Swimming with Whale Sharks at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia
In 2012 we were lucky enough to go swimming with the Whale Sharks at Ningaloo Reef out of Exmouth in Western Australia. It is one of the best things I think I've done so far and wanted to share it with you.
Real Aussie Adventures - Ningaloo Reef Whale Shark Swim Exmouth

Ningaloo Reef Whale Sharks, Exmouth, Western Australia
Whale Sharks migrate to Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia (WA) every year, giving visitors to Exmouth a once-in-a-lifetime swim with the largest fish in the world's oceans.
This is one of few places on Earth where these gentle giants come so close to shore, and in July 2013 Tourism Western Australia joined Hans and his wife on a Ningaloo whale shark tour from Exmouth WA to share this truly humbling encounter.
These harmless filter feeders can grow up to 16 metres (52.5 feet) in length, with a mouth spanning over a metre -- an awe-inspiring sight that Hans could only describe as one of the greatest experiences of his life. Their visit also brought Hans and his wife face-to-fin with other incredible marine life of World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef -- the largest fringing reef on Earth.
In striking contrast, a cruise through the rugged red gorge of Yardi Creek in Cape Range National Park, offered a chance to relax and enjoy the stillness and natural beauty of Exmouth, and to spot a hopping rock wallaby or two.
From mid-March to late July, visitors can experience the thrill of swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, with daily whale shark tours operating from Exmouth WA.
Visit to find out more.

Whale Shark Swimming, Australia (Ningaloo Blue Tours)
Well what an amazing day full of excitement. The perfect day to see and swim with this incredible Whale Shark while cruising the ocean waters. Seeing a Whale Shark was not guaranteed on this tour as the season is roughly over. So a glimpse of hope was truly in the air.
We were welcomed by friendly crew and were quickly equip with our wet suits and snorkeling gear. All ready to jump into our first snorkel when our captain said he had a spotting of a Whale Shark and if we want to go to it. Of course we said YESSS!!!
We jumped in the ocean in the middle of nowhere waiting for the signal to look in the water, the first sighting didn't go to plan. The whale shark turned and left us with only a short sighting. The other three goes were a success.
During our tour we were extremely lucky to see Humpback whales, spinner dolphins, Risso dolphins ( not commonly seen as they prefer deep waters) and Blue whales ( A mother and her calf, The mother was roughly 26 meters).

SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS IN NINGALOO NATIONAL MARINE PARK EXMOUTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
this was a report on the syndicated magazine show, American Journal done in 1997. It was an amazing experience especially working with the premier underwater photographers, Ron and Valerie Taylor. Alas, poor Ron died a few years ago, but they are wonderful people and the whale sharks...well they're big and beautiful. I was pitching to anchor Nancy Glass during the intro, holding the mouthpiece in order for my voice to be recorded by Ron's camera.
Swimming with whale sharks along the Ningaloo Reef!
We headed up to Exmouth just in time for the whale shark season to begin. For our birthdays, we decided to splurge a bit and go on a tour along the Ningaloo reef to swim with the gentle giants of the Indian Ocean. Whale sharks eat only plankton and small fish, so it's super safe to jump in and swim along side them. Our boat had a spotter plane that looked to find a friend for us, and then the fun began! We came across a young (5-15 years old) 4 meter male. Whale sharks live up to 100 years and can get up to 12 meters long--their size is proportionate to how long they've lived, maturing at the age of 30. We also had some great snorkelling time on the inner reef. Such an awesome day!!

3 Islands Whale Shark Dive Exmouth WA Holiday & Travel Guide
With the Coral Coast being one of the only places in Australia where the Whale Shark visits regularly and consistently and in large numbers, you can organise a tour to get in the water and swim with them.
We went out with 3 Islands Whale Shark Dive. We had heard may good reports about them and as soon as we boarded the boat we could see why.
The day starts with a snorkel on the Ningaloo Reef as we wait for our spotter plane to get up on the air. The snorkel is a great way to start the day and anyone who has not snorkeled before or is not very experienced at it has the opportunity to learn and get comfortable with being in the water.
Once the plane is up we are back in the boat waiting for the call that a shark has been seen. Then our adventure begins.
The boat is split in to 2 groups and one group goes in to the water at a time to swim with the shark. During our day our group got in tot he water 7 times and we have the most amazing and incredible experience.
Snacks and lunch are provided throughout the day and we were also lucky enough to see humpback whales, a huge tiger shark, dolphins and turtles.
The crew are incredibly passionate about what they do and the Whale Shark that they swim with and doing one of these tours helps to aid awareness and protection of these animals. A portion of the money from you ticket goes towards the research of these little understood yet threatened fish. And once you swim with them it will touch your heart and you will also want to do what you can to preserve these special animals.
An experience of a lifetime and a memory that will stay with you forever.
