Flying Australia - Kununurra to Ord River Dam
This video was filmed on 17th June 2016 using a GoPro Hero 3+ attached to the right wing strut of Cessna 172 VH-ICH. The flight commences at Kununurra Airport in Western Australia, then follows the Ord River for 55kms to the Ord River Dam. Making a left turn after takeoff, our track takes us past the Ord River Diversion Dam and Lake Kununurra. The lake formed behind the dam in 1963 to become part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme. Further upstream, the lake narrows and reverts to its original status as the Ord River, travelling through the Carlton Gorge and eventually reaching the wall of the Ord River Dam. Behind the 98 metre dam wall lies the 1000 sq.km expanse of Lake Argyle, Australia's most under-utilised lake.

Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra, Western Australia
The Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra is Western Australia's biggest outback celebration. Over 10 days, it showcases the extraordinary diversity, talent and culture of the Kimberley communities and the awe-inspiring natural beauty of one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth.
As Frank Rodriguez, co-founder of the event, and the people of Kununurra prepared to host the 14th annual Ord Valley Muster, Tourism Western Australia caught up with some of the local characters that make this celebration a must-see.
Meet Spike, founder of The Hoochery -- the longest operating legal distillery in Western Australia. The Hoochery was the venue for the first ever Muster, and today hosts the ever-more popular Ord Valley Muster Comedy Show.
Meet Stockman Mitch Bradford, one of the riders competing in the Kununurra Bushman's Rodeo; Andrea Bolten of the Community Choir, who performed in Music Under the Stars; the extraordinary Waringarri Corriboree; and Matt Bamkin of 42 Decibel, one of the many great music acts creating the event crescendo, known as the Kimberley Moon Experience.

KUNUNURRA WA WESTERN AUSTRALIA
caravan trip 2007
Kununurra is a town in far northern Western Australia located at the eastern side of the Kimberley Region close to the border with the Northern Territory. It is the largest town in Western Australia north of Broome, with 5,485 inhabitants, many of whom are Indigenous Australians. It is 3040 kilometres from Perth by road.
Kununurra comes from the Miriwoong language and means big water. The town is located close to the confluence of the Ord and the Dunham River. Lake Argyle, Australia's largest artificial lake, over 100 km² in size, is 72 km from the town. The town is relatively new and was gazetted in the late 1950s, at the time that the Ord River Irrigation scheme was set up.
The scheme involved damming the Ord River and building a diversion dam 50km downstream so that the waters can be directed to irrigate about 750 km² of land. By 1966 there were 31 farms on the Ord River plains. By 1972 the second stage of the scheme was completed with the opening of the Lake Argyle Dam.
Kununurra AirportThe town also has a 'Celebrity Tree Park' with many trees planted by famous people including Rolf Harris. The town has many local attractions, including waterfalls, gorges and ranges. It was voted the second best town to live in in Australia for outdoor adventure by Outdoor Australia magazine in the March/April 2007 edition.
The landscape surrounding Kununurra includes features such as Valentine Spring, Black Rock Creek and Middle Springs along with many other waterfalls and swimming holes. Popular fishing spots include Ivanhoe Crossing, The Diversion Dam, Buttons Crossing, and various locations along the Dunham and Ord Rivers.
