Vegetables and forbidden fruits: Ziro farms and orchids
The fertile land of Ziro gives a incredible yield majorly owing to the progressive techniques of the Apatanis. An early morning scenario has a very misty Ziro Valley with its prominent paddy fields and bamboo and Pine cultivation. Amidst the high yielding vegetable farms are also fruits that can be harmful to consume, like the grape like flowering fruit.
The Apatani, or Tanii, are a tribal group of people living in the Ziro valley in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. However more Apatanis live outside this valley, making the total population approximately 60,000 all over the state.
Apatani women carry out the household chores of gathering both wild and kitchen garden vegetables, cooking, fetching water, pounding rice, cleaning houses, washing clothes and utensils, nursing, looking after infants and children, ginning (clothes) and spinning of cotton, and other jobs associated with the household. In the field, the Apatani woman carries out the tasks that include gardening, seeding, transplanting of paddy and millet, weeding of fields, and other activities. At home, the internal family income is controlled by a woman. But the man also has his part of duty in looking after cultivation activities, and acts as the head of family in society.
Ziro is a census town in Lower Subansiri district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been a favorite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. In a meeting of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) on December 12, 2012 it was shortlisted for inclusion in Tentative List for further nomination to UNESCO for inscription in the World Heritage Site.

Water fun for Indian elephant in Pakke, Arunachal Pradesh
Pakke Tiger Reserve is one of the finest yet one of the least visited tourist destinations in India. Not very far from the usual Kaziranga-Nameri-Eaglenest-Tawang route is the option of visiting PTR. PTR is a two and a half hour drive from Kaziranga National Park and an hour and a half away from Nameri National Park.
Once you reach PTR, you are guaranteed of a wilderness experience. You will most likely encounter wild elephants along the way, sometimes the occasional charge by a makhna (tuskless male elephant). Also commonly seen along trails are four species of squirrels, capped langurs and Assamese macaques. Along the banks of the Khari, Upper Dikorai and Pakke Rivers, there are plenty of signs of riverine species such as the crab-eating mongoose, at least two species of otters and regular sightings of the Assam roof turtle.
PTR is a paradise for viewing and photographing four species of hornbills. The experience of watching hornbills flying to their roost is a must for every wildlife enthusiast. Every evening, just before sunset you will be lucky to witness more than a hundred hornbills flying above the horizon to their roost sites. In addition, PTR harbors other specialties such as the ibisbill and the White-winged wood duck. Nestled among hills and criss crossed by rivers, Khari is only 13 km away from the park headquarters at Seijosa. white-winged wood ducks are often sighted in Khari Lake, which is a 10 km trek from Khari Beat.

The Tropical Evergreen Forest Of Arunachal Pradesh | Ziro | Koloriang | Ziro to Koloriang |
Situated on the northeastern tip of the country, the state of Arunachal Pradesh is a part of Eastern Himalayan Ranges located between 26º 28’ to 29º30, N latitudes and 91º 30’ to 97º30’ E longitudes. Arunachal Pradesh occupies the largest area (83.743 Sq. Km) in the northeastern region of India, and consists of mountainous ranges sloping to the plains of Assam. The diversity of topographical and climatic condition has favored the growth of luxuriant forests, which are home to myriad plant and animal forms, adding beauty to the landscape. Living in this incredible cradle of nature are the colorful and vibrant tribes of Arunachal Pradesh for whom the forests and wildlife are of special significance. The total human population of 8,64,558 (1991 census) lives in 3649 villages and small towns. The cattle population of the State is 9 lakhs (1991 census). Livelihoods of local people have been closely linked and heavily dependent on forest resources since time immemorial. However, with increasing population, development activities, large number of wood-based industries and unsustainable land use practices like jhuming, the pressure on forest resources is consistently increasing leading to their degradation affecting regeneration and productivity. As per State of Forest Report, 1999 of Forest Survey of India, about 82% of total geographical area of 83,740 sq. kms., which is about 62% of the total geographical area and includes 10185.40 sq. km. of Reserve & Protected Forests which is about 12% of the area while the Protected Area Network covers and area of 9527.99 sq. km being 12% of the area and balance 38% is Unclassified Forest. The important forests types found in the state are Tropical evergreen, semi evergreen, deciduous, Pine, Temperate, Alpine and grassland etc. Forests are the mainstay for the people of Arunachal Pradesh and are the richest biogeographical province in eastern Himalayan zone. The State has 20% species of country’s fauna, 4500 species of flowering plants, 400 species of pteridophytes, 23 species of conifers, 35 species of bamboos, 20 species of canes, 52 Rhododendron species & more than 500 species of orchids and is considered as one of the 12 mega diversity “Hot Spots” in the world. Forests generate the largest employment and are the single largest source of revenue for the State. Supreme Court had imposed certain restrictions on felling of trees in 1996, which has affected the revenue resources of the State. The Supreme Court has since allowed timber operations but has directed threat regeneration should be commensurate to the felling, and State Govt. is to ensure availability of sufficient funds for regeneration. The forestry sector has traditionally been one of the most organized sectors with more than a century old tradition of scientific management. From ancient times forests have played a very important role in social economic and religious activities of the local people. However, of late, forests have been adversely affected by several factors, which include rapid increase in human & livestock population, insufficient infrastructure, and diversion of forest areas for development activities. Several other problems unique to forestry sectors are inadequate public awareness about multiple roles of forests, low investments in forestry, sectors are inadequate public awareness about multiple roles of forests, low investments in forestry, inadequate people’s participation, technological weakness and insufficient funds and facilities. To obviate the crisis facing the forestry, the National forest policy was revised in 1988 with the principal aim to bring in focus the importance of forests for environmental stability & ecological balance including atmospheric equilibrium, which are vital for sustenance of all life forms-human, animals & plants, by conserving the natural heritage of the country. The policy gives priority to conservation of forests and biodiversity. The derivation of economic benefit has been subordinated to the principal aim.

Through the garden of flowers: At Ziro Festival Location
Flowers on one side and paddy fields on one and grasslands on another. It was a out of the world location for a music, nature and culture festival. The first day saw things being readied for the beginning of the grand concert in ZIro Valley in Arunachal Pradesh.
Ziro is situated in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, 167 kms from the capital Itanagar. It can be reached via road from Guwahati or Dibrugarh towns in Assam.
A spectacular location, open air gigs, campfires, tents and living in the outdoors amidst picturesque landscapes are just some of the things that wait to refresh your mind at Ziro. Artistes from across the country met likeminded individuals hailing from different parts of the globe. Last year, the festival saw over 150 musicians, artists, and creative minds be a part of this cultural celebration.
This year, Ziro Festival of Music's second edition saw a great curated line-up of musicians such as Whirling Kalapas from Mumbai, Lee Ranaldo and Stevel Shelley from USA, Menwhopause from Delhi, Sky Rabbit from Mumbai, Imphal Talkies from Imphal, Dosser's Urge from Shillong, Shaair + Func from Mumbai and many more.
Just 167km from the capital, Itanagar, Ziro is one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh. Situated in a valley, it is at a height of over 5500 feet above sea level, with a beautiful view of the mountains that surround it.
Ziro is primarily home to the Apatanis -- simple, friendly and hospitable people with an interesting culture and legacy. They are a non-nomadic, agrarian tribe who share a responsible relationship with nature. Apatanis cultivate permanent wet land cultivations instead of dry land cultivations which involves burning forests. Ziro valley is lush with paddy farms and is known for its unique paddy cum fi sh cultivation where using traditional irrigation methods, farmers rear fish in the knee-deep water. Keeping them company are the adorable, shy, and harmless Indian Bisons.
