Ogden Nature Center • COMMUNITY AWARENESS
Nestled just off of Ogden’s busy 12th Street is one of Northern Utah’s hidden treasures, the Ogden Nature Center. With over 152 acres of nature preserve the Ogden Nature Center has something for all ages.
“I think it’s really unique and special what we provide here. It’s like nowhere else,” said Brandi Bosworth, public relations and special projects coordinator for the Ogden Nature Center. “It’s science based, it’s outdoors and it’s fun. The kids don’t realize that they are learning so much but they are.”
The Ogden Nature Center has been in Ogden since 1975 and was one of the very first nature centers in the Western United States. The center is open year round to the public for discovery and exploration. Adventure awaits you whether you’re a first-timer or a return visitor.

Saving and Sharing the Pando Aspen Clone: Taking Advantage of Social Media Interest
Nancy Brunswick, Regional Landscape Architect, Intermountain Region, United States Forest Service, Ogden, Utah.
The Pando aspen clone is located in the Fish Lake Basin, on the Fremont River Ranger District of the Fishlake National Forest, in Sevier County, Utah. Pando is the largest and most massive aspen clone discovered to date. Pando’s massive size, weight, and age have caused world-wide fame, fueled by social media interest. As a result of both research that has been published, and social media posts, the Pando is visited and studied by many groups from all backgrounds from all over the world.
Currently Pando is suffering from a lack of regeneration and damage caused by insects, disease, and browse by wildlife. In its current state of decline, it is at risk of decreasing in clone size or complete die-off. The Forest Service is working in cooperation with partner organizations to gain an understanding for the decline and how Pando reacts to various treatments. Treatment areas, some fenced, were set up along with research plots to aid with this task. The fenced treatment area creates an amazing opportunity to educate forest visitors about the various ways to encourage aspen growth.
Even with the interest in Pando, there currently are no signs, and one locally produced brochure. A comedian from Chicago, IL contacted the Forest to share concerns that there wasn’t any information available on site about Pando. This led to a partnership where the comedian, Brad Einstein, and a film crew developed a social media campaign. They are working with local nonprofit organizations, the Fishlake National Forest and Aspen conservation organizations to share information and raise funds to support interpretation and further conservation initiatives. There is a need to provide interpretive exhibits and identity signs at the site to notify visitors of Pando’s location and interpret the resource. Phased planning and development of interpretive materials will provide accurate information to the public so they can enjoy their visit with Pando, gain a better understanding of its uniqueness, and understand why ongoing studies of Pando are necessary.
This presentation will demonstrate examples of the benefits of using creative social media outreach and partnerships to share conservation strategies with the visitors to the Fishlake Basin and foster stewardship to help expand monitoring and conservation of the Pando Clone.
Nancy Brunswick is the Regional Landscape Architect for the Intermountain Region of the US Forest Service. Prior to her current position, she was the recreation program manager on the Cibola National Forest in New Mexico, a byway specialist with the America’s Byways Resource Center in a partnership position with FHWA and a landscape architect on the Dixie National Forest.
She was a contributing author for “Scenic Byways: A Design Guide for Roadside Improvements”, which received an award from the National Association for Interpretation. While working with the Resource Center, she was the project manager and a contributing author for “Conserving Our Treasured Places: Managing Visual Quality on Scenic Byways.”
Nancy received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah and a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Utah State University.

Amidst one of the most well to do cities in America is a declining corridor that needs revitalization and reinvestment. The otherwise booming town of Naperville has been cited with these awards over the years:
#1 Wealth center of the Midwest
#11 Wealth center in the Nation
#13 Highest income in the Nation
#2 Best Places to Live in America
#1 Best Places to Retire
Lets put that wealth into bringing back the city that we love.
City Council elections take place April 7, 2015.

Camp LIA: Summer Adventure in Moab
Sixteen urban Latino high school students from Utah kicked off their summer vacation with an unforgettable Take It Outside! weekend adventure on the Colorado River near Moab.
The students slept out under the stars, braved high water runoff, and crushed Class I-II rapids on an overnight river raft trip provided by BLM-Utah, in partnership with Latinos In Action (LIA) and O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.
Mentors from LIA, the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks shared their insights about education paths and careers in natural resources. The O.A.R.S. river guides demonstrated the value of respecting the environment, looking out for each other, and how to take care of themselves outdoors. Five students from Logan High School were honored with internships to participate as peer leaders.
The students—many of whom had never been camping before-- became fast friends as they shared an action-packed, multi-day outdoor experience. The participants camped and hiked on public lands managed by the BLM-Utah's Moab Field Office; exploring red rock canyons, discovering desert wildlife, and even studying dinosaur tracks.
The learning and fun will continue throughout the summer with Camp LIA day trips to recreation areas in northern Utah, thanks to a partnership with outdoor leadership school Splore. Recreational opportunities include paddle boarding and rock climbing.
All this comes about from cooperation among a team of incredible partners: Latinos In Action; O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.; Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks; National Park Service, Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program; The Outdoor Foundation; Utah State University; US Forest Service Uintah-Wasatch-Cache; Bureau of Reclamation Upper Colorado Region, and Splore.

Union Station - Ogden, UT
We took a morning trip up north to Ogden, Utah. While we were there, our family visited Union Station–a once a very busy train station built in 1889. It was the junction for the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads. Today it offers a glance into the past as you visit the four different museums: John M. Browning Firearms Museum, Browning-Kimball Classic Car Museum, Utah State Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and Utah State Railroad Museum. Our little group had fun exploring and learning more about an important part to our state history.
