Zanzibar- The Old Dispensary 17.11.2016
The Old Indian Dispensary (also called Isna’ashri Dispensary) is an historical and one of the most beautiful buildings of Zanzibar. It is located on the seafront near Ferry Terminal on Mizingani Road. It was got built as a charitable hospital by an Ismaili trader from India named Tharia Topan as part of Golden Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria. The construction was sterted in 1887 and completed in 1894. The Dispensary is a beautiful building with ornate carved balconies, stucco work and stained glass windows. As a result of Zanzibar Revolution in 1964, the dispensary stopped working and building was occupied by revolutionary forces. The Agha Khan Trust for Culture took over the building in 1990 for renovation and restored the building in 1994 as a fine symbol of the multi-cultural architecture and heritage of the Zanzibar Town. It is a must see place in Zanzibar.

THE ZANZIBAR REVOLUTION AND THE ARAB EDGE
The Arab Edge - Abdullahi Ibrahim, University of Missouri.
World-class scholars from across the globe gathered to trace the social currents of the Indian Ocean region at a recent event at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q). Hosted by GU-Q’s expert faculty, the symposium aimed to explore arts, ideologies, and identities in this macro-region.
The Indian Ocean is an important area of study, as the diverse region connects the Red Sea to the African continent, the Middle East, the Asian sub-continent, and the Far East. GU-Q’s faculty are driving in-depth study of the region with research that is at the cutting edge of theoretical and ethnographic fields.
“The Indian Ocean has been a theatre of human interaction throughout world history, with extensive challenges arising from retelling this history from the perspective of the sea. It is these very challenges that make the study of the Indian Ocean so fascinating,” said GU-Q Dean Ahmad Dallal. “I hope we here at Georgetown University in Qatar will be able to continue our contribution to this important topic of research.”
From the Horn of Africa to Southeast Asia, the event took a close look at a number of topics related to the countries bordering the Indian Ocean. These included the relations between Arabian and African nations, Russia’s interests in Somalia in the 1970s, and Cold War considerations in Tanzania.
2004 ZANZIBAR THE PALACE MUSEUM Beit el-Sahel 1

The palace was built in late 19th century to serve as a residence for the Sultan's family. After the Zanzibar Revolution, in 1964 it was formally renamed to People's Palace and used as a government seat. In 1994, it became a museum about the Zanzibari royal family and history.
One floor of the museum is dedicated to Sultan Khalifa bin Harub; another one to Sayyida Salme, best known as Emily Ruete, former Zanzibari princess who fled from the sultanate to relocate in Europe with her husband; the exhibits include some of her writings, clothes and daily life accessories.

View over Stone Town - Zanzibar
It may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
Stone Town was recently and deservedly declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. More information can be found at the UNESCO website.
Most of the houses that can be seen today were built in the 19th century when Zanzibar was one of the most important trading centres in the Indian Ocean region. The coraline rock of Zanzibar was a good building material, but it is also easily eroded. This is evident by the large number of houses that are in a bad state of repair. Several buildings have already been renovated and the Stone Town Conservation Authority has been established to co-ordinate the restoration of the town to its original magnificence. Pictured opposite is a 'before and after' look at the restoration work done on the Old Dispensary. As a result of sensible policy, nearly all of the major hotels built in Stone Town are housed in renovated buildings.
Zanzibar Travel Guide - Tanzania paradise
Zanzibar Travel Guide - Tanzania paradise
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania consisting of Zanzibar Island (locally, Unguja), Pemba Island and many smaller islands. Zanzibar Island is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Stone Town, part of Zanzibar City, is an old trade center, with mosques and winding lanes. The 1883 House of Wonders is a former sultan’s palace with a clock tower.
The Old Fort now houses a cultural center and a stone amphitheater. Underground aqueducts fed hot water to the late-19th-century Hamamni Persian Baths. Zanzibar island itself is approximately 90km long and 40km wide. In 1896, Zanzibar was the location of the world's shortest war, surrendering to Britain after 38 minutes of naval bombardment.
Cities of Zanzibar:
Stone Town – the vibrant and enchanting capital
Nungwi – at the northern tip of the island. Very popular with tourists since swimming in the ocean is possible even at low tide.
Kendwa – a few km south of Nungwi, also very popular with tourists.
Matemwe – a small traditional village in the North East.
Paje – the liveliest village on the South East coast known for excellent kiteboarding conditions
Jambiani – a small fishing village on the southeast coast
Michamvi – the remotest village on the South East coast known for great sunset beach and the coolest bar on Zanzibar, Kae Beach.
Makunduchi : at the south east tip of the island. 70 km from Stone Town.
Kizimkazi : small fishing village famous for the Dolphin tours.
There is a lot to see and to do on Zanzibar island. First and foremost, do enjoy the amazing white sand beaches especially at the north, east and south coast. The sand has the consistency of castor sugar! The best beaches are Nungwi/Kendwa, Matemwe/Kiwengwa and Paje/Jambiani, each offering different appeal.
The inner city of Stone town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, is a most unique city. Blending Moorish, Middle Eastern, Indian, and African traditions and architectures, it is possible to spend days winding through Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys.

Hotel Verde Zanzibar – Azam Luxury Resort and Spa opens its doors to the public
Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar: a beautiful slice of heaven located in the Indian Ocean 15 miles off the coast of Tanzania, boasting soft sand, white beaches and shimmering azure waters – a breath-taking place to escape from the world. With tourism on the increase and the improved popularity of Zanzibar as a holiday destination, and, more recently, an investment opportunity, you would be remiss not to add this island to your travel agenda (or investment portfolio).
The many beautiful hotels dotted along the coastline cater for leisure and holiday-makers, corporate and conference groups, incentive and domestic travellers catering to any pocket and with many more hotels, resorts and spas under construction and planned for, the area promises to become the destination of choice for any and all travellers.
Zanzibar is so much more than romantic coastlines and sunsets, she is an island rich in culture with great diversity in wildlife – plenty to see and do and a kaleidoscope of sights, smells, tastes, touch and sounds to fuel the soul. Known as the spice island, Zanzibar’s Spice Tour is a feast for the senses, taking you to a variety of small farms in the rural area to sample vanilla, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, aniseed, bay leaves, chili, coriander, ginger, turmeric, lemongrass and other spices as well as farms that grow tropical fruits (such as Jackfruit and soda soda berries), medicinal and ornamental plants.
Owner of the 106-roomed Hotel Verde Zanzibar – Azam Luxury Resort & Spa which opened on 21 March 2018, Mr Said Salim Awadh Bakhresa said that he chose this particular piece of paradise due to the increasing popularity of the area as a holiday destination and to fulfil his vision of becoming a leader in building East Africa’s greenest hotel and promoting responsible tourism. With his deep roots in the community, he added that he wants to give back and contribute to tourism and job creation in a positive way.
He went on to say that by commissioning Verde Hotels, a sustainable hotel management company, he was able to incorporate and employ green building elements, strategies and practices that will benefit the environment, the locals and guests. By sourcing from local suppliers – from food to staff, amenities and logistics – they are able to support the community, the economy and responsible tourism.
The hotel is situated 2km from the popular and ever-developing Stone Town where African tradition combines with Persian, Indian, Arab and European influences in the historic buildings, architecture and spectacularly carved wooden doors. The island has an incredible history so be sure to make time to visit the National Museum, the town market, The Old Fort and Cultural Centre, Hamamni Persian Baths or the Old Dispensary, Sultan Palace, The House of Wonders, the old Slave Market or any one of the fifty-one beautiful mosques.
So whatever your reason for visiting her shores, be it for health and wellness, water sports, to attend a wedding or conference, indulge in a romantic getaway, take time out with the family or to experience the food, culture and wildlife, you are hard-pressed to find something Zanzibar cannot offer – it’s the exciting thing to do.
