National Christmas Tree and Mormon Temple Festival of Lights, Washington DC
Since 1923, the United States has held a tradition of lighting a National Christmas Tree in Washington, DC. In 1978, a live 40-foot Colorado blue spruce was transplanted from York, Pennsylvania to its present site on the Ellipse, the grassy area south of the White House.
In 1954, a Pathway of Peace, 56 smaller, decorated trees representing all 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia were planted surrounding the National Christmas Tree.
Musical performances by volunteer choirs and dancers, will be held nightly on the Ellipse stage.
Each year sponsoring organizations from each state provide tree decorations that are encased in a protective plastic globe to shield it from the weather. The National Christmas Tree lighted every year by the president and first lady.

Last call? Prominent locals want Trump's DC hotel to lose liquor license
Last call? Prominent locals want Trump's DC hotel to lose liquor license:
Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos:
A local regulatory agency is nearing a decision on whether to recommend a review of Trump International Hotel’s liquor license after seven D.C. residents filed a complaint arguing the hotel’s owner, President Donald Trump, is “not of good character.” The law governing liquor licenses in D.C. states that in order to acquire and maintain a liquor license in the city, the owner of the bar or restaurant is required to be “of good character,” and two retired judges and five local religious leaders say the president doesn’t measure up. “President Trump is not above the law,” said Joshua A. Levy, a lawyer for the D.C. residents who filed the complaint to the Washington D.C. Alcohol Beverage Control Board in June. “In D.C., the law requires an owner of a liquor license to be of ‘good character,’ and Mr. Trump is not. He should transfer the ownership to someone who can comply with the law or show cause why his license should not be revoked.” The president’s supporters and officials within the Trump Organization, which manages the hotel property, are crying foul, dismissing the effort as a political cheap shot. “This is not about the neighborhood, not about the common good and certainly not about the law, Alan Garten, general counsel of the Trump Organization, told ABC News in a statement Wednesday. This is politics at its worst and an obvious effort to misuse the power of government to advance a political agenda.” Political stunt or not, the city agency with the authority to revoke it is conducting a serious inquiry, a spokesperson told ABC News, and officials plan to respond to the complaint in writing by Sept. 18. “The complaint is currently with ABRA’s Enforcement Division, where it is still under review,” agency spokesman Max Bluestein said. The “good character” provision is typically invoked when a liquor license is up for transfer or renewal, Bluestein told ABC News, but the complaint against the Trump International Hotel pertains an active liquor license that is not up for renewal until March 2019. In bringing the complaint, the D.C. residents – Judge Joan Goldfrank, Judge Henry H. Kennedy, Jr., Rev. William Lamar IV, Rev. Jennifer Butler, Rev. Dr. Timothy Tee Boddie, Rabbi Jack Moline and Rabbi Aaron Potek – cited that Trump agreed to pay $25 million to settle fraud claims arising from the now-defunct Trump University and that multiple contractors who have worked for Trump have filed suit against him claiming they were never paid. Garten, the Trump Organization lawyer, urged members of the Washington D.C. Alcohol Beverage Control Board – who are appointed by the mayor and confirmed to four-year terms by the city council in the heavily Democratic District of Columbia – to “see this for what it is and not allow itself to be used to advance anyone’s political goals.” “The statute is clearly being distorted for political gain and the suggested interpretation would create an absurd precedent, not to mention a slippery slope, he said. Democrats call on Trump to repay DC for Fourth of July, inaguration
Several democratic leaders of U.S. Congress sent President Trump a letter Friday, demanding he reimburse the District of Columbia for the costs surrounding his inauguration and the Fourth of July Salute to America event. Wednesday, the mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, sent the president a letter, similarly asking for reimbursement. She said the events cost the city around $9 million in total.
Serial killer - The DC Snipers
A.K.A.: The Beltway Sniper
Classification: Spree killer
Characteristics: Sniper attacks
Number of victims: 10 +
Date of murders: September-October 2002
Date of arrest: October 24, 2002
Date of birth: December 31, 1960
Victims profile: James Martin, 55 / James Buchanan, 39 / Premkumar Walekar, 54 / Sarah Ramos, 34 / Lori A. Lewis-Rivera, 25 / Pascal Charlot, 72 / Dean Harold Meyers, 53 / Kenneth Bridges, 53 / Linda Franklin, 47 / Conrad Johnson, 35
Method of murder: Shooting (high powered rifle)
Location: Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia, USA
Status: Executed by lethal injection in Virginia on November 10, 2009
John Allen Muhammad along with his 17 year old partner, Lee Boyd Malvo, carried out the 2002 D.C. sniper attacks, killing 10 people and wounding several others in the Washinton area. Most of the shootings were made with a high powered rifle from inside the trunk of Muhammads vehicle, which had been modified with heavy window tint, a hinged rear seat that provided easy access to the trunk from the passenger compartment, and a hole that had been cut into the trunk lid just above the license plate.
Born John Allen Williams, Muhammad joined the Nation of Islam in 1987 and later changed his surname to Muhammad. Drawings by Malvo describe the murders as part of a jihad. A soldier-turned-auto-mechanic, Mr. Muhammad held a deep grudge against his ex-wife and society. During the Maryland trial, Mr. Malvo testified that the intent of their shooting spree had been to create havoc to cover for Mr. Muhammad’s plans to kidnap his three children. The longer-term goal was to extort law enforcement into giving them money to stop the shootings. Mr. Muhammad planned to take the money and move to Canada with Mr. Malvo and his three children.
His trial for one of the murders (the murder of Dean Harold Meyers in Prince William County, Virginia) began in October 2003, and the following month, he was found guilty of capital murder. Four months later he was sentenced to death. While awaiting execution in Virginia, in August 2005, he was extradited to Maryland to face some of the charges there, for which he was convicted of six counts of first-degree murder on May 30, 2006. Upon completion of the trial activity in Maryland, it was planned that he next be returned to Virginias death row unless some agreement is reached with another state or the District of Columbia seeking to try him. He has not been tried on additional charges, although he faces potential trials in three other states and the District of Columbia involving other shootings.
The DC-area sniper case was cracked after one of the suspects called police and mentioned that they were responsible for an Alabama robbery-murder outside a liquor store. Investigators in Montgomery were able to match a fingerprint found on a weapons magazine in the parking lot to Malvos immigration records. After connecting Malvo to the Montgomery killing, authorities traced him to a school in Bellingham, Washington, then to a home in Tacoma where he lived with Muhammad. Police then linked the sniper team to Mohammads blue Caprice which was registered in New Jersey. That night police broadcast a description of the suspects and the vehicle that led to a trucker calling police and saying he had spotted them in a Maryland rest stop, where they were arrested.

SUMMARY
=======
John Glover Roberts Jr. (born January 27, 1955) is an American attorney serving as the 17th and current Chief Justice of the United States, since 2005. He was nominated by President George W. Bush after the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and has been described as having a conservative judicial philosophy in his jurisprudence. Even so, Roberts has shown a willingness to work with the Supreme Court's liberal bloc and is regarded as a key swing vote on the Court.Roberts was born in Buffalo, New York, but grew up in northwest Indiana and was educated in a private school. He then attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where he was a managing editor of the Harvard Law Review. After being admitted to the bar, he served as a law clerk for Judge Henry Friendly and then Rehnquist before taking a position in the Attorney General's office during the Reagan Administration. He went on to serve the Reagan administration and the George H. W. Bush administration in the Department of Justice and the Office of the White House Counsel, before spending 14 years in private law practice. During this time, he argued 39 cases before the Supreme Court. Notably, he represented 19 states in United States v. Microsoft Corp.In 2003, Roberts was appointed as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by George W. Bush. During his two-year tenure on the D.C. Circuit, Roberts authored 49 opinions, eliciting two dissents from other judges, and authoring three dissents of his own. In 2005, Roberts was nominated to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court, initially to succeed retiring Sandra Day O'Connor. When Rehnquist died before Roberts's confirmation hearings began, Bush instead nominated Roberts to fill the chief justice position.
Roberts has authored the majority opinion in many landmark cases, including Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, Shelby County v. Holder, and National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius.

Trump Takes Center Stage at July 4th 'Salute to America' Event With Jets, Tanks
President Donald Trump is getting what he wants for the nation’s birthday: a celebration featuring fireworks, fighter jets and tanks that makes him the center of attention.
Trump will speak from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Thursday evening, remaking the capital’s July 4th festivities into a display of military might mixed with presidential politics. The White House said Trump’s message won’t be political -- Trump is calling the speech a “Salute to America” -- but it comes as the 2020 campaign is heating up.
“Today, we come together as one nation,” Trump said in an excerpt of his speech released by the White House. “We celebrate our history, our people, and the heroes who proudly defend our flag -- the brave men and women of the United States military!”
The city hosted a parade earlier in the day before the evening program on the National Mall, which is scheduled to include flyovers by fighter jets, bombers and even Air Force One, and the Trump speech.
Trump has promised the “show of a lifetime,” but it may not go entirely the president’s way. Afternoon rains and forecasts of scattered thunderstorms prompted a flash-flood watch alert. And some aides privately fear crowds won’t meet the president’s expectations -- evoking his 2017 inauguration.
Protesters have a permit to display an inflatable version of the president that depicts him as a baby in a diaper with small hands. A similar blimp has greeted Trump on trips to London, but the Washington version won’t be allowed to leave the ground. The protesters deflated their blimp on Thursday as storms threatened the area.
Trump is effectively rebranding a celebration that attracts thousands of families to watch the fireworks but almost never includes presidential speeches on the Mall. Critics say his revisions risk turning Washington’s July 4th into a de-facto Trump rally that’s likely to draw counter-protests.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said in a speech in Iowa Thursday that for Trump, the event was “designed more to stroke his ego than celebrate American ideals.”
“Donald Trump is incapable of celebrating what makes America great -- because he doesn’t get it,” the former vice president said in prepared remarks.
The White House rejected the idea that the celebration would be political. Trump told reporters on Monday that the event will be “about this country and it’s a salute to America.” He said he hoped for a large turnout. Asked if he could give a speech to all Americans, Trump replied: “I think so, I think I’ve reached most Americans.” He went on to criticize Democrats on health care and taxes.
Trump conceived the event after his plans for a military parade on Veterans Day were stymied by complaints from local officials about the cost. The president has been enamored of the idea of a Washington celebration with a military component since attending the 2017 Bastille Day parade in Paris, which included an aerial display, thousands of marching soldiers and hundreds of military vehicles.
The Defense Department said Tuesday that it would provide a pair of M1A2 Abrams tanks and two M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles for the event. They were delivered on flatbed trucks ahead of Thursday’s event, to avoid damaging streets.
There will be several flyovers, including by the Navy’s Blue Angels flight team. The air show will also include Air Force One, a Marine One presidential helicopter, two F-35 fighter jets, two F-22 Raptors, two F/A-18 Hornets, a B2 bomber and four Apache helicopters.
The event also is renewing a long-simmering feud with local officials in Washington. The city has said it’s still owed about $7 million from costs associated with Trump’s inauguration but the administration official said the District hasn’t asked for funds from upcoming federal budgets.
Trump said Wednesday on Twitter that the cost of the event “will be very little compared to what it is worth,” while the administration official earlier declined to say how bill would be covered. Norton said Trump is “doubling up, tripling up on what he owes the District of Columbia.”

USA: WASHINGTON: TOP NAVAL OFFICER SHOOTS HIMSELF
English/Nat
The U-S Naval Chief of Operations has died apparently after shooting himself in the chest.
Admiral Jeremy Michael Boorda's body was found in a side yard next to his quarters in the Washington Navy Yard.
His death comes in the wake of an investigation by Newsweek magazine calling into question the Navy Admiral's military decorations.
Admiral Jeremy Boorda - known as Mike - the United States' top naval officer has died after reportedly shooting himself in the chest.
His body was found at 2:05 pm local time - about an hour and a half after he had been told that Newsweek magazine was investigating whether he had worn medals to which he was not entitled.
SOUNDBITE:
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my sad duty to report to you that Admiral Mike Boorda - Chief of Naval Operations - is dead. He was pronounced dead this afternoon at 2:30pm here at Washington D-C General Hospital. He was brought here from the Washington Navy Yard where he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. The Washington D-C police and the Naval Criminal Investigating Service are investigating.
SUPER CAPTION: John Dalton, Navy Secretary
Boorda was due to have met a Newsweek reporter in his office at 2:30 p-m, local time.
But when he was told what the reporters wanted to interview him about, Boorda abruptly announced he was going home for lunch instead of eating the meal that had been brought into his office.
Newsweek was investigating whether Boorda had worn a combat V decoration from the Vietnam war that he was never officially awarded.
SOUNDBITE:
I had a meeting yesterday with Admiral Boorda concerning our programme - and he was in great spirits. We had an excellent meeting with him, the commandant of the Marine Corps and senior Navy and Marine Corps staff and he was in excellent spirits.
SUPER CAPTION: John Dalton, Navy Secretary
President Clinton called the death of the Navy's chief officer a great loss.
SOUNDBITE:
Mike Boorda was the very first enlisted man in the history of our country to rise to become Chief of Naval Operations. He brought extraordinary energy and dedication and good humour to every post he held in a long, distinguished career.
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
Two notes were found at Boorda's residence but their contents have not been revealed.
The navy has been rocked recently by a series of flying accidents and the Naval Academy is still mired in a scandal involving drug-use and other controversies.

EXPLOSIVE! Hillary, The Movie: The Politics of Personal Destruction [FULL HD MOVIE]
EXPLOSIVE DOCUMENTARY! Hillary: The Movie is a political documentary about past United States Senator and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. It was produced by the conservative non-profit organization Citizens United. The producers went to U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to get a declaration that they could show this movie. This case was titled Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and its final decision at the U.S. Supreme Court resulted in a major change in campaign finance law.
The documentary interviewed various conservative figures such as Dick Morris and Ann Coulter and reviewed various scandals in which Hillary Clinton participated, such as the White House travel office controversy, White House FBI files controversy, Whitewater controversy, and cattle futures controversy.
The factual finding of the three-judge district court was that there was no reasonable interpretation [of the movie] other than as an appeal to vote against Clinton, thus making it electioneering communication.
The Supreme Court did not change that decision, but applied the strict scrutiny test for the First Amendment of the Constitution and said corporations could not be banned from making electioneering communications.
