Visiting a Shangri-La for Animals: Noah's Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary
• AW882; Aired on 12 Feb 2009
Mr Raymund Wee is the Founder of Noah's Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary (NANAS). He built a comfortable home for his rescued friends by selling his shop and house. With the nearly US$1 million in proceeds, he first started his sancturary in 1995. The main goal of the sanctuary is to provide a safe, secure haven for residents where they can live out their lives in happiness and with respect and love.

SOS – A dog was knocked down by a car!
NANAS was alerted about an incident by a passerby who saw an injured dog that was knocked by a car. Looking at the dog’s picture received, the injury could have happened several days.
This afternoon, our volunteers Sharon and Chia Hwei went to the location to check and managed to find the dog. Before helping the dog, the volunteers went around to ask the shop keepers for more information.
According to one shop keeper, they said they will bring the dog to the vet later. (Do you think they will bring the dog to the vet? Several days have pass and doubt it will happen – just saying to console themselves that they are doing a good deed.)
The dog has suffered for a few days – if the shop owner had showed care and concern, they would have brought it to the vet immediately.
We also understand from other shop keepers that the caregiver have brought the dog to the vet for treatment. Looking at the wounds – the treatment that the dog received was just the application of iodine on its open wounds with maggots?
We could not leave the dog on the street to suffer for another day, Sharon tried her best to catch the dog and won its trust knowing that the volunteers were there to help.
The video clearly shows that it trusted our volunteers who was rendering their assistance.
The dog arrived at NANAS this afternoon and it has received treatment at our facilities.
Readers – you be the judge, looking at the dog’s condition, you know that this dog has been suffering silently in pain for a few days, he doesn’t deserve to be on the streets because the street is NOT his home.

14.03.2017 - Grayson rescued and found at AEON Car Park @ Bukit Indah
Helping animals have no boundaries
14 March 2017
Yesterday, we published our Tri-Paws (link: at Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Shelter (NANAS) and shared how happy they have adapted. This morning we received a few messages and emails from both Singaporeans and Malaysians asking if we could help a disabled dog in distress located at a car park near AEON Bukit Indah. Many wrote in because they were worried for the dog's welfare and the “Street is not his home” and it was not a place for a disabled dog.
Sharon and Chia Hwei, Noah’s Ark Angels went to Bukit Indah to check on the dog. They managed to locate the dog and brought it to the sanctuary for immediate medical aid. After some observation and a physical examination, conclusively it was an old injury that he sustained much earlier had led to the paresis of his hind limbs and calcification of his fractured legs the trauma has led to this condition. He is neutered and looking at his condition we can conclude that he was cared for and dumped for some reasons which is hard of an animal lover to comprehend.
We noticed that this is quite common for dogs or cats to get dumped on the streets by their owners when the pet meets with a car accident. Owners refused to send the pet to the vet for treatment for obvious reasons – they conveniently dump the pet and let it wait for a slow death, while the pet has to look for food or get attacked by feral dogs.
We have met owners with accident victims before, when we asked, “How did your dog meet with an accident?”. Their reply is: “Oh, I let my dog out of the house to pee and to go for a walk on its own.” This is the ONE of the most common reply.
We have named it “Grayson”, if you wish to support his medical aid and welfare:

A modern day Noah's Ark offers sanctuary for unwanted animals
(18 Aug 2017) LEAD IN:
More than 1000 abandoned and abused animals from Malaysia and Singapore are being helped by a very special animal sanctuary.
In turn the sanctuary is enabling veterinary students to get unique hands-on experience.
STORYLINE :
Welcome to Noah's Ark.
This animal sanctuary in Malaysia is home to over a thousand unwanted dogs and cats. That's not to mention a stable of horses, three primates, a wild boar and various small animals like rabbits.
The residents are free to roam around the 10 acre compound near Gelang Patah in Johor state in the south of the country.
Noah's Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1995 in Singapore by Raymund Wee, a Singaporean and a former airline pilot.
When the Singapore shelter's land lease expired in 2000, Wee moved the sanctuary across the border to the Southern Malaysia state of Johor.
Over the years, more than a thousand animals from Singapore and Malaysia have made their way to Noah's Ark.
Many were destined to be put down, but they all received a new lease of life after being rescued and brought here by volunteers.
Wee's life-long mission to save unwanted and homeless animals began with a terrible childhood experience where he had to forcibly end his own dog's life.
His dog was suffering great pain from a massive untreatable neck wound and his family could not afford to euthanize the dog at a veterinary clinic.
His father made him end his dog's misery by using a stick to strike it across its neck.
After that horribly painful experience, Wee decided some day, when he could make the choice of life or death for animals, he would always choose life. No animal at the sanctuary is put to death.
But Wee's ultimate goal is not about just saving unwanted animals. He wants to get to the root of the problem, which is to reduce over population of strays on the streets, by neutering.
It's not just simply feeling sorry or servicing the problem, says Wee.
I know it is about the self propagation of the animals and I always stress that over population kills, which indeed it is. We are not talking about pedigrees, we are talking about the mongrels that's allowed to self propagate.
The solution for Wee was an-in house veterinary clinic in the sanctuary to facilitate his animal birth control programme.
Under the supervision of Wee and visiting vets who volunteer their time there, all the animals are neutered and micro-chipped.
At the same time, the clinic is also able to provide veterinary care for sick or injured animal residents.
To be more self reliant and less dependent on the availability of the visiting vets, the clinic also has its own voluntary internship program to ensure a steady supply of trained staff.
Veterinary students from all over the world can apply for a two week placement at the clinic.
The programme offers the interns a hands-on surgical learning experience which they wouldn't be able to easily get elsewhere.
Kristen Tan, a 23 year old Singaporean, who's just finished her third year veterinary studies at the University of Glasgow, is currently interning at Noah's Ark.
She applied after hearing about the surgical opportunities here.
Tan has so far performed multiple spaying and neutering operations at Noah's Ark.
She thinks the surgical experience she gains here will definitely help prepare for her last year studies at school.
Dr Ng Pei Xiang, a veterinary medicine graduate, who also studied at the University of Glasgow, was an intern at Noah's Ark in 2013.
Here in Noah's Ark, we actually get to do the surgeries and that's a huge plus for students like us, says Xiang.
He enjoyed his experience here so much that after multiple internships he's recently accepted a full time job at the sanctuary.

Cherish Life Home Video
A couple of months ago, Winnie Lau was astounded that a kind soul had offered her a 1.3 acres in Ulu Langat itself that is surrounded by Mother Nature. With this new land, the animals will be able to run and roam about freely. To built up a new home for the animals, Winnie Lau would like to appeal to all the kind and generous people out there to help her raise funds for this noble cause.
We are reaching out to all of our friends who care as much as we do about the welfare of animals to help with this effort. Donations of any amount or size will be gratefully accepted and deeply appreciated.
Please join us in building a shelter that has all of the elements in place to deliver the highest level of compassionate care to abandoned and abused animals by giving them a second chance in life.
