The Trinity Project - Castlemaine Gaol - Day Two - Paranormal Investigation
We are on a paranormal journey, investigating three haunted locations across Australia. We are accompanied by two other teams and other paranormal investigators. On our first day we investigated the old Geelong Gaol, which gave us EVPs, EMF and physical (touch/feel) evidence. We now head northward, toward the small town of Castlemaine, in order to investigate the old Castlemaine Gaol.

Old Castlemaine Gaol. Between 1861 and 1899 female prisoners were held here. Women were made to work in the laundry. The tediousness of washing, ironing, and mending the prisoners and wardens uniforms day in and day out.

Heritage Victoria Statement of Significance (1993)
HM Prison, Castlemaine was constructed of local sandstone between 1857 and 1861. It represents an important phase in the development of prison design associated with the completion of the Model Prison at Pentonville in1842. The influence of the Pentonville plan is evident in the radial wings, central hall and exercise yard (industries building) of Castlemaine Gaol. Beechworth, Bendigo and Castlemaine were the most accurate representations in Victoria of Jebb's panopticon design.
The completion of the Castlemaine Gaol in 1861 represents an important phase of prison construction in Victoria. Between 1857 and 1864 a remarkable period of building activity saw eight prisons constructed on Pentonville principles in metropolitan and regional areas. The HM Prison Castlemaine is an essentially intact example of a building type. The sequence of alterations, however, is of historical importance, representing the changing requirements of prison design and construction.
The H M Prison at Castlemaine is historically significant because of its ability to represent the size and status of this town which reached pre-eminence in the second half of the nineteenth century as a result of the discovery of gold.

Victorian Goldfields Maldon to Castlemaine
The North British Mine and Quartz Kilns are located in Maldon. There are two walking tracks from the picnic area, one is the Parkins Reef Circuit Walk (2.3km return), and the other is a short walk which takes you through the ruins of the North British Mine ending at the Quartz Kilns.
The Old Castlemaine Gaol is a prison located in Castlemaine, Victoria. From 1861 to 1908 (the colonial era), the gaol housed all manner of criminals, including lunatics, debtors and ten men that were hanged within the walls. In the later of these years however, the gaol housed mostly short term sentenced prisoners and first time offenders. The gaol then closed for a number of years, before reopening in 1954 to accommodate medium security prisoners from across the state once again. It remained open until August 1990.

We want the world to see this footage because Aboriginal deaths in custody must end.
CCTV footage of Yorta Yorta woman Tanya Day striking her head in a Castlemaine police cell has been released by Victoria’s coroner today.
She sustained traumatic brain injuries and later died in hospital.
Her family has fought to have the vision released. Until now the footage has only been played in court.
