Japan - Goldfish Town
T/I: 10:42:51
You see them all around the world in tanks, bowls and ponds, but have you ever thought how the humble little creature called the goldfish became so popular.
They were first raised 500 years ago in a town called Yamato-Koriyama, 500 kilometres south-west of Tokyo. Here at Yamato-Koriyama eighty percent of Japan's goldfish are raised. The town has a long history and the goldfish features in many artworks and decorations on buildings in the area.
Author and collector Sadao Ishida is a renowned authority on Japanese culture and goldfish. His collections depicting goldfish number over a thousand.
Goldfish breed well in this area because of the abundant catch basins. the runoff from rice paddies provides just the right water conditions for goldfish.
Mr Shigeo Koda is a fourth generation goldfish breeder. He maintains this hatchery with his brother. The goldfish are sold at auction where floating boxes of goldfish are poled from the ponds to the auction house.

Adorable Japanese Music ???? Traditional Koto, Shamisen, Bamboo Flute Music!
Original, adorable, super relaxing Japanese music with Traditional Folk instruments such as Bamboo Flute, Koto, Shamisen - Relaxing Zen Music. Buy this video:
Traditional Japanese Music Instruments:
Shakuhachi (Bamboo flute)
Shakuhachi are usually made from the root end of a bamboo culm and are extremely versatile instruments. Professional players can produce virtually any pitch they wish from the instrument, and play a wide repertoire of original Zen music, ensemble music with koto, biwa, and shamisen, folk music, jazz, and other modern pieces.
Koto
The koto is the national instrument of Japan. Koto are about 180 centimetres (71 in) length, and made from kiri wood (Paulownia tomentosa). They have 13 strings that are strung over 13 movable bridges along the width of the instrument. Players can adjust the string pitches by moving the white bridges in the picture before playing, and use three finger picks (on thumb, index finger, and middle finger) to pluck the strings, otherwise known as plectra.
Shamisen
The shamisen is a plucked stringed instrument. Its construction follows a model similar to that of a guitar or a banjo, with a neck and strings stretched across a resonating body. The neck of the shamisen is fretless and slimmer than that of a guitar or banjo. The body, called the dō (胴), resembles a drum, having a hollow body that is taut front and back with skin, in the manner of a banjo.

Kanazawa Castle ????, Ishikawa, Japan. 金沢城 Japan ????????
Kanazawa Castle ????, Ishikawa, Japan. ????????
Kanazawa Castle is just across the Ishikawa Bridge from Kanazawa's prime attraction, the Kenrokuen Garden. Both sites are must-sees on a visit to Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Kanazawa Castle was the seat of the power of the local Maeda clan. The Maeda family were the hereditary feudal lords (daimyo) of the Kaga province (what is now the southern part of Ishikawa Prefecture) from 1583. Kanazawa Castle, itself has had a difficult history.
Kanazawa Castle was begun by Maeda Toshiie (1538-1599), the man promoted to the feudal lord of the area by Oda Nobunaga and completed by his son Yoshinaga.
Burnt down on a number of occasions, only the superb Ishikawa Gate and the Sanjikken Nagaya, samurai warehouse survive from the original construction of Kanazawa Castle.
As with Kumamoto Castle in western Kyushu, a 2001 reconstruction program carried out by Sumitomo Corp. has restored the huge Gojikken Nagaya storehouse and arsenal and the Hishi-yagura and Hashizumemon Tsuzuki-yagura watchtowers adjoining the storehouse to their original state.
Gojikken Nagaya means literally the long building of fifty ken, a ken being an ancient measurement equal to about 1.8m, making the building about 90m in length.
Traditional construction methods were employed in the renovation from the original, existing building plans of Kanazawa Castle. Traditional carpenters from Kyoto were brought in to teach the local craftsmen in the old techniques.

The Machiya Museum is a small building at the southern end of the old town, which is open to the public. It shows how a typical merchant's residence looked like during the Edo Period. You can take a break in this facility learning how people in the old days lived.
Admission: Free
Hours: 9:00 to 16:30
Uchiko's name became synonymous with high quality white wax production in the late 19th century. At that time, wealthy local merchants built new homes or added to their own, resulting in beautiful streets lined with large, stylish, Meiji Period houses. The Yokaichi district has since been restored to preserve these buildings.
Yokaichi (八日市, Yōkaichi) is comprised of about 90 buildings along a single street. Two of these buildings are open to the public as museums, the largest and most impressive of which is the Kamihaga Residence. A combination ticket for Kamihaga Residence, the Uchiko-za kabuki theater and the Uchiko History Museum is sold for 900 yen from any of those locations.
Uchiko's Old Town is located about one kilometer or a 15 minute walk from JR Uchiko Station. The preserved section of the town is about 600 meters long and consists of about 90 historical houses.

Japan Travel: Yakushiji Temple Hosso Sect head temple beautifully lit up, Nara42
Japan Travel: Yakushiji Temple Hosso Sect head temple beautifully lit up, Nara42
Yakushiji was built by Emperor Tenmu in the late 7th century praying for the recovery of the emperor's wife who had been sick. Being one of Japan's oldest temples, the layout of Yakushiji is strictly symmetric, with the main hall and lecture hall standing on a central axis, flanked by two pagodas.
The main hall was reconstructed in the 1970s after being destroyed by fire, and houses a Yakushi trinity, a masterpiece of Japanese Buddhist art. The East Pagoda has survived the many fires and dates from 730, the temple's only extant structure. It appears to have six stories, but is actually three storied, like the West Pagoda.
The Genjo-sanzoin Garan is located slightly north of the main complex area., which is a recently built complex. It was constructed in 1981, and is dedicated to the 7th century Chinese monk Genjo-sanzo., who is famous for his extensive travels to India and Central Asia. Yakushiji is the head temple of the Hosso Sect of Japanese Buddhism. Genjo-sanzo's teachings had a profound influence upon the Hosso Sect.
The main building at Genjo-sanzoin Garan is a central octagonal hall, where there are some of Genjo-sanzo's remains enshrined. Behind the octagonal hall, there is a building that displays works of Hirayama Ikuo, one of Japan's most celebrated painters who passed away in 2009. Hirayama's works were greatly inspired by Genjo-sanzo's journeys, the scenes of which was often depicted in his works. The complex is closed about half the time.
