Nijo-jo (Nijo Castle), Kyoto City, Japan
Nijo-jo (Nijojo or Nijo Castle) is located western central part of the Kyoto City Japan. It is designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the finest Japanese Castles.
The castle was originally built in 1603 as the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu. It was completed in 1626 by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, with the addition of some structures transferred from Fushimi Castle (built in Momoyama period; 1573-1614). Nijo Castle is one of the finest examples of early Edo period and Momoyama culture in Japan, as it makes splendid use of early Edo period building designs, lavish paintings, and carvings that Iemitsu generously commissioned.
In 1867, when Yoshinobu, the fifteenth Tokugawa Shogun returned sovereignty to the Emperor, the castle became the property of the Imperial family. In 1884, it was renamed the Nijo Detached Palace. It was donated to the City of Kyoto and renamed Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) in 1939.
The castle was designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

Nijo Castle, Kyoto ???? 二条城●京都 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Nijo Castle in Kyoto was finished in 1626 and was the Shogun's residence when in Kyoto. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with historical importance as the site where the Tokugawa Shogunate formally relinquished ruling power to the Emperor in 1868.
Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) is famous for its inner Ninomaru palace (which has a rigid no photos/filming policy) as well as numerous gardens that are beautiful in spring. The Karamon main gate with its highly ornate design and gold leaf still impresses visitors after many centuries. Nijo-jo is also conveniently located, right next to the Nijojomae subway station.

Visiting Nijo Castle Kyoto | Japan Travel Series
Hey guys! We traveled from Osaka to Kyoto by train in the morning of 17 April 2017. Our first stop over after checking in at K's Backpacker Inn is Nijo Castle. It was unfortunate that I was asked to stop filming while inside the castle, but at least I had a chance to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto, Japan.

Nijo-jo Castle in Kyoto|Japan Travel Guide|京都・元離宮二条城の二の丸御殿や見どころを観光
Nijo-jo Castle in Kyoto,Japan.

Nijo Castle (二条城, Nijōjō) was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). His grandson Iemitsu completed the castle's palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the castle by adding a five story castle keep.
After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell in 1867, Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace for a while before being donated to the city and opened up to the public as a historic site. Its palace buildings are arguably the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan's feudal era, and the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994.
Nijo Castle can be divided into three areas: the Honmaru (main circle of defense), the Ninomaru (secondary circle of defense) and some gardens that encircle the Honmaru and Ninomaru. The entire castle grounds and the Honmaru are surrounded by stone walls and moats.
Visitors to Nijo Castle enter the castle grounds through a large gate in the east. English audio guides are available for rent (500 yen) at a kiosk just inside the gate. Venturing further into the castle will bring you to the Chinese style Karamon Gate, the entrance to the Ninomaru (secondary circle of defense), where the castle's main attraction, the Ninomaru Palace is located.
The Ninomaru Palace served as the residence and office of the shogun during his visits to Kyoto. Surviving in its original form, the palace consists of multiple separate buildings that are connected with each other by corridors with so called nightingale floors, as they squeak when stepped upon as a security measure against intruders. The palace rooms are tatami mat covered and feature elegantly decorated ceilings and beautifully painted sliding doors (fusuma).
Nijo Castle. Kyoto, Japan 【HD】
The Nijo Castle was built in the year 1626 as a residence for the Tokugawa Family. After 1867, the Castle became Imperial property and in 1939 it was donated to the City of Kyoto. Ever since then, this beautiful castle has been open to the public.
Basically, the fortification consists of one external moat and stone wall, the Ninomaru Palace and gardens inside of it, and an inner moat and wall keeping the Honmaru Palace and the respective gardens inside. This castle used to have a five-story turret, but it was destroyed by a fire in the year 1750.
Nowadays, this wonderful example of traditional Japanese architecture and art/decoration is visited by lots of tourist from Japan and many other countries.
In the video, first we see a small display of Chrysanthemum Flowers (Kiku-ka), then the Ninomaru Palace and its gardens, the Honmaru Palace and gardens and finally the general view from the place where the castle turret used to be.
