In this travel vlog we visit a secret medieval castle in a small village in Somerset called Nunney. Best of all, it was free! Then we found out another castle was closed and ended up at Sham castle looking over the city of Bath. This was the worst castle we have been to and we do not recommend it but there are plenty of castles to see and things to do in England.

Nunney Castle, England By Drone
Nunney Castle is a medieval castle at Nunney in the English county of Somerset. Built in the late 14th century by Sir John Delamare on the profits of his involvement in the Hundred Years War, the moated castle's architectural style, possibly influenced by the design of French castles, has provoked considerable academic debate. Remodelled during the late 16th century, Nunney Castle was damaged during the English Civil War and is now ruined.
A Castle at Night - 5029 'Nunney Castle' runs to Didcot - 22/04/14
As a last minute decision, I went out to see 5029 'Nunney Castle' on the Great Western Mainline. The Castle ran a late night test run with two mk1 coaches from Southall to Didcot and back, just to check she's in tip top condition ready to haul day two of the 'Great Britain VII' with 34046 'Braunton'. For this I decided to head to Cholsey, this didn't necessarily go well. I had set up on platform 4 expecting her to come past on the slow....she didn't, I'll say no more. I was going to stay at Cholsey for the return run, but after the first attempt I was feeling a little paranoid about what line she'd come through on. So I went off to Didcot instead, where we catch Nunney at rest before moving off to be turned on the triangle. After turning she'll rolls back up through platform 4, we then see her backing onto her two coaches. After moving up to the signal she was soon on her way again back to Southall, with the glow from her firebox reflecting off her steam signing off the video quite nicely.
Not a terrific video I must admit, as I hadn't really prepared any of the stuff for Didcot. Also, apologies for the way the lighting is reflected in some shots. Whilst at Cholsey I decided to give my lens a clean with my sleeve, (all I had to do so) only instead of cleaning it properly it gave it a sort of haze.....oops.

5029 Nunney Castle THE GREAT BRITAIN 1V 22/04/2011
On a glorious April day Ex GWR Castle 5029 Nunney Castle worked the 7th Day leg of The Great Britain 1V from Preston to Bristol Temple Meads in the capable hands of West Coast Railways Driver Ray Poole. In this video I've also included some diesel locos on various interesting duties. Firstly we see 66250 working the 6V75 Dee Marsh to Margam , followed by WCR's 47760 which was the support loco for the Steam hauled special on the 0Z51 Carnforth to Bristol Temple Meads.
5029 Nunney Castle then follows with 11 coaches in tow making a steady climb up the 1:100 gradient of Llanfihangel Bank, with Driver Poole taking it easy due to the fire risk currently in force.
The special is the seen taking water at Magor on the South Wales Main Line, between Newport and Severn Tunnel Jnc.
Finally, a little further East we see DBS liveried 59206 heading a Newport AD Jnc to Westbury working on the up main, soon followed by a refreshed 5029 starting the final part of the journey to Bristol Temple Meads
Season 2, Episode 162 - The Great Britain IV and 5029 Nunney Castle (22/04/2011)
Last year, I managed to get this leg in reverse when it was 44871 and 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' but now I get it going the other way as the seventh day of The Great Britain IV brings Nunney Castle to Crewe for it's season debut run
We see her first arriving six minutes early into Crewe from Preston and then simmering in the sunshine with Virgin, London Midland, DRS and National Express East Anglia all looking at the girls on the footplate (not the drivers, see the photos I got an you'll understand ;))
We then see her departing bang on time with 390004 Alstom Pendolino getting in on the action as she heads down the line to Bristol Temple Meads via Shrewsbury and Hereford
This should have been originally 6100 Royal Scot but then got changed to 6024 King Edward 1st but guaging issues but her out and brought in Nunney Castle

The Great Britain III with Nunney Castle 06-04-10
This train, the first leg of the 2010 The Great Britain railtour, was originally billed as running from Victoria to Bristol via Salisbury however, as so often happens, circumstances forced a route change and it became just another Paddington - Bristol via Swindon. That said, it was still a chance to enjoy a Castle on the main line so it was off to two locations either side of the water stop at Challow, firstly at Grove near Wantage and then the B4000 road bridge near Shrivenham.

A glorious start to the bank holiday weekend with a walk along the River Weaver to see steam locomotive Nunney Castle cross the Dutton Viaduct.

Nunney Castle
The striking and picturesque moated castle of Nunney was built in the 1370s by Sir John de la Mere, a local knight who was beginning to enjoy royal favour. Extensively modernised in the late 16th century, the castle was held for the King during the Civil War, but quickly fell to Parliamentarian cannon in 1645: not until Christmas Day 1910, however, did the gun-damaged portion of the wall finally collapse.
A half decent day in October, Located in Frome Somerset, Nunney Castle. Set in the middle of a village, quietly tucked away from everything. A gorgeous castle, with FREE admission.

Clips are of the arrival, some movements and the departure from Plymouth.

5029 Nunney Castle and the Great Britain IV 24-04-11
Sunday 24th April, the last day of the Great Britain IV. This fourth annual, marathon, round Britain rail tour ended with 5029 Nunney Castle bringing the train from Bristol to Paddington.
A dash down the M4 to Swindon, and then across country via Marlborough and Devizes, brought us to a bridge at Great Cheverell, less than ten minutes before train time.
While the Castle took water at Woodborough, we moved ahead to Crofton. Quite a crowd had gathered at Grafton Curve as we passed, but we had already decided to head for the canal side below the pumping station. Eventually, 5029 could be heard, way off in the distance, storming Savernake and everyone got ready. A period of silence followed before the loco could be heard again, this time closer, then more silence. Finally, smoke could be seen drifting and Nunney Castle appeared around the bend, moving very slowly. It would appear that there is a clearance issue with the road bridge on the curve because once clear of the bridge 5029 opened up and blasted away towards Newbury. This was bad news for all those who had set up before the bridge, a bonus for those who were beyond it.
At Twyford the tables were turned. It was good news for anyone who has taken a chance on the up fast line and tough luck for those of us who had expected the train to be on the slow. Fortunately there was enough of a view over the fence that we didn't totally miss out.
After arrival at Paddington, the class 47, that had been attached at Reading, took the empty stock out to Greenford, from where 5029 took it to Hayes before the 47 returned it to Southall yard. It's during Nunney Castle's part in this complicated manoeuvre that we see the train leave the Greenford branch and pass through Hanwell.
Finally, having left the train at Southall, loco and support coach pass through Iver on their way back to Tyseley.
5029 Nunney Castle, The Great Britain III, 6th April 2010
GWR Castle Class 5029, Nunney Castle, pulls the Railway Touring Company's Great Britain III on its first day, 6th April. Today's leg is from Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads. We see the train speeding through Slough, accelerating at Sonning Cutting after slowing for Twyford, and having its water stop at Challow. The Great Britain III is a 9 day steam tour of England and Scotland, arriving back in London on the 14th. It is the third year the train has run, hence its name.
At the end of the video I have added a short bit of footage from Mortimer Station of Vintage Trains' The Moonraker, hauled by Nunney Castle's sister engine 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe from Solihull to Salisbury and back on 3rd April.

Nunney Village Somerset England.
Nunney is a village and civil parish near Frome in the Mendip local government district within the English county of Somerset. The parish includes the hamlet of Holwell.
The name of the village comes from Old English and means Nunna's island.
Today, the tourist attractions are the ruins of Nunney Castle, a historic church, and ducks wandering the streets near the river. The village hall is host to Nunney Acoustic Cafe which provides live music, homemade food, a bar and children's art activities on the second Sunday of each month (except July and August).
On 30 September 2007, Nunney was the subject of a BBC Radio 4 report, asking whether the prettiest village in England is a place where we can learn how to mend our broken society.
Evidence of Roman settlement has been provided by the discovery of a hoard of Roman coins in 1869 at Westdown Farm and a villa with a mosaic floor.
Nunney is mentioned as a manor belonging to William de Moyon in the Domesday Book in 1086, but the book does not mention a castle.
The parish was part of the hundred of Frome.
For many years, from the medieval period until the 19th century, Nunney was the site of water-powered mills owned initially by the Hoddinotts and then by James Fussell.

5029 Nunney Castle Hauls The Great Britain III Past Twerton Tunnel 06/04/2010
Location for todays shot is the scenic Twerton Tunnel, Situated just outside Bath. The railtour on the calander for today was The Great Britain III which was hauled by the Great Western Railway locomotive 5029 Nunney Castle. On the rear of the train was WCRC 47760.
