Studies have shown that animal welfare is inevitably compromised due to the traveling and temporary nature of the circus, with severe confinement inevitable and physical abuse commonplace.
Constant travel presents many challenges to the physical, psychological and behavioral welfare of the animals: frequent transportation; extended periods of time shut in vehicles, beyond the length of the journey itself; the necessity for accommodations to be small, lightweight and portable all leads to high levels of suffering.
Public safety is also an important issue. Moving potentially dangerous animals across open ground and in close proximity to the public has resulted in escapes and injuries. We have seen that the need to control these animals in public also raises the level of animal abuse when workers moving the animals under time pressures, use weapons and beatings to keep control.
ADI investigations, and those of others, have exposed the culture of animal handling and training in the circus industry to be abusive. Many hours of video evidence have shown that pain, punishment and fear are the methods used to force animals to perform tricks.
Trainers and workers have been filmed routinely using whips, goads, metal bars, pitchforks, shovels, the ankus/bullhook (a bar with a metal hook on the end), as well as electric prods and even stun guns on the animals.
No one is saying end circuses; circus businesses must adapt to changes in audience tastes, like all businesses, and the popularity of human-only circus shows points the way. Cirque du Soleil, for example appears eight times in the top ranking international shows alongside Madonna and Lady Gaga world tours (Top 50 Highest Earning World Tours in 2012), with combined ticket sales of nearly $400 million. Not a single animal circus made the list.

Animals in the circus have not been asked to be there. They are stolen from the wild, babies ripped from their mothers and beaten into submission to perform. Elephants live a majority of their lives in chains. Tigers are crammed in into tiny cages for months on end. This atrocity must end now and we are putting a stop to it. But we can't succeed without you!
Contact Congress this week!
Ask your Representative in Congress to support and co-sponsor the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (H.R. 3359), a landmark federal bill that aims to protect elephants, tigers, bears and other wild animals from being forced to perform in traveling circuses.
What you can do:
It is easy to send an email and make a quick call to your member of congress today! Animal Defenders International is leading a big grassroots push to flood Congress with calls and emails. Even if you have already sent a message, please call today!
Investigations have revealed circus animals are trained through domination using weapons including bullhooks, whips and electric shocking devices.
H.R. 3359 is an important animal protection measure that will relieve an enormous amount of suffering, will save resources and protect people.
Background about H.R. 3359
The Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act, H.R. 3359, will restrict the use of exotic and non-domesticated animals from traveling circuses in the United States.
[OASIS Ep. 3] R/V Atlantis Tour in Newport Oregon
Haley and Trish flew out to Oregon to load the rest of the OASIS gear onto the R/V Atlantis while she was docked in Newport. While there, we took a tour of the ship and checked out where we will be living for 30 days on our OASIS Expedition. We also said hello to the Alvin submarine, which will be using to collect samples from ~2500 m (~1.5 MILES) deep in the ocean.

Newport Oregon To Trinidad California
It was dawn as I caught the tide and light airs, turning west-northwest off the mark on Point Wilson just out of Port Townsend, Washington State. I held my boat hard on the wind, westing until the wind passed on, just past Protection Island. Drifting on the large artery of the San Juans- the Straits of Juan de Fuca, it was becoming apparent that I was not going to make my planned hook move as I floated past Dungeness Spit. “ Well, jus flippin’ beautiful, maybe I’ll get pushed all the way back to Point Wilson” I thought as I locked the oars in place, paddling to stay off the Nun that marked the shoal just off the spit. An hour or so later the tide slacked, then moved to flood, slowly again the wind picked up and the sun sank over the horizon, giving me an evening tack for Victoria, BC. Hours later, just north of Race Rocks, I tacked south towards the main shipping lanes. I had been at sea for nearly 20 hours. Wind was easing and my wind vane steering was not working, forcing me to hand steer. Fog and fatigue were starting to consume me and soon my visibility would be zero in the “precautionary area”, a dangerous intersection where ships converge, heading out in all directions.
Would I survive the night with the shipping traffic barreling down on me amidst the fog? How could I make the next 200 hundred miles to open sea, hand steering, dead tired, on big tide and variable winds which made it seem like a million? Had I bitten off more than I could chew? The questions I had for myself were daunting, yet when I freed myself from the engine, little did I realize the knowledge that I would gain when I chained myself to the challenge. That was the beginning.
Engineless offshore cruising is rare and to many observers it is either irresponsible or sounds like casting dice at doom. In all honesty there have been times when the sour taste of panic rose up in my throat and I would have loved to “kick the donk” as they say, but my die was cast and I had my lessons to learn, sometimes the hard way.
Everything We Know About Kobe Bryant's Helicopter Crash Death So Far
On the morning of Sunday, January 26, 2020, a helicopter carrying NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, and — according to officials speaking hours after the incident — six other people crashed in Calabasas, California, killing everyone on board. Bryant was 41 years old.
According to TMZ, the helicopter that crashed was a private aircraft owned by Bryant. Though the cause of the crash is unknown at the time of the making of this video, it is currently under investigation. The TMZ report also relays the observations of eyewitnesses to the crash, saying that they heard the helicopter's engine sputtering before it went down.
While the identity of the pilot or of the other occupants of the helicopter besides Kobe, Gianna, and Altobelli have not been revealed yet, Vanessa Bryant — Kobe Bryant's wife of nearly two decades — was not on board when it crashed. An ABC news break shortly after the crash allegedly claimed that Bryant and all four of his children were on board the helicopter when it crashed. However, TMZ's report cited Bryant's reps that apparently only Gianna was on board.
Footage of the wreckage of the the tragic accident, which filled television, computer, and smartphone screens for hours after Bryant's death, reveal that the helicopter had crashed into the Santa Monica Mountains, which run along the Pacific Ocean on California's southern border.
According to the TMZ report, Bryant had routinely used his private helicopter as a means of transportation for many years. In 2010, a GQ profile of Bryant described his practice of taking a private chopper to all of his home games with the Los Angeles Lakers, a method of travel he continued to employ up through his retirement from the team and the NBA in 2016. Throughout the majority of his career with the Lakers, he lived in a house located in Newport Coast, in Newport Beach, California, and traveled via the helicopter to the Lakers' home at the STAPLES Center in LA, a distance of about 48 miles. The TMZ report was updated a few hours after its initial posting to assert that the helicopter was on its way to the Mamba Academy — Kobe Bryant's sports training facility — for basketball practice.
With his wife Vanessa, Kobe Bryant was father to four daughters: Gianna, Natalia, Bianca, and Capri, who was only born on June 20, 2019 — just over seven months before Bryant's untimely death.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, to former professional basketball player Joe Jellybean Bryant, Kobe Bean Bryant enjoyed an illustrious 20 year career in the NBA as a shooting guard, having been drafted right out of high school to play for the Charlotte Hornets before being traded to the LA Lakers in 1996.
Over the course of his two decades as a professional basketball player, he earned five NBA championships between the years of 2000 and 2010, and was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2009. For two consecutive years after that, in 2009 and 2010, he was named the NBA Finals' MVP. Bryant also earned two Olympic Gold Medals as a member of the United States Men's Basketball Teams in the Beijing and London Summer Olympics in 2008 and 2012, respectively. In 2017, the Lakers held a ceremony to retire both of Bryant's jerseys, number 8 and 24.
But Bryant's achievements weren't limited to the court — he was awarded an Oscar in 2018 for his animated short film Dear Basketball, which was based on a poem he wrote in 2015 after announcing his retirement from the NBA.
While the Los Angeles Lakers have had their fair share of legendary players, few are as beloved or well-known as Kobe Bryant. Though he may have started his life on the other side of the country, Bryant spent nearly half his life as a Laker. In the wake of his tragic death, Los Angeles has lost a true legend.
Watch the video to find out everything we know about Kobe Bryant's helicopter crash so far.

Crystal Cove State Park Travel Guide | Newport Beach | California Travel Tips
California travel expert Veronica Hill shares her Crystal Cove State Park Travel Guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.
This 1930s beach community is one of the most unique places to stay in Southern California. Located in Newport Coast along 3 1/2 miles of gorgeous ocean strand, Crystal Cove State Park is home to a collection of 46 vintage cottages built between the 1920s and 1930s.
Today, 21 Crystal Cove cottages have been restored for public use. The Crystal Cove Alliance and California State Parks are working hard to preserve the rest — including cottage No. 13, which was used in Bette Midler's movie Beaches.
Since 1918, more than 16 movies were filmed at this beautiful California resort, including two versions of Treasure Island.
Visiting Crystal Cove State Park is like stepping back in time, and the Alliance has worked hard to maintain its vintage charm. In fact, this historic district and 2,400 acres of back country looks much like it did during the 1930s to 1950s.
Crystal Cove park was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The houses are Southern California's last intact examples of vernacular beach architecture.
Begin your visit at the Los Trancos parking lot off PCH and take the shuttle down to Crystal Cove Beach Cottages and promenade.
Here, you'll find the Beachcomber Cafe, run by Ruby's Diner, which serves up delicious Mediterranean pizza, awesome ahi tacos and one of the best mai tais I've enjoyed outside of Hawaii. Each day at sunset, the restaurant still raises the martini flag to announce cocktail hour, in keeping with a decades-old tradition.
During the summer, arrive early and plan a full day at Crystal Cove State Beach, where you can explore the tide pools, do some plein air painting, or fly a kite.
If you're feeling energetic, you can climb three flights of stairs to the historic Crystal Cove Shake Shack, which has been serving up delicious milk shakes to adoring fans since the 1960s.
While you're here, stop by the visitors center where you can learn more about Crystal Cove Historic District. Public tours of the cottages are offered at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month.
Two of the most popular Crystal Cove rentals are the Cottage No. 1 Beach Pad (for ADA disabled guests) and Cottage No. 33, the Romantic Retreat.
For budget travel to the Crystal Cove beach cottages, consider the dorm rooms with private locking bedrooms. Each shares common areas like the kitchen, living room and bathroom. Starting at $33 a night, they're one of the best oceanfront bargains in Southern California.
Be sure to plan ahead, because these adorable beach bungalows are booked 7 months in advance.

Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.
