Dieter Nickeler: MHD flows at astropauses and in astrotails (18.06.2014)
Dieter Nickeler's (Ondrejov observatory, Czech Republic) presentation at Tartu Observatory's astronomy seminar on June 18, 2014.
Stellar winds are obstacles for the interstellar medium which shows a relative movement with respect to the star, e.g. the Sun. Due to the interaction of both flows, namely that of the stellar wind and the interstellar medium flow, both flows are decelerated and contact surfaces form, so called astropauses or in the case of the Sun the heliopause. The solar wind cavity inside the heliopause is called the heliosphere (=general astrosphere). Usually these separating surfaces, the astropauses, are defined and determined by the distribution and location of the null points of the magnetic field and null point of the plasma flow, the so called stagnation points. We present and discuss simplified models of such astrospheres and especially their downflow regions, the astrotails, taking (ideal) field-aligned MHD flows into consideration. Almost certainly shear flows occur in these astrospheres or at the astropauses and a strong fragmentation of electric currents, magnetic field and vortices takes place. Even if for the calculation of these nonlinear steady-state MHD flows, well ordered magnetic field structures are used, fractal-like structures will be formed. The cascading down to very small structures can lead to instabilities, eruptive processes like reconnection and the occurence of strong localized electric fields. These processes may be also responsible for acceleration mechanisms, contributing to cosmic ray production.
Grigoris Maravelias: The circumstellar environment of B[e] Supergiants - disks or rings?
Astronomy seminar at Tartu Observatory
11.05.2016
Grigoris Maravelias (Ondrejov observatory, Czech Republic):
The circumstellar environment of B[e] Supergiants - disks or rings?
Massive stars affect strongly their environment through their intense stellar winds, which transfer momentum and energy to the interstellar medium and enrich it with chemically processed material as they evolve. This interaction becomes substantial in short-lived transition phases of massive stars (e.g. B[e] Supergiants, Luminous Blue Variables, Yellow Hypergiants) in which mass-loss is more enhanced and usually eruptive. However, these phases are not well-understood, such as the lack of B[e] Supergiants predicted from stellar evolution theory. In order to improve our knowledge for the particular class of B[e] Supergiants we have initiated a campaign to study them with high-resolution optical and near-infrared spectroscopy. This tool allow us to investigate their complex circumstellar environment, consisting of a combination of atomic, molecular and dust regions of different temperatures and densities. We use the strategic [OI] and [CaII] emission lines, and the CO bandheads to probe the structure and the kinematics of their formation regions. We find that these emission lines form either in a single or in multiple equatorial rings, a probable result of previous mass-loss events.

Night Sky around the World - Timelapse Video - 4K
In the bright light of city lights we often forget how amazing night sky can be. I have seen my own Moon shadow many times, but every-time I notice it, I am simply fascinated by the amount of light Moon produces. Full Moon not only casts its moon shadows, but also brings up dark blue color of otherwise very dark black night sky. Camera setting during such times doesn't need to be that extreme as when you are trying to capture Milky way during Moonless night.
Travel with me around the world to see how night looks in various locations, might it be remote Mongolian ger or Dracula castle in Romania. Various fascinating desert landscapes of Middle East are wonderful locations to capture under the night sky. I hope you'll enjoy this trip with me.

SUMMARY
=======
Peter Kušnirák (born 1974) is a Slovak astronomer, discoverer of minor planets, and a prolific photometrist of light-curves at Ondřejov Observatory in the Czech Republic.He was the principal observer to discover that the two main-belt asteroids 3073 Kursk and 5481 Kiuchi are in fact binary asteroids. In 1999, he discovered the Eunomian main-belt asteroid 24260 Kriváň, which he named after one Slovakia's national symbols, as well as 21656 Knuth and 20256 Adolfneckař, both located in the Aquarius constellation at the time. He is based out of numerous observatories in the Czech Republic, including the Ondřejov Observatory, and works solo or with partners.
The Flora asteroid 17260 Kušnirák, discovered by the U.S. LINEAR project at Lincoln Lab's ETS in 2000, is named in his honor (M.P.C. 10060).

SUMMARY
=======
On 13 October 1990, meteoroid EN131090, with an estimated mass of 44 kg, entered the Earth's atmosphere above Czechoslovakia and Poland and, after a few seconds, returned to space. Observations of such events are quite rare; this was the second recorded using scientific astronomical instruments (after the 1972 Great Daylight Fireball) and the first recorded from two distant positions, which enabled the calculation of several of its orbital characteristics. The encounter with Earth significantly changed its orbit and, to a smaller extent, some of its physical properties (mass and structure of its outer layer).
