Orange Grove to Upper River Loop Trail Review - Ventura River Preserve - Ojai, CA
The Ventura River Preserve is a nearly 1600 acre parcel of land maintained by the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy. We started our hike intending to to the Wills-Rice Loop however the Thomas Fire burned the bridge making it inaccessible. So we changed gears and decided to hike the Orange Grove Trail to the Upper River Loop.
For our first trip to the Ventura River Preserve the Upper River Loop was perfect. For a hot early summer day walking along the river offered plenty of drinking opportunities for Bean and kept us cool. Despite wondering off and losing the trail we enjoyed this trail and would recommend it to everyone.

Rice Creek Restoration Time Lapse
In October 2013, the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy, along with our team of engineers and contractors, freed Rice Creek from an artificially created diversion ditch and back into its historic native route. The project healed a severed hydrologic connection between Rice Creek and the Ventura River. The project re-wetted ¾ of a mile of historic creek channel and will result in about 10 acres of new stream habitat. In the 1920's Rice Creek was simply removed to make room for an orange orchard. Rice Creek is back! Along the historic route, over 10,000 new native trees and shrubs have been added to restore riparian habitats. We are now just waiting for rain so we can see Rice Creek flow free for the first time in 85 years!
Visiting the Krishnamurti Foundation + Library in Ojai, California
Looking back, it's almost like the book Total Freedom was a pre-requisite for this relationship. Barry read it before he met Sydney, and recommended Sydney read it when she got bit by the skydiving bug.
Total Freedom is one of many of Jiddhu Krishnamurti's works and it has shaped how both of us move through the world, see our surroundings, and has really changed our lives. When we were in Ventura and realized how close we were to Ojai, we decided to take the morning and afternoon to wander the grounds, read some of Krishnamurti's work at the library (his former home), and have some incredible conversations with the people who find themselves there.
Most notably, we met a man named Troy after we did our initial lap around the property. If you have a chance to visit the Foundation and see the paintings in the main building, most of them have been loaned to the organization by Troy. He's not native to the area, but when he and his wife landed in Ojai, he started coming to the Foundation property to paint different aspects of the land at different times during the year.
Let's just say our conversation with Troy was one of the most enlightened conversations we've ever had with a total stranger, and was exactly the confirmation we needed at exactly the right time.
This doesn't even begin to cover the significance that Krishnamurti's work has had on Barry's life in particular, but you can see it in his face at the beginning of the video - this man isn't in awe often, but that day he was.
I'd go back there every day just to see that look on his face!
Rice Creek Flow
Here is the video of the first flow down the restored Rice Creek route. Actually seeing this was pretty surreal after all the years it took to come to that moment.

BONUS: Ojai Yoga Class at Meditation Mount
Greetings rainbow warriors,
Today I’m coming from you from Morocco, with a heavy heart. Over the last week I’ve watched a nightmare unfold. My sweet home town of Ojai ,California just north of Los Angeles, has been burning. California wildfires are raging through the state, and sadly this sweet little idyllic valley also fell victim to them. Ojai is the sacred valley of the moon, named by the Chumash tribe that first inhabited it. It’s a small and tight knit spiritual town where I built a yoga community atop a mountain that overlooked the entire valley, in a center called Meditation Mount. This has been my family and community for years, which supported me and gave me the trust to lead them in yoga. This community made me the teacher I am today. I am forever grateful to those who believed in me, and my students who attended classes week after week, deepening their own practice, and unbeknownst to them also filling my heart with so much gratitude as they allowed me to share the sacred gift of yoga with them, creating such a fulfuling livlihood for me.
So this last week, The entire city was forced to evacuate. Many friends lost their homes, and that center I spoke of, Meditation Mount, had the fires ravage the land and gardens. Though some of the structures still remain, and we expect in Divine timing, the center will reopen to once again serve as a peaceful place for people to gather and meditate daily in service to humanity as they’ve been doing there for over 40 years..
My heart has been engaged in the news non stop as the horror has unfolded. Almost everyone is still displaced as the air is too toxic to breathe there right now.I humbly ask you to send your prayers and good thoughts to this very special communiyt of activated souls, so many tru Rainbow Warriors there. The local organic grocery store is even names Rainbow Bridge guys, if that give you any idea.
The fire maps show that eventually the fires made it 100% completely around the town which is a long narrow valley and could have easily been swallowed whole by the giant flames. Thanks to the tireless work of the thousands of hero firefighters, and a few miracles resulting from lots of collective prayer, the main town did not burn. It’s really nothing short of a miracle.
So, today I’m called to share with you, a recording of one of my yoga classes at our beloved Meditation Mount. As you listen, envision a mountain top glass enclosed sanctuary with a massive skylight leading up to the heavens, with views of exquisite gardens, majestic mountains, and our magical valley below. It has been a true honor to be a part of this community, and I and many are holding space for a phoenix from the ashes story for Meditation Mount, and the town as a whole.
You can visit my Visionary LIfestyle and Podcast facebook page to see a video I shared, to help the fire victims strengthen their root chakras, which are undoubtedly out of balance at this traumatic time. The root chakra is what makes us feel safe a and secure in the world, and when our homes , live or livlihoods are threatened a lot of instability ca result. That video can be helpful to anyway concerned about their physical survival. Please check it out and share it with anyone affected by the fires.
I hope you enjoy the class. I look forward to hearing your feedback. I’m always happy to hear from you guys. You can contact me through my facebook page or website any time visionary-lifestyle.com.
This one’s for you my Ojai tribe. We are the rainbow bridge that connects heaven and earth, eternity with the now. Namaste
The Pines Camp Ojai
Now we have hiked to all four foothill camps above Ojai! It was a goal of mine. xD I Dood It!
The Pines Camp is just lovely. I was surprised there was water. The chairs were amazing and the place was so quite. The switchbacks are murder to the knees and the steps are not as helpful as one may think. Another hike for a walking stick. :) Good stretch of the legs.

Wildlife in Ventura County - Los Padres National Forest
30% OF VENTURA COUNTY IS FACING PROHIBITIVE AND DANGEROUS REGULATIONS –
THE VENTURA COUNTY WILDLIFE CORRIDOR AND ITS IMPACT – MORE THAN PUBLIC LANDS
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors advised the Planning Division to study potential new restrictions and regulations covering 420,000 acres, approximately 30% of Ventura County. This includes 164,000 acres of both public and private property that cuts through the heart of Ventura County.
Ventura County County Board of Supervisors is moving fast. They are pushing to implement the Wildlife Corridor zoning ordinance and its related land use restrictions and regulations in March of 2019.
NEW REGULATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS WILL DEVASTATE LOCAL FAMILIES AND FARMS AND RESTRICT PUBLIC USE
The Ventura County Supervisors plan to create a Habitat Connectivity Wildlife Corridor Overlay Zone which imposes a myriad of new regulations and restrictions for landowners. Within that zone they would identify additional overlay areas and title them “Critical Wildlife Passage Areas” that includes even more restrictions. Essentially Ventura County properties could be subject to 3 sets of zoning regulations:
• The base set of zoning regulations depending on category for example, residential, commercial, rural, agricultural
• The Habitat Connectivity and Wildlife Movement Corridor zone
• The Critical Wildlife Passage Areas
The impact of this on landowners and the community will be devastating.
The new restrictions and regulations on both public and private property encompass:
• Fencing, installation or replacement
• Lighting, installation or replacement including removal of existing lighting no longer permitted under the conditions of the new ordinance. Other lighting restrictions will be enforced including height, direction, color and hours
• Eliminating non-native invasive plants
• Restricting vegetation removal, including fire prevention and mitigation measures
• Designation of wildlife passage areas across farmland with no scientific studies
• Building of new structures and fencing on properties in the Wildlife Passage Areas would require environmental analysis or setting aside half of the land to revert to its natural state for wildlife habitat
• Awarding the Planning Director the discretionary power to control (and even deny) every aspect of basic property improvements that are not specifically exempt from the ordinance
• Requiring land owners to undergo a full environmental analysis of projects including, houses, barns, lighting and fences before approval
• Expanding the size of “surface water area buffer zones” rendering many properties virtually unusable
• Conditional Use Permits will be in jeopardy of non-renewal once they expire
• Preventing land owners from making improvements or rebuilding property like fencing, barns and homes if damaged by fire or other natural disasters
THREAT OF INCREASED WILDFIRES IMPACTS PUBLIC SAFETY
New restrictive regulations preventing landowners from conducting fire prevention measures will increase the already dangerous threat of devastating wildfires.
WILDLIFE ALREADY TRAVELS THROUGH MANY AREAS OF VENTURA COUNTY
It is important to note that the original Wildlife Corridor zoning proposal was designed to maintain existing wildlife passage points, not to create new ones.
NO COMPENSATION TO LAND OWNERS
Essentially the Wildlife Corridor ordinance is a conservation easement with no compensation to land owners. It does not provide any allowances for the individual needs of families who own and pay taxes on Ventura County properties.
YOUR VOICES NEED TO BE HEARD – ATTEND THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING
If you are concerned about this proposed Wildlife Corridor, the changes that will be made to existing zoning, the new restrictions and regulations imposed on landowners and the threat to public safety, your voice needs to be heard.

Wildfire Management: A Look at the Thomas Fire
The combination of frequent droughts, changing climate conditions, and longer fire seasons along with urban development expansion into wildland areas has resulted in more difficult conditions for managing wildfires. Wildfires are causing more frequent and wider-ranging societal impacts, especially as residential communities continue to expand into wildland areas. As of 2010, 44 million homes in the conterminous United States were located within the wildland-urban-interface, an area where urban development either intermingles with or is in the vicinity of large areas of dense wildland vegetation. These challenging conditions present a unique opportunity to adapt existing wildfire policy and management strategies to present and future wildfire scenarios.
This is the third presentation from the AGI Critical Issues webinar, Adapting Wildfire Management to 21st Century Conditions. This webinar explores recent trends in wildfires and changes in contributing factors / drivers of these hazards and features case studies of wildfire policy and management strategies in the western and southern United States.
Our speakers include:
Tania Schoennagel, Ph.D., Research Scientist, University of Colorado-Boulder
David Godwin, Ph.D., Southern Fire Exchange / University of Florida
Vaughan Miller, Deputy Chief, Ventura County Fire Department
This webinar is co-sponsored by the American Association of Geographers, American Institute of Professional Geologists, Geological Society of America, Southern Fire Exchange, and the Ventura Land Trust.

I am the only candidate who will take a stand against the destruction of our land title records. Every property owner, every borrower with MERS on their deed of trust, buyers of foreclosed properties, future sellers with bad titles, short-sale participants and everyone planning to own real property should be deeply alarmed and act accordingly.
Thank you for sharing this important message with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. This affects everybody across the entire United States of America.

A Broken System causes Foreclosure Crisis
Douglas Gillies presents thoughts on a broken system: Real property turned into securities, negating the real estate law of recording land transfer. Historical beginning of Law: contract law=shared expectation, meeting of the minds.
Current mortgages - no meeting of the minds with lack of underwriting, banks knew borrower could not repay the loan and benefited upon default with credit default swaps. No meeting of the minds=no contract. No valid note. No valid Deed of Trust. There is no loan, no security interest. The person who has the grant deeds owns the land. Challenge the authority of the banks to foreclose!
It's time to build a system that works! Time to pull together as a community and stop this travesty. We must take back our property! Wake up and get back on track - before it's too late!
Douglas Gillies is an attorney, writer, facilitator, and filmmaker. He graduated from UCLA with a BA in Psychology and a Doctor of Jurisprudence. As a trial lawyer in San Francisco, he appeared in the Coordinated Asbestos Litigation, one of the largest lawsuits in U.S. history. He taught Organizational Conflict at Cal State. As a facilitator, he adapted the tools used by lawyers in the courtroom to solve problems for the City of Santa Barbara, County of Santa Barbara, the State of New York, UCSB, the cities of Ojai, Carpinteria, and Ventura, Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce, Hospice, Fund for Santa Barbara, Fighting Back, J.S. Bower Foundation, and the Granada Theater. He has worked extensively with the National Institute for Urban Search and Rescue.
In 1990, Douglas organized Concensus Designs Inc. to produce town meetings using Common Law principles to examine global issues. He produced the La Casa Invitational at La Casa de Maria for three years, including The Big Picture Summit hosted by Tom Van Sant, A Matter of Life & Death hosted by Robert Muller, and The Grail hosted by Jean Huston. His articles and short stories have been published by newspapers, magazines, and the National Research Council.
Douglas collaborated with filmmaker Ron Dexter to produce Just Listen, The Big Picture, Savio, and On the Edge: A Wake-up Call -- featuring USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev, Jane Goodall, Ted Turner, Carl Sagan, Lester Brown, Deepak Chopra, Oren Lyons, and Huston Smith. His biography of Robert Muller, Prophet: The Hatmaker's Son (EastBeach.org) tells the story of a boy who escaped from the Nazis during World War II and fought in the French Resistance before joining the United Nations and becoming Assistant Secretary General.

J Krishnamurti - The Real Revolution - 6. Questioning
Krishnamurti with students at the Thacher School
One should have a bit of skepticism when asking questions. A wrong question will have no answer, but a right question, in its very asking, unfolds the understanding of it. It needs intelligence and sensitivity to ask the right question and to see all that is involved in it and go to the very end of it.

These eight programmes were produced and broadcast in America by the National Educational Television Network. They represent the earliest sound films of Krishnamurti speaking to audiences – it was the first time that he had allowed his talks and discussion groups to be filmed. The principle settings are the Oak Grove in Ojai, California, and the Thacher School in the Ojai Valley.

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'

J Krishnamurti - The Real Revolution - 1. Where are we going?
The world is full of misery and conflict, destructive brutality, aggression. Man has mastered the external world but inwardly he is still violent, acquisitive, competitive. Society has been built along these lines. The crisis in the world is actually a crisis in consciousness. It is important to bring about a revolution in the human mind.
“What we are trying, in all these discussions and talks here, is to see if we cannot radically bring about a transformation of the mind. Not accept things as they are. Nor revolt against it – revolt doesn’t answer a thing! But to understand it, to go into it, to examine it; give your heart and your mind with everything that you have to find out a way of living differently.”
