Galiano Island | Mary Ohara ~ Early life at the Northend of Galiano Island 1930/40's | 14Nov12
Galiano Island welcomed Mary Ohara back to our shores this last week. For background on this story I quote a message from Bonnie Macgillivray, Galiano's School Trustee that she sent in preparation for Mary Ohara's visit to Galiano - she wrote .....
Mary Ohara, Sometimes a gift is passed to you. In the middle of the summer I received an email from shaw. Being naturally skeptical and fearing the almighty virus I almost deleted it. Something, somewhere made me open it. The email was from Reed Oh, a name I did not recognize but I read on. Reed was contacting me as the School Trustee for Galiano and Reed had a mission. Reed was interested in fulfilling a deep regret of his Nana's.
Her dream of receiving her High School diploma had been interrupted by the Second World War, the internment of our Japanese communities all around British Columbia and subsequent exile to Japan. This was a dream Reed hoped that I could help fulfill. This has been the gift to me, the Galiano community and School District #64, Gulf Islands. Since that initial email Reed and I have been communicating back and forth. Reed has been sending me pictures and information about Nana. Kazuyo (Mary) Ohara was born on Galiano in 1929 in the Japanese fishing community located @ the North End of Galiano Island.
She attended school at the North End until her family moved to Salt Spring where she and her siblings attended Salt Spring Elementary School. Mary loved school and fully participated in all the social and academic aspects of school life. Then on December 07th, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and although Mary had never been in Japan and was a Canadian Citizen this international incident changed her whole life. Mary and her family were removed from Salt Spring Island, all their property confiscated, interned at Lemon Creek and after the war, sent to Japan. Mary Ohara never completed her education.
On November 14th Reed brought Mary to Galiano Community School where she gave a presentation about the Galiano Japanese fishing community and she told her story. This video is an excerpt from that presentation.
In Part 2 - Unbeknownst to Mary, our school community and the Galiano community was to celebrate Mary and the Gulf Island Board of Education presented her with an Honorary High School Diploma. Her whole family then walked into the Gym to be part of this special celebration.

Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Strait of Georgia and the Inside Passage, Vancouver Island is known as “the Hawaii of the North”. With its vast wilderness, picturesque peaks, and temperate climate, this stunning locale is a paradise for those seeking serenity, natural beauty, and charming coastal communities. Unlike much of Canada, Vancouver Island's weather is mild year-round. Spring comes early, with cherry blossom, tulip, and daffodil blooms lit by sparkling ocean sunsets. Summer is close behind, with the first sightings of migrating whales and local fishermen. In fall, a plethora of farms, vineyards, orchards, cideries, and breweries take local culinary culture to world-class levels. Come winter, cars loaded with kayaks, surfboards, paddle boards, skis, and snowboards come out to play, while golfers teeing off, and joggers taking to the trails remain common sights. Whatever the season, there’s plenty to enjoy on Vancouver Island.

I am also a High Carb Low Fat Vegan who practices Raw till 4 (rather raw till whenever). In the future I plan on talking about what it means to be a HCLF Vegan - but for now, just enjoy the show.

Wait for Spring by Michael Allen / Seth Holbrook
A song Mike and I started writing together back in 2008 that we never finished. He has since passed. I went ahead and did what I could to further it along a bit using midi drums and bass, but it was meant to be recorded by a real band.
I don't think anyone likes to post unfinished music, but due to his recent tragedy and Mike's fondness for this song and it's potential, I felt like I should go ahead and post it anyway. I feel very fortunate to have gotten the chance to collaborate with such a talented artist and such a great guy. Thanks Mike. - Seth

What is your drink of choice? Your beverage of choice tells a story about you. In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of IAmAlphaM, AaronMarino, and Pete & Pedro discusses whisky -- it's an acquired taste. But once you get it, delicious! Whisky is made from fermented grain mash and is broken down by region: American, Irish, Canadian, Scotch. And within each category, you have different brands.
Alpha discovered whisky after being a beer drinker. He also used to chew tobacco, and when he quit, he also quit alcohol. During this time, he discovered the show Mad Men which they were always drinking whisky. So he tried it-- by three tries, he started to really love it. You don't get bloated like with beer. It's sippable and enjoyable. Alpha now only drinks bourbon and scotch.
Whisky Drinking Like a Gent
1. Find your signature whisky
2. Know how to order your whisky whether neat / up, on the rocks, or added spring water
3. Know the age - the higher the age, the higher the quality.
Single vs blended whiskies - single is stronger, blended is milder. Alpha likes the single because of the bite.
4. Whisky is not just for special occasions. It's great when unwinding.
5. Drink responsibly!

Asking Simon
- Who are you?
I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats.
- Who is Champ?
Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza.
- What camera equipment do you use?
I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights.
- What are your vehicles?
I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years.
Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice.
From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran.
- What are your plans with the boat?
I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come!
- How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos?
To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent:
- How do you afford your lifestyle?
I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy.
I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects.
- How does your dog fit into this lifestyle?
It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities.
- How do you make it work as a digital nomad?
My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
