Chuck Adams - 13,000 Years of Migration in the Middle Little Colorado (Homol'ovi Area) River Valley
Dr. Charles Adams is the Curator of Archaeology for the Arizona State Museum. He is also Director of the Homolovi Research Program and a professor of archaeology at the University of Arizona.
During the summer, he directs a field school at Rock Art Ranch for students on the analysis of material culture from surveys and excavations of sites and landscapes occupied from 6000 BCE to 1250 CE. Rock Art Ranch encompassing 5,000 acres between Winslow and Holbrook. It is a cattle ranch and home to one of the best preserved and most extensive collections of ancient petroglyphs in the world. Images etched into rocks adorn cliff faces, alcoves and overhangs in scenic Chevelon Canyon. Rock Art Ranch has immense archaeological significance, with researchers from the Smithsonian Institution, Heard Museum and other museums and universities visiting regularly.
Dr. Adams presents his recent findings from his work near Rock Art Ranch.
Fort Bridger State Historic Site
Fort Bridger State Historic Site can be reached by taking Interstate 80, Exit 34 then going approximately 3 miles to the town of Ft.Bridger. The site is on the south side of the highway behind the bronze statue of Jim Bridger.
Established by Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez in 1843 as an emigrant supply stop along the Oregon Trail. It was obtained by the Mormons in the early 1850s, and then became a military outpost in 1858. In 1933, the property was dedicated as a Wyoming Historical Landmark and Museum.
There are several restored historical buildings from the military time period, a reconstructed of the trading post operated by Jim Bridger, and an interpretive archaeological site containing the base of the cobble rock wall built by the Mormons during their occupation of the fort. All of these locations are signed in Braille. In addition, a museum containing artifacts from the various different historical time periods is housed in the 1888 stone barracks building. There are gift shops in both the museum and the reconstructed trading post. There is no camping available at Fort Bridger. Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is celebrating its' 75th Anniversary. wyoparks.org

Video of Holbrook/Petrified Forest KOA, AZ from SwitchbackKids .
Video highlights from our time in Petrified Forest
-----------------------------------------
SwitchbackKids .'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Convenience over scenery near Petrified Forest National Park
Since there are no developed campgrounds inside Petrified Forest National Park, you have two options: choose a private campground outside of the park, or grab a permit and set off into the backcountry. We did both during our visit in August 2015.
We were pleasantly surprised with our campsite at the KOA outside of Petrified Forest. Typically, we prefer campgrounds that are more scenic and rustic, but after a few weeks on the road, we enjoyed the amenities (hot showers, coin laundry, wifi, all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast) and convenience (less than 30 minutes to the park) of this KOA. We chose the “deluxe” tent site, which, for $2 more than the regular tent site, offered a covered picnic table, hot & cold water, and electricity at the site. The campground was nearly empty at this time of the year, so although the sites are close together, we felt alone. The only downsides would be the less-than-inspiring scenic views and the cramped sites during peak season.
The proximity and position of this campground to the national park allows for easy visiting and minimal backtracking. We’d suggest starting your trip along Highway 40 to the northern Painted Desert Visitor Center to get acquainted with the park, then making your way south and exit near the Rainbow Forest Museum. Simply return to the campground via Highway 180.
Inside the park (north to south), here are the must-sees: the Painted Desert National Historic Landmark (try to time it and attend a free ranger guided tour), the Blue Forest, Jasper Forest (below this overlook was our favorite trail of the park!), Crystal Forest, and the Giant Logs area. Don’t forget to stop at both visitor centers for more information about this fascinat...
