Old Dongola is a deserted town in Sudan located on the east bank of the Nile opposite the Wadi Al-Malik.An important city in medieval Nubia, and the departure point for caravans west to Darfur and Kordofan, from the fourth to the fourteenth century Old Dongola was the capital of the Makurian state.The urban center of the population moved downstream 50 miles to the opposite side of the Nile during the nineteenth century, becoming the modern Dongola.A Polish archaeological team has been excavating the town since 1964.

my first trip to sudan in 1978 led me over nubia to suakin in eastern sudan. from wadi halfa it went with the railway through the nubian desert to abu hamed and then from there in the direction dongola. alternately with the railroad, sailboat, truck and also short sections on foot. special interest was of the traditional clay building, in nubia, and the pyramids of the cushite-time.
further it went about omdurman where once one of the largest cattle and camel markets in north-east africa was.
through the savannah with the old historic sites meroe, naga and musarawwat led the way to kassala to the ethiopian border.
thence it went through the eastern mountains to the old port city suakin at the red sea.

Khartoum - Dongola - Kerma - Wadi Halfa - Abu Ahmad - Khartoum
Our 5 days trip from Khartoum to Wadi Halfa and back to Khartoum, following the railway track accross the desert.
We were 6 cars (5 mitsubishi and 1 Land Rover Discovery).
This trip was a recce to prepare a horse race from Wadi Halfa to Khartoum; trying to plan everything for the race.

Day 4 -Throne Hall at Old Dongola
The Throne Hall of Dongola, also known as the Mosque Building, is an archaeological site in Old Dongola, Sudan. It is a two-storey brick building situated on a rocky hill, overlooking the town and the Nile valley. It was originally built in the 9th century, serving as the richly adorned representative building of the Makurian kings. In 1317, during the period of Makurian decline, it was converted into a mosque, serving this purpose until it was closed and turned into a historic monument in 1969. Shortly afterwards Polish archaeologists began to excavate the building. It has been described as possibly the most important, symbolic edifice in the medieval history of Sudan.It is presently the oldest preserved mosque in Sudan.You may see all 290 videos of our expedition at my Playlist SUDAN in my channel. Nubia's history
Fernando Bellver is a Spanish artist based in Madrid with a strong wanderlust. On this trip, Bellver meets important Sudanese artists who will open the doors of their houses and their works to show the contemporary Sudanese art scene. Finally, Bellver tours landmarks of the Nubian culture as the cities of Meroe, Dongola and Kerme or temples as Jebel Barkal with his notebook in which he will reflect the fascination that these places cause him.
