Things to do in Cannon Beach and Seaside Oregon: Tillamook Head Hiking Guide
Things to do in Cannon Beach and Seaside Oregon: The Tillamook Head Trail.
The Tillamook Head Trail is one of the most spectacular hikes on the Oregon Coast. Starting at Indian Beach in Ecola State Park, the strenuous 1.5 mile trail winds upwards through old growth forest and is broken up with stunning views of the ocean. Terrible Tilly, the infamous Tillamook Head lighthouse is visible perched atop an ocean rock several miles out for much of the hike.
At the top of the trail you'll find an ideal Hikers Camp, complete with three wooden Adirondacks, a covered picnic area, a fire pit, plenty of tent sites and wood for sale. There are also restrooms.
Take the short trail down from Hikers Camp to the ocean overlook. Here you'll find World War II era military bunkers and a spectacular point to see the sun set behind the Tillamook Lighthouse.
For those looking for a longer hike, continue along the trail for 4 miles to the Seaside trailhead. The trail passes through more old growth forest and is seldom traveled by other hikers.
Early mornings and evenings are the best time to do the hike. Winter is also a wonderful time to hike the trail and not see others.
You are not allowed to park overnight at either trailhead so make sure you have someone drop you off or park in Cannon Beach if you intend to stay the night.

Driving the Oregon Coast from Astoria to Tillamook, June 10, 2012
The day was mostly sunny, the traffic light and the beaches uncrowded when I drove US-101 from Astoria to Tillamook on the northern coast of Oregon. It was early June, so peak season hadn't yet arrived. As a visiting New Englander, I feel lucky having visited such a beautiful part of the Pacific coast on a sunny day and before the summer invasion.
Grant's Getaways: Tamolitch, The Blue Pool
The trails less traveled are the ones I cherish most and Oregon has a bounty of places to choose that are prime as winter shakes off its gray-shaded coat and reveals an early springtime warm up. We’re heading up the McKenzie River Valley into the rugged mountains where a gentle trail lead us to one of the state’s most remarkable sites called Tamolitch or the “Blue Pool.”
