Ojai Olive Oil - An Introduction
Ojai Olive Oil - an introduction to who we are and what we do, by master miller Philip Asquith.
Our organic, permaculture farm is located in southern California's beautiful Ojai Valley, and is family owned and operated. Producing the very best extra virgin olive oil is our passion. Some of our trees are as much as 150 years old, and our groves include varietals not found anywhere else in California. We do everything by hand, including our harvesting and bottling. Our extra virgin olive oils are among the most awarded and recognized in the world. We were honored as the #1 olive oil company in the United States in 2014, receiving top honors from both the California Olive Oil Council and the New York International Olive Oil Competition.

Conscious Activist #4 - Counterfeit Olive Oil in Every Home
Aloha Sangha!
Today I'm coming to you with an investigative report regarding counterfeit EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL. I had an experience last week using olive oil to make some salad dressing that got my attention. During the process of making the dressing I noticed that the olive oil didn't smell or taste anything like olive oil.
Immediately I wondered to myself... could it be possible that this olive oil isn't in fact olive oil?
After asking myself that question I decided that I was going to do some research and find out if anyone else had noticed this odd tasting mystery oil which was obviously not pure extra virgin olive oil.
I was surprised and delighted to find plenty of information on the internet but at the same time it was a bit discouraging because the majority of the reports that I found confirmed my suspicions. As it turns out Sangha, the majority of imported olive oil from the likes of Italy, Spain, Greece, etc, are counterfeit.
When I say counterfeit what that means is 69% of the imported olive oils that come into California (and probably the rest of the country) do not meet the standards set in place by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and IOC (International Olive Council).
The USDA and IOC have set in place a number of criteria for olive oils to be labeled EXTRA VIRGIN be they domestic or imported the criteria are the same.
I found a very detailed report online in the form of a .pdf file by UC Davis Olive Oil Chemistry Laboratory in collaboration with the Australian Oils Research Laboratory. The findings that these institutions have found with regard to the quality and content of extra virgin olive oil are sure to make you ask yourself the question as I did... how the heck does something like this happen?
Either the olive oils are extremely old, oxidized and have been sitting out too long, they were made with below standard low-quality olives or worst case the oils have been cut with other oils like peanut oil, soy oil or canola oil for example.
I invite you all to read the report it is now available on the Raw Sangha website please click the following link to download the .pdf file.
Once your read the facts for yourself please be sure to pass on this information. Tell you're friends, family and co-workers about it, chances are they have this counterfeit olive oil already in their home.
The solution is to buy local California based company olive oils. Even if you live in another part of the country if you buy olive oils produced in California you have a 90% chance it actually meets the standard set by the USDA to be labeled EXTRA VIRGIN.
Again this is another example how if we buy locally it's more sustainable and helps to support our local economy.
Okay that's it for today, please remember to read the .pdf file and pass on this information... be active and help spread the info throughout your communities. If we can get people aware and awake then maybe they'll stop buying these counterfeit products and the stores will stop carrying them.
Thank you for tuning in to Raw Sangha.
Namaste,
-BE :-)
United States Specials: Episode Two - Olives and Roads (October 3, 2016)
On a Rosh Hashanah holiday, Griffin travels with his parents and grandparents to the Ojai Valley, near Santa Barbara, in California. Per June's request, they visit an olive oil farm and try some olive oil (and some uncured olives.) After driving around the Ojai area for the day, they go back home using the Pacific Coast Highway.
Farm Fresh: Olive Oil
Rich and fresh olive oil from Californina's Central Coast is available at several certified Farmers' Markets—including the Templeton's Saturday morning market held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m
We recently spoke with Pablo and Paula Sanchez, about olive oil tasting, cooking, and other aspects of the special varieties they grow and bottle.
California grows more than 95 percent of the olives grown in the United States, according to the California Olive Committee. Harvest season runs roughly from September through November, with the majority of trees growing in warmer inland valleys like the San Joaquin.
Harvesting is done by hand with olives being stripped from each branch. As many as 1,000 olives can be on each tree.

With two full bars,Three large dining rooms, front and back patio dining, and a focus on house produced craft foods, local meat and produce, local wine and beer, and craft cocktails, Azu has become the most elite restaurant in Ojai, and a return destination for the local community as well as Ojai visitors.
With a restaurant capacity of 120, this large beautiful, art filled space, is also the number one venue in Ojai for high end rehearsal dinners and private events.
Laurel and Elizabeth are constantly building to utilize the natural bounty of Ojai, and continuously grow the level of excellence Azu has achieved, while preserving an anchor for this growing food forward community.

How to Remove an Olive Tree

How to Remove an Olive Tree. There are many varieties of olive trees, but most of them only grow in areas of the U.S. that have long, dry seasons of hot weather such as California and Arizona. The Russian variety of olive tree can exist in other states because it tolerates more moisture. Removing olive trees consists of mechanical and chemical...
