Netarts Bay
A wonderful to crab and dig clams
Netarts Bay Clams
Following up on rumors of razor clams being dug between Netarts and Oceanside we made the effort but no cigar. Plan B was successful and we all went home with limits of bay clams. I took home 20 nice Manila clams. Steamed clams tomorrow night.
Clamming at Netarts Bay
The clam diggers at Netarts Bay on the Oregon coast. The extra low tide makes for good clamming of the blue gaper clam. Then, cleaning the clams is the messy part.

This video is really noisy, because of the wind. You might want to turn the volume down.
Clamming Netarts Bay, Oregon
Raking for cockle clams in Netarts bay. This video was taken on the 2nd of June 2012. I made a trip with 6 other people to Netarts Bay, and we did decent. Four of us knew what we were doing, and the other three were first-timers. We came home with 95 clams. I also used a crab snare and caught one female dungeness.
Cockle clams are best used in chowder and pasta dishes because they have a strong (but very good) clam flavor. They aren't mild like steamers. We greatly prefer Cockles over Gapers because cockles are far easier to clean, and they are also easier to dig. Cockles are also very hard to break, and the small ones can be returned. You must keep all the Gapers you dig, and it is very easy to crush them or cut off their necks.
If you live in the area, you can purchase the rake I'm using at bi-Mart. It's the best clamming rake I've used, though it's not sold for the purpose of clamming.
Shellfish licenses cost $7 for a year. There are great access points with information centers at Netarts, and there are usually Fish and Wildlife staff or State Police there that will help newcomers. Each digger must have their own bucket and rake, and they must dig only their own clams (no sharing). The cops really come down hard on anyone that breaks the rules, and they watch with binoculars.

Netarts Dive Jul 12 2019 A
Another great dive at Netarts. I never tire of the amount of sea life in this close to home easy dive. Today lots of fish but few Dungeness crabs. Be careful of the outboards though; you can hear them overhead in the video.

Crabbing on the Oregon Coast Bay
My buddy and I went crabbing, caught about 5 Dungeness crabs. We met a girl with her grandmother that was crabbing too and we helped them out a little bit.
Afterwards we bought some Oysters that were locally farmed and were fresh right off the Bay. Cooked a Crab and a dozen Oysters... Couldn't get any fresher than that and delicious!
