EXPLORING LIGHTNING RIDGE, NSW
I visit Lightning Ridge, NSW. Lightning Ridge is a small opal mining town inland New South Wales. It's famous for mining the black opal. I show some of the things I did during my time at the Ridge, including visiting the opal fields at Grawin and seeing plenty of kangaroos (which are everywhere)! The landscape is barren and dry, with burnt out wrecks of cars, camper vans and mines dotted all over.

Lightning Ridge - Outback Aussie Trip, Easter 2019
G'day G'day, Lightning Ridge would have to be one of the most interesting places we've visited so far. From an outsider looking in it seems like it would be a hard life. The locals will tell you it is indeed a hard life. However, one thing I noticed was they were all pretty happy and life was simplistic and mostly stress free. A great sense of community can be felt and everyone has time of day for you and want's to know where your from and what your up to. There are many characters in town, and the town itself has many quirks. A must visit place to anyone should you be in the area or not far. Hell, even just make the trip out there. You won't be let down!

Welcome to Black Opal Direct!
In our final video for the year, Justin takes you on an adventure through the great Australian outback. With its wide-open plains and the vast expanse of flat land, it's almost silly that cars even come with a handbrake!
Here in Lightning Ridge, you can always count on your friendly farmer for an afternoon cuppa. Sometimes he's just not quite ready for you, yet.
Most people climb down the mine shafts here in the Ridge, but I've found a way faster way to do it. Just make sure you have health insurance first.
Safety is also important down in the mines because you never know what you'll bump into. You also never know where you'll find opal next; sometimes in the most bizarre cracks and crevices!
Over the years I've listened to your complaints and heard your cries. Justin, why are your hands so dry?? You need a manicure Do you pet your dog with those hands?!
So, I went out and got myself a freshly manicured pair to bring into 2020 with me. Now you've got nothin' on me! New year new hands!
In all seriousness, we appreciate the community you all help us build and love to spread the joy through opal and humour! We're so thankful for everyone that joins us in exploring all the facets of the opal industry and can't wait to show you more next year.
Thank you, and Happy Holidays!
Episode 31. Lightning Ridge
Enjoy a look around the unique, outback, opal mining town of Lightning Ridge (NSW Australia)
Lightning Ridge is not your regular sort of town.
Lightning Ridge
Recently, we flew out to Lightning Ridge, the home of black opal.
Black opal is the rarest form of opal, and even in the 21st century, all opal is still mined by hand. There is no successful way to automate opal mining. 90% of the world's opal comes from Australia and the bulk of that now comes from the Lightning Ridge area.

WHITE CLIFFS OPAL FIELD
White Cliffs, just over one thousand kilometres west of Sydney, is reputedly Australia's first commercial opal field. By Word War One when thousands of miners had rushed to find their fortunes, White Cliffs had already reached its peak. But there are still some commercial miners and hobby miners active there and there is the possibility of valuable opal finds for amateur fossickers. White Cliffs might not be as well known as Lightning Ridge or Coober Pedy but it is just as fascinating and the local community very welcoming -- worth a visit.
