Ngorongoro Tanzania
Deemed the eighth wonder of the world, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken volcano caldera in the world. It is about 68 Sq.KM in area and the floor lies over 700M below it’s rim from which there are breathtaking views. Its enclosed area affords the visitor guaranteed delight at the concentration of game to be seen, including the endangered black rhino. Its soda lake hosts a large flock of lesser flamingoes- a sight to behold!
Ngorongoro Conservation Area Documentary ???????? Tanzania Travel Guide
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans vast expanses of highland plains, savanna, savanna woodlands and forests. Established in 1959 as a multiple land use area, with wildlife coexisting with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists practicing traditional livestock grazing, it includes the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest caldera. The property has global importance for biodiversity conservation due to the presence of globally threatened species, the density of wildlife inhabiting the area, and the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and other animals into the northern plains. Extensive archaeological research has also yielded a long sequence of evidence of human evolution and human-environment dynamics, including early hominid footprints dating back 3.6 million years. (

Ngorongoro Wildlife. Tanzania - Full Documentary
▶FULL DOCUMENTARIES |
▶ Spanish video:
Approximately three million years ago in the northern region of what is today Tanzania, the Ngorongoro volcano became inactive. As its internal pressure diminished so its immense central bulk caved in creating the largest volcanic crater on our planet.
The conditions of this land, whereby the crater's slopes protected it from the outside world, were perfect for wildebeest, elephants, buffalo, flamingos, cranes and a whole host of other creatures... And the once uninhabited and desolate Ngorongoro crater filled with life.
The landscape has radically changed since then and today the Ngorongoro crater harbours numerous ecosystems.
The biological diversity within its interior makes the Ngorongoro crater a unique and remarkable wildlife sanctuary ...
Three families of lions live in Ngorongoro. Their interaction with lion populations from the outside is almost non-existent and inbreeding is frequent. Genetic diversity has reduced by 40% compared to that in the neighbouring Serengeti and the reduction in the number of cubs in each litter is beginning to seem indicative of a an increasing weakness of the species.
Only adult male elephants live in Ngorongoro, the crater lacking sufficient vegetation to feed the large herds made up of females and their offspring.
Another species that goes back a long way here in the crater, and which is impervious to the daily struggles between predators and prey, is man. Some 10,000 years ago the stone-bowl people lived off these lands. Then came the Mblu and, after them, the Datoga.
The Masai, who are the current inhabitants of the crater, expelled the Datoga and maintain numerous quarrels with these people even today. They refer to the Datoga as the strong enemy.
The abundance of life and water in Ngorongoro never fail to surprise visitors to the old volcano. The mountains that have so jealously guarded the secret of this crater, hiding it away and caring for its climate, have made it a unique enclave in Africa. The large bovid herds, the flamingos, the black rhinoceroses and the elephants enjoy a bonanza without equal in the rest of East Africa.
The days when the Ngorongoro volcano spewed its furious rivers of burning lava from the bowels of the earth are well gone and, today, the crater, together with the Lengai volcano -the Masai God's Mountain- offers us a picture of a little piece of paradise.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Tanzania, Africa
The last part of our journey through Nairobi, Kenya and Tanzania, Africa Today we will be exploring the Ngorogoron crater in western Tanzania. Our last 2 days before we start our journey back to the states, Boston. We encounter many animals in the crater. It was more than we expected and had a great time by ourselves. We met Aaron Neville on the rim of the crater. Had a great time at St. Catharine's Monastery. The people there were the best. Great accommodations and the food couldn't be beat. Many thanks to all the Benedictine Camaldolesi Nuns for putting up with us. We will always remember our stay there.
Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania
Based on fossil evidence found at the Olduvai Gorge, it is known that various hominid species have occupied the area for 3 million years. Hunter-gatherers were replaced by pastorialists a few thousand years ago. The Mbulu came to the area about 2,000 years ago, and were joined by the Datooga around the year 1700. Both groups were driven from the area by the Maasai in the 1800s. Massive fig trees in the northwest of the Lerai Forest are sacred to the Maasai and Datooga people. Some of them may have been planted on the grave of a Datago leader who died in battle with the Maasai around 1840.
No Europeans are known to have set foot in the crater until 1892, when it was visited by Dr. Oscar Baumann. Two German brothers farmed in the crater until the outbreak of World War I, after leasing the land from the administration of German East Africa. Dr. Baumann shot three rhinos while camped in the crater, and the German brothers regularly organized shooting parties to entertain their German friends. They also attempted to drive the wildebeest herds out of the crater.
The Ngorongoro area originally was part of the Serengeti National Park when it was created by the British in 1951. Maasai continued to live in the newly created park until 1959, when repeated conflicts with park authorities over land use led the British to evict them to the newly declared Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority is the governing body regulating use and access to the NCA. The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Land in the conservation area is multi-use: it is unique in Tanzania as the only conservation area providing protection status for wildlife whilst allowing human habitation. Land use is controlled to prevent negative effects on the wildlife population. For example, cultivation is prohibited at all but subsistence levels.
The area is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and to the north-west, it adjoins the Serengeti National Park and is contiguous with the southern Serengeti plains, these plains also extend to the north into unprotected Loliondo division and are kept open to wildlife through trans-human pastoralism practiced by Maasai. The south and west of the area are volcanic highlands, including the famous Ngorongoro Crater and the lesser known Empakai. The southern and eastern boundaries are approximately defined by the rim of the Great Rift Valley wall, which also prevents animal migration in these directions.
The annual ungulate migration passes through the NCA, with wildebeest and zebra moving south into the area in December and moving north in June. This movement changes seasonally with the rains, but the migration will traverse almost the entire plains in search of food. The NCA has a healthy resident population of most species of wildlife, in particular the Ndutu Lake area to the west has strong cheetah and lion populations.

NGORONGORO CRATER - TANZANIA - GARDEN OF EDEN
Any Northern Safari in Tanzania is likely to end with the piece de la resistance known as the Ngorongoro Crater. This deep calderon of an anicent volcano is located in the Ngorongo Conservation Area. Some consider the crater to be the most remarkable landmark in all of Africa. Like no place on earth it is known for its diverse eco-systems and variety of animal life typical of an African safari.
I turn to Wiki for more detail. The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago, is 610 metres (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometres (100 square miles). Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 to 5,800 metres (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high.[10][11][12] The elevation of the crater floor is 1,800 metres (5,900 feet) above sea level. The Crater was voted by Seven Natural Wonders as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in Arusha, Tanzania in February 2013.
Approximately 25,000 large animals, mostly ungulates, live in the crater. Large animals in the crater include the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), the local population of which declined from about 108 in 1964-66 to between 11-14 in 1995, the African buffalo or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer), and the hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius).[19] There also are many other ungulates: the blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) (7,000 estimated in 1994), Grant's zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) (4,000), the common eland (Taurotragus oryx), and Grant's (Nanger granti) and Thomson's gazelles (Eudorcas thomsonii) (3,000).[19] Waterbucks (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) occur mainly near Lerai Forest.[19] There are no topis (Damaliscus lunatus), oribis (Ourebia oribi), or crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus).[9] Impala (Aepyceros melampus) are absent because the open woodland they prefer does not exist.[1] Giraffe also are absent, possibly because of a lack of browse species.[1] Tanzanian cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus raineyii), East African wild dog (Lycaon pictus lupinus), and African leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) are rarely seen.
NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania.
Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area, is recognized by one private organization as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of the Arusha Region.
It has been reported in 2009 that the government authority has proposed a reduction of the population of the conservation area from 65,000 to 25,000.
There are plans being considered for 14 more luxury tourist hotels, so people can access the unparalleled beauty of one of the world's most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries, however the people who own the land has had few benefits of tourism, also no management job in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area has gone to the local Maasai pastoralists, who were helped by a 2013 international Avaaz campaign from being evicted from pastries bordering Serengeti National Park because a private luxury safari company's interests.
