Ethnic Textile Traditional Dhaka Weaving by Limbu Women
Limbu women from the eastern part of Nepal used to be great fabric-artist entrepreneurs and very hard working a couple of centuries ago. There were no imported threads available for weaving then, therefore they used to grow cotton themselves in their fields. They used to spin thread for weaving after harvesting raw cotton and drying it in the sun. The women used to weave handloom cloth called Dhaka. Traditional Nepalese Dhaka weaving is characterized by colorful geometric designs. The loom is made of wood and bamboo. This type of traditional weaving has been bequeathed to their female descendents. This traditional material is also used in interior decoration for modern contemporary houses; you can find it used for cushion covers, curtains, table runners, table mats, wall hangings, etc. This material is also used in boutiques to make unusual and unique designer outfits. Definitely the credit goes to our mothers and grandmothers for passing such skills down through the generations. The skill of weaving Dhaka material is endangered because of mass production of imported material from China and India.
I visited Nepal in March, 2007 and met with Kalpana YongHang. I asked her how this traditional weaving is done. Kalpana weaves at her home in Gokarna outside of Kathmandu. She wants to continue this work to preserve this traditional weaving art of Limbus. She started weaving 5 years ago with just one loom, now there are about 12 women who weave with her. She is looking for a designing partner to produce items which meet international standards to sell in the global market.

Your suggestions are welcomed to help preserve this Traditional Dhaka Weaving of Limbus in Nepal.

Making handwoven DHAKA fabric in Nepal • ढाका
These two beautiful women make Nepal's traditional Dhaka fabric in a workshop behind their house. The daughter is studying to be a teacher but still weaves in her spare time after class. The father originally bought the family's looms in India and then made the punch hole cards to generate the traditional patterns found in Dhaka cloth.
In many parts of central Nepal, women weave Dhaka fabric in their spare time. Traditionally it originates with the Limbu people of eastern Nepal, who don't used a punch-card loom, seen here. Now-a-days Dhaka fabric is used mainly for sewing topi, the traditional Nepali men's hat. It used to be more commonly used also for making men's vests and women's blouses (a dhaka-ko-cholo).

NEPAL, KATHMANDU: HOW TO MAKE PASHMINA SCARVES
by Marco Petruzzelli
tvreporter.it
Pashmina refers to a type of fine cashmere wool and the textiles made from it. The name comes from Pashmineh, made from Persian pashm (wool). The wool comes from changthangi or pashmina goat, which is a special breed of goat indigenous to high altitudes of the Himalayas in Nepal, Pakistan and northern India. Pashmina shawls are hand spun, woven and embroidered in Kashmir, and made from fine cashmere fibre.
The fibre is also known as pashm or pashmina for its use in the handmade shawls of Himalayas. The woollen shawls made from wool in Kashmir find written mention in Afghan texts between 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD. However, the founder of the cashmere wool industry is traditionally held to be the 15th century ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin, who introduced weavers from Central Asia.
Cashmere shawls have been manufactured in Nepal and Kashmir for thousands of years. The test for a quality pashmina is warmth and feel. Pashmina and Cashmere are derived from mountain goats. One distinct difference between Pashmina and Cashmere is the fiber diameter. Pashmina fibers are finer and thinner than cashmere fiber, therefore, it is ideal for making light weight apparel like fine scarves. However, these days the word PASHMINA has been used too liberally and any scarves made from natural or synthetic fiber are sold as Pashmina creating confusion in the market.
Pashmina from Nepal are the best in quality because of the conditions to which the mountain goats have adapted over centuries. The high Himalayas of Nepal has harsh, cold climate and in order to survive that the mountain goats have developed exceptionally warm and light fiber which might be slightly coarser than cashmere fibers obtained from lower region goats, but it is much warmer.
To distinguish Nepalese Pashmina, the Nepal Pashmina Industries Association has registered a Trademark around the world, called Changra Pashmina.
