Tourist Sauce (Scotland Golf): Episode 2, North Berwick
North Berwick is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, which helps explain how they got away with building golf holes that are so spectacular and insane. (Written and narrated by D.J.)

North Berwick Beach, North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland, UK
North Berwick is one of the most picturesque, tranquil and relaxing seaside resort in Scotland and offers visitors lots of things to do.
One of the most enjoyable things one should do is walk along North Berwick Beach, which runs past the North Berwick Golf Club and where you can usually find stray golf balls!

Stanford University's golfing history began in the 1920's when Stanford students wanted their own golf course. The Stanford golf team was using the Burlingame Course for practice being coached by Burlingame pro Harold Sampson. Good fortune lead to the team discovering a keen enthusiast, Almon E. Rith who was the University Controller of 1909. He was also a member of the Los Altos Country Club.
It was in the February of 1929 that he managed to convince the Stanford University Board of Trustees to provide land and finance to begin the construction of a golf course. The design of the course was handed over to Al Masters, the manager of the Athletic Department to hire in George C. Thomas Jr. And William Billy Bell to design it.
Early in it's design, Bell considered the possibility of incorporating San Francisquito Creek into the design. Construction commenced in May, 1929 and great care was taken to preserve the oak trees. Water was sparse with the only irrigation for the campus coming from Searsville Lake so the lake was enlarged to enable a capacity of 278,000,000 gallons. It was finally completed and opened on January 1st, 1930.
The Stanford men's golf team''s history goes back to it's foundations in the early 1930's. The mens teams have managed to win eight national championships as well as it's players having won twenty four professional major championships which equates to more than any other team plus seven US and British Amateur titles.
Famous names associated with Stanford include Lawson Little, Bud Brownell, Sandy Tatumand Bob Rosburg then post war times names were known such as Tom Watson, Notah Begay and Tiger Woods.
Featured in this video is the North Berwick Golf Club, situated in Norrth Berwick naturally, the seaside town and former royal burgh in East Lothian, Scotland. It is located on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, around twenty five miles east north east of Edinburgh. Sightseeing in North Berwick includes boat trips to the Bass Rock, Fidra and other islands, the Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick Law and it's beaches. North Berwick is home to two golf courses as well as two eighteen hole putting greens and a Golfing Heritage Trail to follow through the town. Events that take place in North Berwick include the Fringe by the Sea week featival in August.
The golf course featured in the video is the West Links golf course. It holds various championships and is used as a qualifying venue when The Open Championship is held at Muirfield. It was opened in 1832 and occupies a place at the centre of golfing history.
The area used as the home to the course today includes a strip of land adjacent to the beach and extends westward over two miles from the edge of the town centre to the nature reserve at Yellowcraigs. It's been used for golf for at least 400 years! Although participants were not welcomed by local landowners or authorities. The course was officially opened in 1832 with six holes. After a period of expansion which began in 1868, the course featured eighteen holes by 1877. Four golf clubs are based at the West Links; North Berwick Golf Club, Tantallon Golf Club, Bass Rock Golf Club and the North Berwick Ladies Golf Club. The North Berwick GC is the 13th oldest in the world! And only St. Andrews has a club which has been continuously played over the same course for longer. In 2005 it voted to give ladies full rights as members for the first time which is ironic as it was originally the first club in the world to allow ladies to become members.
The second golf course, Gullane Golf Course no 1. Gullane is a town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth much like North Berwick in East Lothian on the east coast of Scotland. Gullane is the home of Muirfield which has hosted The Open Championship on a number of occasions.

North Berwick is a seaside town and former royal burgh in East Lothian, Scotland. North Berwick is situated on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, approximately 25 miles north-east of Edinburgh.
North Berwick became a fashionable holiday resort in the nineteenth century because of its two sandy bays, the East (or Milsey) Bay and the West Bay, and continues to attract holidaymakers to this day. Golf courses at the ends of each bay are open to visitors.
Several of the Islands of the Forth are near the town of North Berwick and visible from it: e.g. Fidra, The Lamb, Craigleith, and Bass Rock; the latter hosts a thriving colony of birds, including puffins, gannets, and other seabirds. The Bass Rock appears white, but this is due largely to the gannets and their guano that cover much of its surface. The seabirds themselves can be observed at close range through remote cameras operated from the recently developed Scottish Seabird Centre near the harbour.
The town is served by North Berwick railway station. The North Berwick Line has provided a rail link with Edinburgh since the nineteenth century and the line, now operated by ScotRail, is still the principal transit link between the town and the capital.
