Biking through the Malaysian Jungle
OPEN SKY CYCLING
Bicycling from main train station (KL Sentral) after meeting at Mercu UEM, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The central train station of Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral) has little and expensive parking because you are suppose to take public transport there. Or how about bicycling there....?!
In this video, I had a meeting in the Mercu UEM building with Khazanah Nasional Berhad, and decided to bicycle home on my Brompton, which is a 4.8 km ride.
On the way, and despite the threat of imminent tropical rain (big drops falling + wind picking up) I stop by the cluster of newly and nicely refurbished restaurants along Jalan Raja Chulan, namely at the small loop road Lorong Raja Chulan, to book a dinner table at Pier 12. Unfortunately, however, heavy rain and lightning occurred that evening, so we had to give up the booking. But I did return some days after and the restaurant good, quiet and has fantastic unobstructed views to the 421 meter tall KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur).
I provide verbal commentary by speaking to the camera throughout the trip. Sorry for the slightly poor audio, which I'm trying to fix.
Some of the trip highlights are:
5:46 Watch a motorbike turn off the road and seek shelter from the rain below the bridge, many of which have designated rain shelters for motorbikes
7:50 Turning down Jalan Petaling and cycling through a beautifully retrofitted square with lots of greenery. It's like a small green oasis in that neighbourhood. The triangular square is between Jalan Petaling, Jalan Tun H S Lee and Lebuh Pudu. I believe ThinkCity played a role in this green transformation of the city.
11:24 Cycling past the restored shophouses along Jalan Raja Chulan and Lorong Raja Chulan, now turned into restaurants. And visiting, on foot, the Pier 12 restaurant and making a booking for 6 people.
18:00 Short-cut by crossing the center road barrier. One of the advantages of bicycling, which cannot even be done on a motorbike
18:23 Meeting another fellow cyclist (rare sight) and giving him the thumbs-up
Enjoy the ride!

FREE Buses in Kuala Lumpur?? How to Use GoKL Buses (A PURPLE LINE ADVENTURE)
TIME STAMPS: 0:30 The GoKL Basics; 5:25 SIX Questions about GoKL; 9:41 Map of 4 GoKL Lines; 14:50 Boarding the Purple Line Bus; 16:58 Passing Central Market; 21:54 A Busy Stop-Muzium Telecom; 23:17 KL Tower Stop; 30:01 Starhill Gallery Stop in Bukit Bintang; 32:48 Leaving Bukit Bintang; 37:31 Back to Chinatown; 38:55 Kota Raya Stop; 44:02 Back at Pasar Seni Station; 45:36 Answering My SIX Questions; 49:05 Summary and Conclusion
Buses and I don't generally get along. However, there is a special type of bus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that I thought I should get to know better: the free bus service called GoKL. I thought there were 4 GoKL lines. But in the course of my GoKL adventures, I learned that there are now six of them: Purple, Green, Blue, Red, Orange, and Pink. And there are plans to open up even more lines in the future.
The Purple Line was a good place to start because the Purple Line buses start and end their route right across the street from my guest house at the Pasar Seni Station. I had a lot of questions about the GoKL service, and the best way to answer those questions seemed to be to just jump on the nearest GoKL bus and see what happens.
I hope you enjoy the video.

20 km Bicycle Trip + Crash (TTDI to Bukit Bintang)
Apart from the bicycle crash (49:15), we had an enjoyable 20 km bicycle ride from the suburbs to down-town Kuala Lumpur. Verbal commentary/conversation is given along the way for this trip, which starts at TTDI MRT train station, tours the Taman Rimba Park, cuts through the TPC Golf Course road to the SPRINT highway bringing us to Mont Kiara for a breakfast stop at Kopenhagen Coffee. From there, I proceed bicycling to Bukit Bintang alone, first taking short-cut across big drain on home-made bridge leading up to Solaris, then past Publica and into Bukit Tunku. The last 4 km past Merdeka Square, Masjid Jamek and to Bukit Ceylon was not filmed, as battery died.
The trip was filmed with a GoPro Hero4 on a chest strap with a stabilizer (Zhiyun Rider-M).
THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1st STAGE OF THE TRIP (4 persons) WERE:
0:14 Inside the TTDI MRT station, which opened only 1 year ago
4:04 Sunrise sky, nice lighting
6:38 Taman Rimba Park @ Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), entering the park
8:35 Unfolding the bicycles
14:47 Our group photo (still photo inserted in video)
15:11 Ant ‘volcano’ hill
16:09 Tour of Taman Rimba Park incl. the parts potentially undergoing development despite significant opposition by local residents
30:40 Leaving Taman Rimba Park again
33:06 Gate at TPC Golf course, entering through (this private road is closed at night)
43:00 Sime Darby International Gallery and showroom
46:13 SPRINT highway, cycling along on sidewalks
49:15 Bicycle CRASH!
1:03:05 Touch-me-not plants with leaves closing when touched. Fun to watch. Scientific name is Mimosa Pudica
1:15:55 Trails into Bukit Kiara along the SPRINT highway
1:16:06 Look at detailed Bukit Kiara trail map; view online here: trailforks.com/region/bukit-kiara
1:22:55 Leaving SPRINT highway and entering into Desa Sri Hartamas
1:26:24 Big trees nicely shading road (Jalan 32/70a)
1:36:35 Garden International School, passing by the entrance
1:37:23 Kopenhagen Coffee, arriving outside our very enjoyable breakfast place. Wouldn’t miss it for any bicycle crash in the World ;-) See more here: kopenhagencoffee.com or instagram.com/kopenhagencoffee
1:42:13 Locking the three bicycles outside, but bringing my own ‘dear’ Brompton along into the café
1:44:19 Funny goodbye wave with bloody knee
1:44:40 Still photo of Kopenhagen Coffee, a charming and ‘instagrammable’ place
THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2ND STAGE OF THE TRIP (1 person) WERE:
1:45:40 “Hygge” the special Danish word that is becoming famous internationally despite not being easily translated. “Hygge” means to have a good and enjoyable time with other people and in a venue with a nice atmosphere.
1:49:32 Exciting short-cut on home-made bridge across big drain leading to Jalan Duta Kiara
2:01:00 Jalan Duta Roundabout, a bit scary to bicycle here, though, more safe now with the traffic lights added
2:02:11 Turning into Bukit Tunku and passing by the National Tennis Center (at the corner)
2:02:49 Turning into Taman Tunku, nice little commercial area in Bukit Tunku
2:02:55 Lady with the three dogs tell me they are aggressive towards bicycles; shortly after one of the dogs growls while it approaches without being on a leash(!)
2:04:25 My favourite stairwell thanks to simple white blocks that let the daylight through in a beautiful, classy and non-glary manner and also ensures natural ventilation. Enjoy!
2:07:04 Showing my Camelbak drinking bag with hose for a hands-free way to drink water while bicycling.
2:08:17 Camelbak in action
2:11:38 Arriving at my meeting destination in Bukit Tunku
….sorry, the last 4 km back to Bukit Ceylon / Bukit Tunku is not included, because my battery died.
Hope you enjoyed this rather long video. I know many of you – from your comments on my other videos – enjoy the long uncut videos. For those of you who don’t, I hope the above list of highlights were helpful.

So I am traveling Solo and I hate it. So this is what I do to find friends when I travel...
When I started traveling in April, I had a GF, but then after 4 months of being with some 24/7 started getting challenging.
When I went to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia I was looking forward to the break.
It was all fun when I first arrived to the hostel, people were heading out to the bar street and I was handed a beer at checkin....but then the next day everyone left!
....I got bored and I walking around the city like... (sad music and B-Roll)
So I went on the Couchsurfing App and went to Hangouts, then I was telling everyone lets meet at the park.
You know how many people met me at the park? Zero!
So I thought I would be clever a create an event in the App, Going to the helicopter bar tonight. Then people started responding, I will join you! I was like finally success. But when I got there...again nothing! But it was a really cool bar.
The problem at my hostel is everyone was on their phones and I kind think everyone guy was just hitting on the girl from Belgium who was the receptions....
I stayed at the KL Dorms if you are wondering, would I stay there again? Probably not.
I was about to give up on the app. But then I started getting messages and feedback. First it was Luisa then it was Keegan.
Just by sheer chance Luisa ended moving to my hostel and we went the KL Towers!
She was a breath of fresh air that I needed and had such a great life story being from Uganda and moving to work in China.
When you go to the top of the KL Towers, there was long que for the glass box and so we spent the time in line dicussing our posses.
She was very ready when she got up there. I thought I was too, and then....evidence by these photos I was having some trouble letting go of the railing.
So here are some tips if you plan to use couchsurfing app. Make sure to be very specific so post Time and Place and you will get better feed back.
If you just post the defaults like explore the area then it will be 10 people that cannot agree to anything.
Please fill out your profile with information, and photos so people can spot you right away. I would recommend only using your First name and keeping some person details to yourself. If you actually plan to use it to stay at peoples places, getting verified is also a good idea.
The negatives would be some people do sometimes try to use it as a dating app (me...never), what was the question?
or sometimes you get a lot of locals trying to meetup to try to get you to come to their bar or restaurant. I would definitely recommend meeting people in public places.
In future videos you will get to meet Ali and Valeria who I also met through the app and had such a wonderful experience. They both even happen to come to Bali for new years!
The other apps that I also suggest is FB group, backing....country. They are good and I actually went to Cambodia from advice from a girl in the group, who ended up at the same hostel.
Tinder is a good option too, however if you are just looking for friends, its very important you state that in the description or the headline upfront. It can get a little awkward when people get the wrong expectations.
Tasik Titiwangsa Reopen | New Children's Waterplay Park, Huge Playground, Maze Garden, Canopy Walk
Tasik Titiwangsa Reopening.
The park boasts four new features — Maze Garden, Banjaran Canopy Walkway, Children’s Waterplay Park and two playgrounds (one for toddlers and the other for children aged six to 12).
DBKL Project Implementation and Building Maintenance Department senior assistant director (Architect) Noor Fazlina Rosley said people had been trespassing although the park was closed, which showed that many were looking forward to the park’s reopening, which was initially slated for January next year.
She added that Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan allowed the park to be opened earlier as it was the school holidays.
DBKL has invited parents and children with cerebral palsy to try out the new playground to get their feedback on how to improve it.
“As the park’s concept is inclusivity, we want to ensure the park is accessible to not just the able-bodied but also those with limitations, be it children, the elderly or disabled,” said Noor Fazlina.
The canopy walkway’s design was inspired by the Titiwangsa mountain range.
Under the canopy walk is a man-made river shrouded in artificial mist with several boulders taken from two rivers.
“The boulders were originally placed at Sungai Gombak and Sungai Batu to create rapids but because of flooding, the boulders have been brought here and they add a recyclable element to the whole feature,” she said.
The paths of the maze garden are lined with orange jessamine plants and the shape of the maze is inspired by Nusantara wood carving on architecture.
The children’s water play area will operate from 10am to noon and 4pm to 7pm daily.
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the new 4.6km jogging track and 2.55km cycling path around the lake.
The High Fountain Jet in the centre of the lake will be operational again, and this time, it will have the capacity to shoot up to 100m in the air.
Noor Fazlina said this was equivalent to the height of a 30-storey building.
Small fountains will also be in operation to aerate the water in the lake.
“The aeration of the lake is important to avoid algae overgrowth,” she said, adding that the lake had been producing lots of algae.
“The river cleaning will be managed by the Drainage and Irrigation Department while the project will be monitored by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad.”
The project is also a part of the River of Life beautification project as the lake is connected to Sungai Bunus.
Previously, the park drew an estimated 300 visitors daily and over 18,000 monthly, with intermittent maintenance carried out.
Starting tomorrow, the park and lake will be fully open to the public from 6am to 10pm.

NEED My Morning Coffee - Kettle Shopping in Yangon
Normal kettles - even travel kettles - are a bit too heavy to put in a backpack. So I've always got my eyes open for a lightweight alternative. In Indonesia, I found a brand of plastic kettle with a simple heating element that was perfect. Unfortunately, I was careless and let the water boil down to below the element, and it blew up. (In my defense, my hostel room in Kuala Lumpur was so loud with traffic noise that I couldn't even hear the kettle boiling, so I forgot I had plugged it in. Such a dummy.)
Since then, I've been without a lightweight kettle. In Yangon, I wasn't deliberately shopping for a kettle, but I always scanned local shops to see what was available. And on this day, I might have gotten lucky. As the packing told me, this electronic cup just might be the perfect.
Cheers,

UNESCO Heritage Sites in Malaysia
A UNESCO World Heritage Site is a form of recognition given to areas or places that have been deemed of significance for its natural and cultural heritage, and the sites are protected by international treaties. Discover two of the World Heritage Sites in Malaysia and three other places that should earn the title
1. George Town
The capital city of Penang is a gem of the country with so much historical and cultural legacy. George Town is filled with colonial buildings and shop houses that reflect the city’s centuries long heritage, which contributes to it being recognized as having a unique architectural and cultural townscape that is unparalleled anywhere in East and Southeast Asia. With a multiracial community and world class delicacies, it’s no question why George Town is one of the best travel destinations in Malaysia.
2. Gunung Mulu National Park
A spectacular natural wonder, Gunung Mulu National Park is located in Miri, Sarawak. The area consists of a lush tropical rainforest, diverse wildlife and a dramatic limestone karst formation which is the main highlight of the place. The park is also famed for the massive cave systems, which includes the world’s largest, Sarawak Chambers. A trekking adventure can be possible if you book a trip from a travel agency
3. Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge
Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge is a quartz dyke that runs through northeast of Kuala Lumpur and several regions of Selangor. Stretching out for over 14km, it’s believed to be the longest pure quartz dyke in the world. It’s also said that the shape of the ridge resembles a dragon’s back. Formerly known as Klang Gates Quartz Ridge, the forest here provides a natural habitat for many endangered animals like pangolins, tapirs and sun bears. Arrange your trip with a travel agency.
4. Forest Research Institute Malaysia
Better known as FRIM, Forest Research Institute Malaysia is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. Founded 1929, FRIM is the largest man-made forest that promotes sustainable management and optimal use of forest resources in Malaysia. Located in Kepong, FRIM also offers a lot of recreational activities like trekking, cycling and bird watching. Contact a travel agency in Malaysia to arrange your trip.
5. Royal Belum State Park
Located within the Belum-Temenggor Forest Reserve in Perak, the Royal Belum State Park was originally gazetted as Belum Forest Reserve in 1971, and later regazetted as a State Park in 2001 before it became recognized as a National Heritage Site in 2012.
