It is really encouraging and also touching, the fact that many tourists come to Greece thinking: 'We want to go to Greece, we want to support this beautiful country and its citizens who are having a hard time'.

15. SOUNDBITE: (Greek) Anna Anifanti, Director, Hellenic Association of Travel and tourism Agencies (HATTA):
It is not pleasant for Greek tourism that during the peak period we have protests and strikes, and, I would add, including some actions which are not the most acceptable ones. We understand when a social group, a professional one, has requests. This is normal and it's happening all over the world.

STORYLINE:
An ongoing strike by Greek taxi drivers disrupted the travel plans of some tourists in Athens on Thursday.
The industrial action, which started on Monday, is against planned reforms to open up the profession to more competition.
With taxis off the road, many visitors have struggled in searing summer temperatures to reach Athens historic landmarks.
It was hard yesterday because we wanted to go to the Acropolis, and it is half an hour walk from where we live. Today we took the subway and it worked, but it's harder, said Swedish tourist, Linnea Utterheim.
Despite a wave of discontent around the country because of Greece's 14-month old austerity programme, tourist numbers appear to be on the rise.
Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (HATTA) Director, Anna Anifanti, said on Thursday the number of visitors in 2011 is up ten percent, compared to the same time in the last two summer seasons.
Striking taxi drivers staged a number of demonstrations across the country on Thursday.
At a toll station in Afidnes on the highway between Athens and Thessaloniki, several lanes were blocked by a sea of yellow cabs.
Greek authorities said striking taxi drivers were also disrupting cruise ship arrivals at two major resort islands and blocking highways during the peak of the vital tourist season.
A harbour police statement said about 50 taxi drivers are preventing more than 800 passengers from three cruise ships from boarding tour coaches on the northwestern island of Corfu.
A fourth cruise ship carrying 2,400 passengers was due at Corfu later on Thursday.

Darcie's Vlogs #5: Weekend in Athens!
Last week, I found a round trip flight to Athens for only $40! So, I bought a last-minute ticket and was on my way.
Fun story that I didn't explain in the video: The taxi's in Rome were on strike ALL weekend! Getting to and from the airport on Friday and Sunday made each day a very long day of just travel. Aside that, I had an incredible time in Athens.
I tried so many new foods! My favorite was the Sfakia pie and the pita bread! It does not compare to any other pita bread I've ever tried.
Standing at the Acropolis literally made me feel on top of the world. I would have never thought I'd be able to visit Greece at my age.

Greek Ruins, Froyo, Food and Fun in Athens
We took the train from Meteora to Athens, finally arrived at the Herodion Hotel which is located right by the Acropolis. I was hungry but tired since it was about 10pm and decided to just get some sleep so I could get up early to see the Acropolis before the crowds. Luckily the hotel was nice enough to leave a fruit basket so I had a healthy snack then went to sleep.
It was only a 10 minute walk to the entrance of the Acropolis, I arrived before the ticket office opened, was one of the first one in. It was so nice to not have huge crowds and people in all of my shots, I highly recommend to get there before they open and before the tour buses arrive.
I went back to the Herodion for a tour of the hotel, we went up to the rooftop deck which had the best view. The Acropolis is right there, plus there two hot tubs where you can relax and just see the great view. Such a nice hotel, great service, excellent food, the best location!
Next I went to the Roman Agora which was a 20 minute walk, don't even try to take a taxi, the roads were gridlocked from all of the tour buses around the Acropolis. It was much faster to walk. I met up with Julia, you might recognize her from Meteora, she was on our tour the first day. We checked out the Agora, got some of the best froyo I've ever had, she got a free coconut, some old guy before her just paid for hers! Then we took the tram to the marina, found a beach, relaxed a bit then I had to head back to the Herodion for lunch.
We had a great hosted lunch at the Atrium Greek Bistrot in the Herodion Hotel. Everything was so good and the service was perfect. I can't get enough of those salads, and I don't eat salad too often. The beef was excellent as well, so good!
After lunch we had a tour around Athens with Taxi Transfer Athens, he took us around the coast and to the Temple of Poseidon for sunset. We had a really nice sunset there, it's about an hour from Athens but worth the drive. Then we went to L'amico for the best dinner of our stay in Greece. They brought dish after dish, never ending deliciousness, when we were totally full, more dishes came, it was just incredible. Then dessert, that cheesecake in a sundae cup was my favorite!
What a long and fun day, we packed in quite a bit, and had so much good food. But now it was time to get back to the hotel, get some sleep and set off on our island cruise the next morning.
