Oberalp Pass (Romansh: Alpsu or Cuolm d'Ursera, German: Oberalppass) (el. 2044 m.) is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting the cantons of Graubünden and Uri between Disentis and Andermatt.
WINTER CLOSURE
The public road that crosses the pass is closed in winter, but the Furka-Oberalp railway line, now part of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, runs year round and provides a limited shuttle for cars in winter (reservation required). When the road closes depends on snowfall and varies between the end of October and the beginning of December. The road opens again in spring, usually by the end of April but sometimes not until mid May.
In winter, a ski area extends to the Graubünden side, connecting the pass well into the Tujetsch territory to Dieni, near Rueras.
SOURCE of the RHINE RIVER
The Rhine springs from a source nearby (Tomasee), which can be accessed by hiking two hours from Oberalp Pass. A multiday trekking route is signposted across Oberalp pass and along the young Rhine called Senda Sursilvana.
Oberalpsee is located 20 m below, in the direction of Andermatt.
RAILWAY STATION
Oberalppass railway station is located next to the Oberalppass road. It is at the base of the Oberalp ski area. The station is owned and run by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. It has 3 platforms, one of which is a bay platform from Andermatt, and is often closed during the winter. The railway on both sides of the station is a single line, so Oberalppass is an important passing place.
Regional trains to Andermatt and Disentis/Mustér are operated hourly in each direction, with additional services to and from Andermatt at peak times during the ski season. The station also has several Glacier Express trains and, during the winter season when the adjacent road is closed, car shuttle trains passing through each day. The station has a waiting room. The station is the highest point on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn network.
SKI AREA
The Oberalp Pass passes the Oberalp ski area, which is part of the Gotthard Oberalp Arena.
There are currently plans for the ski area to be linked up with Nätschen, the neighbouring mountain, which is also part of the Gotthard Oberalp Arena.

The Oberalp Pass links Central Switzerland with Canton Graubunden. From Andermatt in Canton Uri, it's an 11 kilometre and 600-metre climb to the pass head at 2044 metres altitude. The route of the Glacier Express operated by the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway and Rhaetian Railway more or less follows the pass road. From the top, the pass snakes down to the tiny village of Tschamut in Canton Graubunden and then on to Sedrun. This film was taken on 11 May 2012, after a winter with heavy snowfall.

Andermatt to Furka Drive - Switzerland - Summer
Enjoy a relaxing drive through Switzerland.
We start in Andermatt and end the journey at the Rhone Glacier parking lot on the Furka Pass.
This was filmed in the Summer of August 2016. Such a great time of year for this drive. It was shot with a Gorpro mounted to a BMW 6 series convertible. The weather was perfect for a nice drive with the top down the whole time.
Play this while exercising or just sit back and enjoy the view. It work well for a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike. I slowed down the footage to make the pace a bit better for exercising.
A truely beautiful drive through the alps, and one of my favorite mountain passes.
This is also the road where the famous scene from Goldfinger was filmed.
The Furka Pass has an elevation of 2,429 m or 7,969 ft.
Here is a google map link to the route.
I have more drives from Europe that I am working on adding soon...

Furka Pass (French: le col de la Furka), with an elevation of 2,429 metres (7,969 ft), is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting Gletsch, Valais with Realp, Uri. The Furka Oberalp Bahn line through the Furka Tunnel bypasses the pass. The base tunnel opened in 1982 and replaced a tunnel at 2100 m.
The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. One curve on the east side of the pass is even named James Bond Strasse. One can park his car there and enjoy a great view over the Valley. Visitors can also park next to Hotel Belvédère, close to the summit, and take the short walk to the Rhone Glacier Ice Grotto. The glacier moves 30-40 metres each year, and the 100 m long tunnel and ice chamber can be visited from June when the road opens.

Oberalppass: Tujetsch ► Andermatt

Swiss Trains: Glacier Express route; Climb to Oberalp
A winter journey along the Glacier Express rail route, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn - Swiss Trains in the Snow!
31 December 2013. Travelling on Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) train R840. Departing Andermatt, 1327hrs to Disentis/Muster (arrival 1436hrs) with HGe 4/4 II #104.
Departing slightly late, this video highlights the steep climb from Andermatt at 1,346metres to Oberalppass at 2,033metres. The highest point on the Glacier Express route.
Andermatt Swiss Alps Development
Andermatt lies at the heart of the three major alpine passes of Switzerland: the Gotthard, the Furka and the Oberalp. Cast your mind back to the release of Goldfinger in 1964 and you should remember Connery chasing Auric Goldfinger’s Rolls Royce Phantom III up the Furka Pass in his DB5. To say the topography of the area is impressive is an understatement. At only one-and-a-half-hours from Zurich, one from Lucerne, two from Milan, and connections available via the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, such as Zermatt and St Moritz, Andermatt is in a prime location. If you’re looking to make headway into town in something slightly more private, the airfield of Buochs has a 2,000-metre runway just 60 kilometres from Andermatt.
