Normal freight traffic resumes at Kilmarnock 18-08-15
Thanks to Graeme, I was able to get down to Kilmarnock station and catch the first freight traffic to run to and from Carlisle since the NR train derailment near New Cumnock 3 weeks ago.
First we see an NMT working with 43013 tnt 43062 on 1Q26, Ayr to Carlisle and return
Next up comes 66193 working 6S13 Belmont Yard (Doncaster) to New Cumnock coal loading point, formed of 36 MEA wagons which are the closest we have nowadays to the old style 16 ton mineral wagons of old. I love the clanking bink bonk noises and the clattering over the points they make.
Finally we see an immaculate 57302 Chad Varah working 0Z31 route trainer from Carlisle to Polmadie where it is currently the duty Thunderbird.
Riding the Class 20 Snowplough Move by Train Crazy - railway video
Riding the Class 20 Snowplough Move - Available on DVD & Blu-ray from
Early in 2012 a number of refurbished snowploughs had to be moved from Kilmarnock to various locations around the UK. Known as 'Beilhacks', TOPS code ZZA, these former Class 40 bogies are normally attached to the front and rear of a pair of diesel locomotives when in plough mode.
DRS had the job of moving the ploughs to their new homes and three trains ran in January and February. The first of them, on 12th January featured the unlikely combination of a Class 20 and a Class 57 pairing!
On what was a fine sunny winter day -- with not a flake of snow to be seen -- we joined the train at Kilmarnock, filming from the cab of 20303 for the entire journey. Departing Kilmarnock we travelled via the GSW route passing New Cumnock, Dumfries and Gretna and the various junctions, signal boxes and semaphore signals. Upon joining the West Coast Main Line the train was routed via the freight-only Up Arrival Flyover road, Up reception sidings and into Kingmoor depot at the north end.

Half an Hour at (56) - abandoned Talacre Station 21.8.2014 - Prestatyn Class 158 175 221
Following on the good feedback received about two recent videos filmed at disused stations at Bagillt and Holywell, I made the short trip to the old Talacre station just outside Prestatyn. Unfortunately the rain started but you can still see how well preserved this station is.
During the visit a Network Rail - Rail Grinder was passing from Bangor to Maindee sidings, Newport. Plus there was a Virgin Voyager and a couple of Arriva DMU's.
It opened in 1903 and closed in 1966, and is situated some way out of the village of Talacre. Despite being closed for nearly 50 years, the platforms are virtually intact. All station buildings are long gone, as is the access steps to the platforms but the adjacent road bridge gives a good vantage point over the area.
On the other side of the bridge is Talacre signal box, and beyond the next bridge the overgrown sidings that belonged to the former Point of Ayr Colliery. The Chester bound slow line is still partly in situ now as a partially overgrown siding.
