Nemmara, a small village in the Palakkad District of Kerala state, southern India is known far and wide for its 'Vela' festival known as Nemmara-Vallangi Vela.It is the biggest of all vela held in Kerala.
The Vela is a festival celebrated in the villages of the Palakkad and Thrissur (especially in Talappilly Taluk) districts in summer, after the harvest. The prominent crop in this area is rice. After the harvest, the fields are empty and dry, and this is the time for the Vela. The Vela is celebrated on a grand scale, equaling the famous 'Trissur Pooram'. The festival is believed to be the birthday of the presiding deity of the village temple or the memory of a major event like the killing of a demon by the goddess.The most highlight of vela is fireworks.

A festival celebrated annually in the Nellikulangara Bhagavathy Temple in Palakkad, Nenmara Vallangi Vela is among the most beautiful celebrations held on these shores. The vivid colours, lights, fireworks and art forms on display make for an entertaining and unforgettable experience.
The Vela festival of Nenmara and Vallangi villages of Chittur taluk, situated on the lap of the hills surrounding the Nelliyampathy forest, is famous for its grandeur and rituals. The friendly competition between the villages to outdo each other spices up the entire festival and many a unique sight are on display during this time. The Vela is celebrated after the paddy harvest. The festival is believed to be the birthday of the presiding deity of Nellikulangara Bhagavathy and falls on the 20th day of the Malayalam month of Meenam. The two competing villages, the Nenmara and the Vallangi, have their own temples but converge at the common Nellikulangara Bhagavathy Temple for the Vela.
One gets to witness some wonderful art forms like Kummatti, Karivela and Andivela during this time period. The 20th day sees magnificent processions with caparisoned elephants being taken out from the two villages to the Nellikulangara Temple. Once they reach the temple, the two sides perform the panchavadyam (traditional Kerala orchestra). Villagers from both sides stand facing each other beneath the utsavapandal (festival stage) and enthusiastically perform several traditional percussion ensembles in a bid to outshine each other. People are also enamoured by the beautifully decorated aanapandal which are used to house the elephants.

The Nenmara Vallangi Vela is the occasion to celebrate the annual joint invocation of the Nellikkulangara Bhagavathy by the people of Nenmara and Vallangi villages. The middle of the month of April is the time when Nenmara in Palakkad district gets set for the Nenmara Vallangi Vela. The usual date falls on 13th day of the month of April for the occasion. The spectacle brings in the perfect time to visit the serene environs of the state with a great climate and an occasion to remember the visit.
Description of the Nenmara Vallangi Vela in Kerala
The occasion commences with flag hoisting ceremony to mark the beginning of the festival which is followed by the colorful ceremonies and precessions. The grandeur of the event is considered only next to Thrissur Pooram. The celebration is a joint incantation of the Nellikkulangara Bhagavathy by the locals of Nenmara and Vallangi villages. The Kodiyettam or the flag hoisting is conducted on 13th of April with various folk entertainment and cultural programs to follow. The Nenmara Vallangi Vela festival is the forum to enjoy the numerous folk arts like Kummatti, Karivela, Andivela and many to mark the following days.
The concluding day celebration is marked by the splendor of a ceremony with an array of 30 tuskers paraded on the streets laden with heavy decorations and a decorated canopy as well. The colorful ceremony is witnessed by thousands from all over Kerala and other states as well. The conglomeration of two villages to celebrate the occasion too is something striking.
The best way to reach the spot of festival is to take the rail route to reach out to the Palakkad station which lies around 40 kilometers from the site.
