Traveling in Nicaragua: The Coffee Delegates
A fast-paced glimpse of intentional travel in action, in rural Nicaragua.
Intentional travel is not a mission, it's not a luxury tour... think of it as a field trip for adults.
In this case, eight North Americans joined Just Coffee on a delegation to meet women coffee producers in Nicaragua. Just Coffee is committed to fair trade and transparency, and invites anyone to travel to meet the growers.
We were lucky enough to be there when 21 women got keys to new homes -- more than two years after a landslide swallowed up their entire mountain community.
Over seven days we learned about coffee, fair trade, organic farming and women's empowerment. We met growers who have organized into an all-women's NGO to promote education and literacy among women, fight domestic violence and increase their income through sustainable agriculture.
As Coffee Delegates, or intentional travelers, our views of the world and of what we consume have been expanded. Coffee may be a commodity, but it is not an anonymous product that just appears on our shelves. Now we've seen what it takes to get a bean from an individual farmer in Nicaragua to our steaming cups at home. Every sip reinforces the new connections we've made -- to the growers and to our fellow Delegates.

Travel to Managua, Nicaragua - First Nica Trip Ever! - 4K - Ep. 1
We set off to the adventure filled country of Nicaragua for the first time. See our arrival to Managua in the beautiful 4k video here:
We set off for our first trip to #Managua, #Nicaragua. As we left Los Angeles, California, we encountered strange lights in the night’s sky. We later learned that this was due to a nearby Space X launch. After we started our #travel from LAX, we had a brief layover in El Salvador. Finally, we make it to Managua, Nicaragua. We take in all of the new sights, smells and sounds and we hear to our hotel. We then meet with my family who I’ve heard about for my entire life. Then we visit the Paseo Xolotlan. On the way, we encounter the main street filled with Nativity sets. It is to be expected when we’re visiting around Christmas. We walk around Paseo Xolotlan and take in the airplane on display, the miniature old city & miniature cathedrals there and view the waterpark. Later we head to dinner for some local cuisine at Concina De Dona Haydee. Our trip was already off to an amazing start before we get ready to head to San Juan Del Sur.
This is Episode 1 and the first episode of my Nicaragua #Adventure Series. There's plenty of excitement ahead as we travel throughout this beautiful country and truly learn how to have more fun!
Note: Our trip took place before the protests began in April of 2018. Please monitor the news and travel advisories for current travel conditions.

Medical Brigade: Nicaragua 2015
Florida International University (Biscayne Bay Campus) - Alternative Breaks - Medical Brigade - Spring 2015
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On July 2014, Stephanie Prieto and Julian Martinez (me) became co-site leaders for the alternative spring breaks trip for 2015. Both of us are premed Biology majors and decided to work alongside Panorama Service Expeditions (PSE) for the first ever medical brigade at Biscayne Bay Campus.
After fund raising about $9,800 in bake sales, cannings, special events in town, and from generous donators we achieved this goal and were able to go to Esteli, Nicaragua on March 8, 2015.
While stationed in Esteli, we were able to know how the medical system works in Nicaragua and we were able to visit a local private medical school where we were able to see the students classrooms, practice rooms, and study areas. We also visited local clinics and helped take vitals and learn how local health functions with the countries struggles.
In two neighboring communities, FIU and the local medical school were able to host field clinics that were located in the communities churches. Many people knew the students were coming and walked hours to see us. We held a variety of stations where we took vitals, tested blood types and glucose levels, had private consultations with Dr. German Mendoza, and had dental check ups.
Many lives were changed on this trip and thanks to the service of all the students and the help from FIU and PSE the trip was a tremendous success.
On March 14, 2015 we came back to home and realized how much we were changed and how certain we were that we wanted to continue providing service to those in need.

OUR BLOG:
PALACAGUINA, NICARAGUA.
Welcome to my vlog! We are sharing with you our trip from the U.S. to PALACAGUINA, NICARAGUA. We are moving our family to Central America to open a school. The work of our mission is to bring education to children that would not otherwise receive education. We are currently building the school and we would love your prayers and involvement if you so choose. Currently we are in Austin, Texas and preparing to sell our possessions and move our family down to Nicaragua at the end of this year. This vlog will share with you what goes on in the day of the life of such a journey. Please subscribe and follow us!
About our School:
Palacaguina Christian Academy! PCA was formed as an extension of Managua Christian Academy in Managua, Nicaragua. MCA is a school that has been meeting the needs of students in Managua since 2005. MCA is considered one of the top private schools in Managua with an excellent reputation hard earned by a dedicated and experienced staff. When Henry, the founder of MCA, was asked to expand his school into Palacaguina he was amazed (to say the least), as not many private schools are given permission to expand. Through working with the local government and because of MCA’s excellent reputation, Palacaguina Christian Academy was granted permission to open in February of 2017.
PCA is a bilingual christian school nestled in a small, green mountainside, on the NE side of Palacaguina, Nicaragua. PCA’s initial goal upon the school’s opening in February 2017 is to educate children from pre-k to kindergarten with a planned expansion, adding a grade level every year until PCA becomes a fully operating pre-school, primary school and secondary school for the students of Palacaguina. PCA will also provide space for community events, bible studies, college classes and a library that not only students will use, but will be available to the community at large as the only library in town. PCA is a community supported and needed unique school within the region because of its bilingual status and will serve as a launching point for students providing access to a bright future.
Nicaragua Travel: To Greytown Airport & Rio Indio Lodge
Joshua Berman, co-author of Moon Nicaragua and Living Abroad in Nicaragua, reports from the farthest reaches of the Rio San Juan, where a $12 million airstrip was recently cut out of the rainforest on the site of old Greytown. Berman has published articles about Nicaragua in The New York Times, and has served as location specialist for the Travel Channel there. In this video, Tranquilo Traveler in Nicaragua: Greytown Airport & Rio Indio Lodge, Berman heads to the southeast corner of the country, to The Rio Indio Lodge and Rio Indio Maiz Biological Reserve, the largest virgin lowland rainforest north of the Amazon. Nicaragua Travel Vlog 2: Nature Tour in Montibelli Reserve Nicaragua
This video is about my nature and birdwatching tour in which we went hiking at Reserva Montibelli in Nicaragua, less than an hour drive away from Managua. It is one of the best places in Nicaragua in my opinion, and you will get the best of Nicaragua wildlife, Nicaragua birdwatching, and neotropical birds. We saw all kinds of beautiful tropical birds, including toucans, a motmot, parrots, hummingbirds, and trogons, along with some other cool wildlife.
In this video I hope to educate you about some interesting things you may see on a walk through a tropical forest and show you what birdwatching in an exotic tropical location like Nicaragua is really like. It was a great start to a week full of all kinds of adventures, and a good way to healthily immerse myself in nature before the partying started.
Montibelli has a network of trails that passes through mature seasonal dry tropical forest and farms of coffee and dragonfruit. There's beautiful views in which you can see volcano Masaya in the distance.
The tour company that organized the tour is called Duran Tours. Here is a link to their Website:
Alejandro Cesar Lee was the head nature guide. He is a great guy, speaks English very well, and is an expert of the natural history of Nicaragua. He is also an elite birder and excellent at pointing out birds. I highly recommend him! The E-Bird species list of our bird walk that morning is found in this link:

I take a trip to Bluefields, Nicaragua to extend my Nicaraguan Visa by another 90 days aka a visa extension. This was a great trip and I have a new appreciation for Bluefields along the Caribbean coast which is the capital of the RAAS in Nicaragua. It was a super sunny day, met lots of friendly people and got some incredible deals shopping - what's not to like?!

Nicaragua protest march Nov 21
Nicaragua took to the streets Nov. 21, first with anti- then pro-government marches. The Sandinistas, the ruling party of President Daniel Ortega, claim the march by the former group was a poorly attended failure. This video shows a remarkable turnout, possibly the largest protest against Daniel Ortega to date. This audio slide show is by The Nica Times editor Tim Rogers.
