Abandoned School in Toyah, Texas (operational 1912-1940's)
Toyah, Texas, the oldest town in Reeves County, was once a hub along the Texas & Pacific Railroad. Today, it is a sparsely populated ghost town with numerous abandoned buildings standing in various states of decay.
It began when a man named W. T. Youngblood moved his family to the area from Midland in 1879. Arriving in a covered wagon, Youngblood also brought a stock of general merchandise. He first opened a tent store in Toyah and began to travel as a peddler between the local ranches to sell his wares. He soon saved enough money to build a one-room store of adobe, which became a gathering spot for the area ranchers.
By 1910 the town reached its peak population of 1,052 and had four churches, four stores, two banks, two hotels, two lumber yards, and a drugstore. In 1912, a large brick school building (the one featured in this video) was constructed that served as both an elementary and high school.
A short time later, however, Toyah lost its shipping business to a new point on the line at Toyahvale, which was closer to the ranches. However, Toyah was able to sustain most of its population for several years due to the discovery of shallow oil fields in the area. But, with the start of the Great Depression, its population rapidly declined and by 1930, its population was just 553. At that time, it still boasted 17 businesses including a bank. Even though the community’s population was reduced, the town incorporated in 1933 and its number of businesses rose to 20.
Afterward, the population continued to drop. The bank closed in the late 1930s and the Hart Grocery in the early 1940s. By 1950, Toyah’s population dropped to 409 and by 1980 it had decreased to just 165.
Over the years, floods and high winds took their toll on many of the town’s buildings, and in April 2004, storms delivered eight inches of rain in about two hours. The dike that had been built to protect the town gave way due to the volume of water, flooding nearly every building in town. At some point, the Toyah school district was consolidated with the Pecos school district.
Though Toyah still supports a population of about 90 people and still has a post office, it is a shell of its former self today. Many of its original buildings are gone and most of the others are abandoned.
Toyah is located 21 miles southwest of Pecos, Texas just off Interstate Highway 20 (source: Legends of America).

The Last Word Documentary Trailer (2008)
The inevitable story of failure which every American anticipated but hoped would never have to be told. This documentary takes the Innocent Man on Texas Death Row tale to a dark corner feared by all - - proving that an innocent man has been executed by the State.
Director, Jesse Quackenbush
90 Minutes
A clash between good and evil strikes up on the High Plains of Texas when Johnny Frank Garrett, a 17 year old retarded boy is arrested, convicted and ultimately executed for the Halloween night rape, mutilation and murder of Sister Tadea Benz. The 76 year old nun was attacked while she slept in her room at the St. Francis Convent in Amarillo, Texas. Garrett claimed his innocence from the time of his arrest until his dying breath. Sixteen years after Garrett's execution new evidence rose up from the cold case grave of the Amarillo Police Department proving they executed the wrong man!
During interviews with key players the case of Johnny Frank Garrett unfolds like a recipe for executing the innocent. A death penalty obsessed District Attorney and his lap-dog medical examiner, ladder climbing cops, bloodthirsty media, enraged and fearful jurors, incompetent defense lawyers, politicized judges, witchhunting religious zealots and an ironfisted Governor with national ambitions meld together as perfect ingredients for a plate of government sponsored murder.
In Garrett's final statement he professed his innocence one last time but did so in a voice driven by hate and vengeance. In his chilling conclusion Garrett promised those responsible for his murder that someday he would have the last word and they would pay for what they had done. For most of Garrett's enemies someday happened long ago.
Regardless of faith, for or against the death penalty, liberal or conservative The Last Word compels viewers to feel not only the collective pain our societal conscience suffers for executing the innocent but also the individual fear of not knowing what margins of error our judges, jurors and executioners will find acceptable tomorrow.

The cops detaining us for being suspicious 08JUN2010 Part 1
Matthew Novak and I, Joseph Rasch, saw two cop cars hovering over an individual and went to check it out. We were then detained for the mere idea of being suspicious. We then humored them by giving our names and birth-dates. Ultimately in the end we walked away for them not finding any laws allowing them to detain us or give our IDs. All in all it was a waste of our time except that we are holding them accountable for their actions no matter how good or bad they might be. The beauty of being a private citizen holding a public servant accountable for all actions taken.

Petrified Wood Station in Texas
Originally a 1927 Texas Tourist Camp, owner E.F. Boydston recognized that money could be made by attracting road trippers. The restaurant was built in 1929 and lodging in the early 30's to accommodate the travelers that stopped to refuel the body and the automobile. Legend has it that Bonnie and Clyde stayed here not long before they made their way to Gibsland, Louisiana.
