☆Bits of knowledge〜Nogi Shrine〜
This shrine honours General Nogi Maresuke, a famed commander in the Russo-Japanese War. Hours after Emperor Meiji's funerary procession in 1912, Nogi and his faithful wife committed ritual suicide, following their master into death. An antiques flea market is held on the shrine grounds on the fourth Sunday of each month (9am to 4pm).

JAPANTRIPGUIDE「Former Nogi Maresuke House 旧乃木邸」Minato-ku, Tokyo
Former Nogi House, or Kyu-Nogi-tei (旧乃木邸), located next to the Nogi Shrine, was the residence of Nogi Maresuke and his family.
The estate was donated to the then Tokyo City by his will and thus has been preserved as a public park up to now. This park was, unlike neigboring Nogi Shrine, managed to avoid being bombard in the war and preserves his modest house with three small buildings which were constructed in around 1902. Its admission is free.

Nogi Jinja Shrine, Nogizaka ●
► The Nogi Shrine was built in 1917 and dedicated to General Nogi Maresuke after his death. The shrine is situated on the area where General Nogi and his wife chose to kill themselves after the Meiji Emperor's death.
The shrine was partly rebuild after the airraids in 1945 and is therefore considered a modern shrine - both in terms of its relatively young age and architecture. Still, in my opinion, this is one of the few new shrines that actually succeeds maintaining a really nice - i'd say genuine - atmosphere and feeling to it. So my guess is, that over time, it will become a classic, traditional place to visit when in Tokyo.
It is located just 8.5 seconds (really!) from Exit 1, Nogizaka Station on Chiyoda Line, Tokyo Metro. - Enjoy the tour!

(Nogi Shrine)
Nogi Shrine is a Shintō shrine in Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo, Japan.
This Shrine dedicated to General Nogi Maresuke and his wife Nogi Shizuko after their death on September 13, 1912.
Nogi Maresuke was a Japanese general in the Imperial Japanese Army and a governor-general of Taiwan. He was one of the commanders during the 1894 capture of Port Arthur from China. He was a prominent figure in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05, as commander of the forces which captured Port Arthur from the Russians.
He was a national hero in Imperial Japan as a model of feudal loyalty and self-sacrifice, ultimately to the point of suicide. In the Satsuma Rebellion, he lost a banner of the emperor in battle, for which he tried to atone with suicidal bravery in order to recapture it, until ordered to stop. In the Russo-Japanese War, he captured Port Arthur but he felt that he had lost too many of his soldiers, so requested permission to commit suicide, which the emperor refused. These two events, as well as his desire not to outlive his master, motivated his suicide on the day of the funeral of the Emperor Meiji.
Following the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912, the general and his wife decided to prove their dedication to the leader by joining him in death. The General committed Seppuku while his wife slit her throat – in the house right next door to the shrine.
