Things to do in Hermanus South Africa ep 6 Visit the old Harbour
Hermanus is an awesome little town close to Cape Agulhas, the most southern tip of Africa.
The plans were put into action to build a new harbour. These plans were put on halt as there was no funding available during what became known as the Great Depression of the 1930’s.
It was only in 1939 that they could start with the construction of the southern breakwater (the present one), which again had to be placed on hold when a global war, known as World War II, broke out in 1939 and lasted until August 1945.
Hermanus, known as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world, plays host to thousands of visitors (2014 we welcomed over 100 000 visitors) who flock to the seaside resort to exhilarate in the unique natural environment, watch the whales and revel in music, enjoy great food and enjoy the many activities available during the festival .
The Whales are always the star performers at the festival and will be joined on land by great food, quality crafters, great sport events, 3 day coaching clinic, kids entertainment, a Music stage with over 20 artists performing over the festival, Marine ECO Village, Vintage Car Show and thousands of people celebrating Spring in the most beautiful place on earth - Hermanus
This short video highlights the town''s old harbour, some shops and underwater scene's from Dave's pool.

Old Habour in Hermanus, the start of a fishesrman's town
The Old Harbour Open-Air Museum is a provincial heritage site. It is unique in that apparently it is one of only two fishing harbours in the world that has been conserved in tact. Remnants of the vibrant fishing industry are seen everywhere. It is the axis around which the fishing village of Hermanus developed.

The Hermanus Wine Route
The Hermanus Wine Route lies on the R320, which wends its way through the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Although superb whale watching made Hermanus world famous, its wines are as deserving of praise. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is protected from the cool sea breezes but benefits from plentiful rain and sunshine, making an ideal growing environment for the wine estates in the area, which include Bouchard Finlayson, Creation Wines and Ataraxia. We popped into two other estates – Southern Right and Russell Hamilton Vineyards – to chat to owner and winemaker Anthony Russell Hamilton about what makes this corner of the Garden Route so perfect for viticulture.

#Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened in 1902 as the name was too long for the postal service), is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for Southern Right whale watching during the southern winter to spring seasons, and is a popular retirement location, too. Although the Southern Right whale is the most prolific species in the bay, it is not the only one that visits these shores. The whales can be seen from the cliffs all along the coast from as early as June and usually depart in early-December. They were once hunted in the nearby town of Betty's Bay, but are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. Hermanus lies along Walker Bay on the south coast of the Western Cape. It is located about 115 km southeast of Cape Town and is connected to the Mother City by the R43 highway (or coastal R44 scenic route) and N2 motorway. The R43 continues to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of Africa. Hermanus is 40 km from Gansbaai, a famous spot where one can dive amongst the Great White Sharks. It is also notable that Hermanus still boasts a historic railway station building without a railway line. The founders of the town decided not to lay any tracks as this would have made Hermanus more commercial and felt that Hermanus needed to stay a small Fisherman's Village. To this day the locals still refer to it as the village.
Sandbaai lies on the coast at the entrance to the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley. It is the most recently developed and fastest-growing residential area of Greater Hermanus
Zwelihle, designated a black area by the former government, is a residential area that consists mainly of shacks.

Things to do in Hermanus ep 5 Visiting Struisbaai Western Cape South Africa
Exploring Struisbaai, Western Cape, South Africa.
Clips of the most Southern part of Africa.
History of Struisbaai.
The history of South Africa saw approximately 150 shipwrecks that dot its coastline and these are found predominantly around the most southern tip of Africa at L’Agulhas. It’s fierce and treacherous history is similar to its reef which would eventually give birth to its name.
Tools found in the area date back to over a million years ago, having been made in the Early Stone Age. Fish traps and middens in the area leads us to believe that San and Khoekhoen people used to inhabit this region due to the abundant waters.
The exact discovery of Struisbaai and L’Agulhas seems, however, to be a subject of debate. For Struisbaai it is a debate over the exact origins of the name. The name supposedly has three origins, the first of which is accredited to the straw (“strooi” in Afrikaans) roofs of the fishermen cottages. Another possibility is the ostriches (“struisvogel” in Dutch) that used to roam here, while others believe the name was derived from an old Dutch word meaning “huge” due to the long stretches of beach. For L’Agulhas however, it was the establishment of the town that draws heavy debates. It is believed that L’Agulhas was discovered in the early 1400’s by the Portuguese and finally on 16 May 1488 Bartholomew Dias named the most southern point of Africa after St Agulhas. The southernmost tip was christened Cabo dos Agulhas (Cape of Needles) by the Portuguese, but French influence later turned it to L’Agulhas. As time went by, this version of the name was forgotten, but during the restoration of the Lighthouse the old name was once again reinstated and accepted by the National Names Commission.

One of the best things to do in Hermanus is swimming.
Uilenkraalsmond is a 30 min drive from Hermanus and 10 mintutes from Gansbaai and 90 minutes from Cape Town. It's one of the top Western Cape Camping sites. Most South Africans head for the Cape Town area to camp over December and enjoy the variety of blue ocean beaches in Hermanus and surrounding areas.
The beautiful Uilenkraalsmond, next to Franskraal, (Gansbaai) is the oldest established beach resort in Gansbaai and one of the most popular family holiday destinations in the Western Cape. What is today the caravan-park of Uilenkraalsmond, was already a camping ground 200 years ago

Haute Cabriere Cellar Restaurant
(BottlePlatePillow Video Blog: Short video Clip with no lighting, free-hand and limited editing)
A FRANSCHHOEK OLD FAITHFUL BEGINS A NEW ERA IN STYLE
South Africa, Franschhoek, September 2011; One of the stalwarts of the Franschhoek wine and culinary community, Haute Cabrière recently celebrated the re-opening of the Haute Cabrière Cellar Restaurant. After a glamorous makeover, including an interior redesign and menu update, the restaurant, situated halfway up the Franschhoek Pass is all set for the coming spring and summer season.
Dressed in crisp, white linens and featuring a series of sparkling handcrafted chandeliers and colourful artworks, many of them by cellar master and Haute Cabrière founder Achim von Arnim, the restaurant is a stylish version with an unmistakingly female touch of its former self. But despite the changes that have been implemented, of course much has remained at this iconic winery and eatery. The menu developed by recently appointed Head Chef Ryan Shell features a number of Haute Cabrière signature dishes including the famed mussels and seared tuna and naturally the cellar's famed wines and Pierre Jourdan MCCs continue to be a major drawcard for wine aficionados.
I like to think of Haute Cabrière as a diamond that my father has created, this new phase is simply revealing another facet to its beauty, says Takuan von Arnim whose wife Christiane has overseen the unveiling of this new face of one of the valley's most well loved gems. Along with an extensive new terrace looking out to the Franschhoek mountains, a new glass wall linking the tasting room to the restaurant and the familiar flashes of the von Arnim family's traditional colours of red and white seen in the staff uniforms and even the ribbons tied around the table napery, there is a renewed sense of vigour and excitement at the restaurant.
This is especially evident when chatting to Head Chef Ryan Shell. No stranger to the Franschhoek Valley (Ryan cut his culinary teeth at the famed Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français), Ryan is looking forward to welcoming in a new era at the restaurant but is mindful of not making dramatic changes for the sake of it there are so many regulars who have their favourites and we'll be offering them these along with my own innovations and ideas, says Ryan who has already developed a reputation for his mouthwatering new offerings that marry classic and contemporary mores including his Asian inspired Beef Wellington that includes soy cured beef fillet, a selection of exotic mushrooms and a sour cherry coulis. Passionate about provenance, since the restaurant opened on September 1, Ryan has been kept busy with daily visits from enthusiastic producers, something he says is an exciting process of discovery and development for him. It is this passion that will certainly drive the menu that will change according to the seasons and Ryan's gourmet finds.
Although the restaurant is a major drawcard to Haute Cabrière, it is of course the very popular and renowned wines and bubblies that put it on the map and deference to this heritage is evident throughout the dining experience. Recommended wines accompany every menu offering and the new tasting menu (no overly complicated dishes, just a reflection of the style of food we cook here says Ryan) is a six-course wine and food journey.
The Saturday morning ritual of sabrage led by a member of the von Arnim family during the course of a cellar tour and wine tasting remains a familiar feature at this much loved estate and those in the know arrive a few minutes before 11am to ensure they see the swashbuckling action for themselves.
Having opened its doors on the first day of Spring and celebrated its first weekend with hundreds of visitors at the Franschhoek Uncorked Festival, the restaurant at Haute Cabrière has got into the swing of things immediately and with its crisp new look and feel and exciting new menu, it seems set for every success.
The Haute Cabrière Cellar Restaurant is open for lunch daily and is also open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings for the remainder of this month. From October until the end of April, dinner is available from Monday to Saturday every week. To book your table, call (27) (21) 876 8500 or email reservations@cabriere.co.za
