Surf Fishing Puerto Vallarta, Mexico November 2018
***Full report available at
This November my wife Lauren and I are staying in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where I will be working and surf fishing the beach. In this video we are surf fishing the Playa Los Muertos area of Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta, for jack crevalles (which are called yellow tails by the locals).
One major benefit of the internet is that it allows me to carryon my day-to-day business activities from anywhere in the world without issue. In fact I sometimes find it easier to work abroad than at home, and my productivity will oftentimes increase. For the next couple of weeks I will be blogging from Mexico, where it is currently 80 degrees, sunny and flat calm.

Fishing in Nuevo Vallarta, off the beach, Riviera Nayarit, Mexico
Fishing off the beach can be very very fun. You don't know what you'll catch next. Snapper, blowfish (fubu), catfish, jack crevalle, and many more. Some people might have a funny idea as to why we fish the way we do. Believe me you don't need a fishing pole for this size of fish.
Rock Fishing From Shore In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, there is a 100 yard rock outcropping from which I can cast poppers into depths of more than 30 feet of turqoise water.
Being able to cast lures into water that deep is a really unique opportunity. For example on Cape Cod, most of the time when fishing from shore I casting lures into less than 10 feet of water.
There is no telling what species of fish one might encounter when fishing a spot surrounded by such deep water! In fact we caught mani while fishing in a boat not far offshore at all from where this rocky outcropping is located.
I discovered the rocky outcropping a few days ago, and I feel it holds great potential. The video below was filmed during my first trip at this spot. I am casting a TA Bomb Popper when a hard fighting jack crevalle smashes it right on the surface!
Timestamps:
0:10 - walking out to the spot
3:25 - underwater footage of fish at similar rocky outcroppings

Puerto Vallarta fishing report January 2019
Lots of different smaller species so far this year the water has cooled down rapidly and the Blue and Black Marlin season is over. We are starting to catch alot of Roosterfish, and are still catching Dorado/Mahi Mahi inshore and offshore. Inshore We also catching alot of Jack Crevalle and Bigeye Trevally. Captain Cesar Perez and Team Marshell went to the 44th annual international fishing Tournament in Barra Navidad on the January 16th and

Puerto Vallarta 2019 Kayak fishing
Even when we go on a hotel beach holiday I make sure to take travel rods and a few lures. This year in Puerto Vallarta I went out on the hotels free kayaks for an hour or so a day. There were loads of small Bonito, Spanish and Cero mackerel which were so much fun to catch on very ligth tackle.
Shoulder-To-Shoulder Surf Fishing In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
For the full report please visit
My time in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico has been terrific and I definitely recommend it as a travel and fishing destination. The town has great culture, restaurants, adventure activities, and of course fishing!
I had a wonderful time in PV with my wife Lauren, her mom Carol and dad Steve. Now I am back home, thousands of miles from PV, but I have tons of great memories and experiences from the trip.
Today I have one more video which I'd like to share with you. Last week while fishing from shore in Puerto Vallarta, shoals of sardines were attacked in the surf by jack crevalles, red snappers, and sierra mackerels. It was an all-out blitz that produced shoulder-to-shoulder fishing conditions!
The scene was similar to the first blitz which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, but the action was even more intense. Plus we got an up close and personal look at a manta ray which was unintentionally hooked but safely released.
Timestamps:
0:01 - introduction
0:30 - sardine footage
1:16 - hooked up with red snapper!

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Trip 2018
We made tons of memories as a family on a fishing charter in the Spring of 2018 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!
Nuevo Vallarta Spring Break 2017
Fishing Jack Crevalle in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: Gypsy Travel
So, I won’t be keeping this short as there is so much to tell about this journey. Up until a few weeks ago I couldn’t even bring myself to think about the half terabyte of film I had stored on my external drives, in fact I couldn’t even think about the trip itself. Big awkwardness and some awful memories surrounding the 7 days in Puerto Vallarta with Danny Gomez, Arturo Lopez, Mike Crawford and Blake LaFleur. In a way this particular blog is therapeutic for me and probably should have been written a while ago. Some of you will remember me writing about an illness that I had come down with during the beginning of February. A festering, nagging chest cold that would not release its’ grip until mid March, roughly 2 weeks before my trip to PV. Because this strain of bullshit was playing me an extended remix from DJ Shutdown, I must’ve lost accuracy with my percentage scale from being down in the 40% range for so long, I definitely needed to recalibrate. Upon departure I felt like 90%, this was actually a false reading as I was really in the 60’s, maybe lower….
As you will see in the pictures here and video @fishgypsy, the first day was amazing. A Jack Crevalle warm-up beat-down, preparing for the next 6 days of Jack Crevalle main-event beat down. This species of reef dwelling thugs are scoffed at in many places in their range, but this aptly named “Mexican GT” is an absolute riot to fish for. Angry mobs of Jacks numbering in the thousands form mosh pits while trashing their forage in a well planned assault. This display is something that has to be seen in person, the relationship between predator and prey, the life and death struggle that happens all around you over and over again, naturally. But, I think these gangsters like being caught on artificial lures just so they can attempt escape. After all, only the notorious criminals worth remembering elude incarceration by fighting their way out of captivity, right? Normally the ideal cast is placed in front of the rioting mob, ahead of their direction of travel, but this was tried numerous times with no hookups. Previous experience reminded us that casting to “The Middle” is a no no. This disruption definitely turns the school downward, those of us from freshwater know this isn’t particularly a good thing. Early in the morning during the first casting session I decided to go to the middle. Part frustration, part curiosity, but mainly because Blake’s verbal assault from the back of the boat was getting downright savage. Goal: Snag one and shut him down. The next school I saw, I put that Purple Tuna Jack Fin directly in the epicenter. Even before it contacted the water the mob was spazzing out, as soon as it hit the water I twitched hard while reeling it quickly away, this resulted in what would be the trigger for several hours of hookups. After seeing this develop into pattern I realized that the bites were coming from fish far below the surface, that this commotion of fish fleeing the scene above created a sort of false feeding frenzy and raised fish up that assumed my lure was the remnants of the buffet. Later in the day the bite became more classic Jack Crevalle, chasing to the boat and taking lures at your feet, coming from nowhere to eat a blind casted 5 of Diamonds and taking every opportunity to bust your tackle.
I’ve always wanted to do this.
“To be continued….”
