Teaser: The making of OdySea Aquarium by Cox7
Amram Knishinsky, PhD., CEO and founder of OdySea Aquarium says building an aquarium in the desert is a way for millions of people to experience the ocean if they can’t travel to it. Also, the Phoenix metropolitan area is the only large metropolitan area in the United States that does not have a large aquarium. The OdySea Aquarium is another component to the OdySea Entertainment District that started three years ago with Butterfly Wonderland, followed a year later with OdySea Mirror Maze. In addition to the aquarium restaurants and retail shops are being built.

Scottsdale is a desert city in Arizona east of state capital Phoenix. It's known for its spa resorts and golf courses, including TPC Scottsdale. Farther north, trails wind through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a desertscape of hills, rock formations and cacti. Nearby is Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s former home and studio. Downtown's Old Town Scottsdale has 1920s buildings and 19th-century olive trees.
Scottsdale is home to many galleries, high quality resorts, and golf courses. It is also one of the wealthier parts of the Phoenix Metro Area. High end shopping destinations are one of the primary attractions of the city. For example, the Fashion Square Mall is near downtown Scottsdale and is one of the biggest malls in the United States. The extensive galleries to the west of the downtown also offer upscale shopping and strolling. The galleries in this area display works both from local artists and from around the world.
The Old Town section of Scottsdale is to the east of the gallery district. It showcases swanky upscale style as well as a caricature of the gruff American West. Well over half the shops are gift shops. However, it is fun enough for a browse in a Disneyland sort of way.
Both Old Town and Downtown Scottsdale possess an dazing array of bars, nightclubs, pool clubs and chic eateries. Nicknamed the Beverly Hills of the Desert, Scottsdale is second to none in terms of opportunity for high-end debauchery.
The valley of the sun has over 130 miles of canals. Most of them were built in the last 100 years to provide water for the irrigation of farm land. However, now that the valley is much less agrarian the canals are primarily used to carry away storm water. Some are also used to generate hydroelectric power.
These often overlooked gems are open to the public. One can take in the beautiful desert scenery and fresh air while strolling along them. They provide walkers, joggers, and bikers with a nice refuge from traffic. But don't try swimming in the canals, aside from being an obvious bad idea because the sides are so steep it is also illegal, along with motorized vehicles.

Butterfly Wonderland Testimonials
We asked people of all ages what they thought about their experience at Butterfly Wonderland.
A Visit to Butterfly Wonderland
Today we celebrated the Thirteenth Day of Bobbi with a surprise road trip. Bright and early this morning, we headed out to a secret destination. She had no idea where we were going. About a half hour later, we pulled into the driveway of Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, Arizona, the largest butterfly atrium in the country. Besides having thousands of butterflies flying around a lush tropical garden, the facility holds several other activities and displays. We saw a 3D movie about the massive transcontinental migration of hundreds of millions of monarchs along their migratory routes from Canada, across the United States, to their remote overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico. Awesome!! They also have a wonderful Butterfly Emergence Gallery where you have the rare opportunity to witness one of nature's most amazing transformations - metamorphosis. Amazing!! They also have a Rivers of the Amazon Aquatic Life exhibit where you can pet stingrays and see a large assortment of Amazon fish.
Dolphinaris GM Grey Stafford: We don't care for people telling us what we can and can't do.
General Manager Dr. Grey Stafford, who previously referred to opponents of dolphin enslavement in the desert as racists, as spokesman for Dolphinaris tells the public that he and the company don't care what you think.
To any of the 100,000+ people who signed the petition in opposition to Dolphinaris and dolphins living their lives swimming in a desert puddle, if you live out of state remember that you in particular don't matter. In other words, take your tourist dollars elsewhere, perhaps to a state and tourist attraction that treats animals as the sentient beings they are, with compassion and respect.

Meet Ella, OdySea Aquarium's Rescued Sea Lion
FOX10 Phoenix stopped by to meet Ella, one of our rescued sea lions.
Ella was found on a California beach and with her umbilical cord still attached. It is believed that humans not respecting the mother's boundaries may have gotten to close to Ella and her mother, forcing the two to separate. She was very fragile, emaciated, and injured at the time of her rescue. The United States government deemed her non-releasable due to her condition. She found her way to a rescue facility where she was carefully nursed back to health by a dedicated group of Animal Care specialists, and is now thriving here at OdySea Aquarium. She celebrated her 8th birthday on June 16th, 2016!
Ella is an extremely fast learner and a very enthusiastic animal. Everything she does is with a great intensity. She finds learning new behaviors very reinforcing, and is extremely intelligence. This brainiac can also be a diva, however, and she prefers lots of attention from OdySea’s Animal Care Specialists. When she feels she’s gotten a raw deal, she’s not afraid to express her opinions via several different types of vocalizations. Ella teaches us as much, if not more, than we teach her on any given day, and is a testament to what building a strong relationship based on mutual trust and understanding is all about. We consider ourselves very lucky to have her as part of our family!
