A special tour on private property, at the request of the owner.
Joseph L. Redding arrived in Nicasio in 1862 and quickly took on the life of a dairy farmer, livestock trader, and meat purveyor. Nicasio was a booming social and commercial center of Marin County for several decades, and ‘McNeil & Sons’ was the local turn-of-the century butcher shop that still stands on the Nicasio town square.
Situated at 1,200 feet elevation near the windswept crest of Mount Shroyer, the incredibly cool and coastal Redding Ranch Vineyard personifies ‘farming on the edge’. From the fruit of the vines come wines that recall this agricultural and family heritage in Marin County from the original McNeil & Sons receipt of business. The Chalone Wine Group recognized the potential of this site in 1999, and planted twenty acres of high-density Pommard and Dijon 667, 777, and 828 clone Pinot Noir vines in the spring of 2000. The incredibly rocky soils are iron rich and very well-drained. The high elevation guards against frost, while the consistent fog layer and west-southwest exposure provide even ripening and intense flavor development.

California Cheese Crawl 2019 VLOG | San Francisco, Napa Valley, Modesto, etc. | The Tummy Train
[Close captioned in case there are some things I said that don't sound clear.]
Finally sharing this vlog from my California Cheese Crawl experience with Real California Milk/California Milk Advisory Board!
It was three awesome days filled with glorious cheese, but more importantly, it was nice to learn about all the sustainability efforts being taken by these companies.
From methane digesters that converts waste to electricity, to treatment ponds that clean discarded water for irrigation, it’s quite an eye-opening experience! We were received by all the companies with such enthusiasm and warmth, it really made the entire experience go beyond anything I was expecting.
Here are the locations mentioned in the video by order of appearance:
San Francisco Ferry Building-
Fiscalini Cheese Company, Modesto-
Hilmar Cheese Company, Hilmar-
Dewz Restaurant, Modesto
Gott's Roadside, St. Helena

John Wick and Calla Rose Ostrander: Carbon Farming | Bioneers 2017
Sequestering carbon from the atmosphere back into the soil is emerging as among the top biological strategies to radically mitigate climate disruption on large scales. It’s also a rapidly growing movement among farmers across the country, including in conservative communities – because it IS conservative… of the land and soil. John and Calla Rose are visionary leaders of the Marin Carbon Project, a gold standard of carbon farming research demonstrations. John is co-owner (with his wife Peggy Rathmann) of the Nicasio Native Grass Ranch. Calla Rose, former Fellow with the Rocky Mountain Institute, has led policy and climate action programs with Aspen, CO and San Francisco, CA, and is a leading advocate for and expert on agricultural carbon sequestration.
