Titanic in Nova Scotia: Newsmagazines at the Nova Scotia Archives
During 2007, four separate issues of two British newsmagazines from April and May 1912 were donated to the Nova Scotia Archives by private individuals.
The donors understood the tremendous informational value of the Titanic-related material presented in these magazines, and knew that their availability at the archives would generate considerable public interest.
The archives has presented these magazines, in digitized format, for researchers to explore maps, diagrams, photographs and extensive articles covering one of the landmark events of the early 20th century.

Super rare Nova Scotia Archives footage of Halifax NS, from the 1940s 1950s and 1960s
V.E. Day Riots in Halifax, Nova Scotia (1945)
Footage shot during the V.E. Day Riots in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in May 1945.
The Halifax VE-Day riots in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia began as a celebration of the World War II Victory in Europe. This rapidly declined into a rampage by several thousand servicemen, merchant seamen and civilians, who looted the City of Halifax.
The long-expected allied victory in Europe was declared on 8 May 1945. Focusing on the need for thoughtful celebrations to commemorate the great sacrifices of the last six years, civic and military authorities in Halifax were caught by surprise when it rapidly became apparent that a substantial number of residents had other ideas.
Spearheaded by thousands of naval ratings, the centre of Halifax succumbed to twenty-four hours of mob rule and looting.
By and large, the ratings focused on booze and the civilians on shoes and clothing. Although there were three deaths, some definite nastiness and much wanton destruction, by the standards of later years only the downtown merchants and the provincial Liquor Commission seem not to have had what generally passed for 'a good time'. The damage, however, was immense — both economic and political.
