960s, they were leading a secluded life with very limited contact with mainstream urban society. Since then, the Cholanaikkans' traditional lifestyle has been altered. They currently have a 16% literacy rate.
The Cholanaikkan call themselves as ‘Malanaikan’ or ‘Sholanaikan’. They are called Cholanaikan because they inhabit the interior forests. ‘Chola’ or ‘shoals’ means deep ever green forest, and ‘naikan’ means King. They are said to have migrated from Mysore forests.
The Cholanaikkan numbered 360 individuals in the 1991 census. Their population has since fallen considerably, with only 124 members today.

Kerala’s Nedumkayam becomes first 'digital' tribal colony - The News
While several cities across India continue to struggle with demonetisation drive, Kerala’s Nedumkayam tribal colony at Nilambur in Malappuram becomes a role model to the country by becoming the first 'digital' tribal colony in India.
Collector Amit Meena said, “Usually such a change is more visible in big cities. It's surprising that a tribal community is turning to digital. This is a change that everyone needs to look into and learn from.”
