The mosque named after Imam 'Muhammad al-Bukhari' (810-870 AD or 194-256 AH)is one of the oldest mosques in Osh city.
The second biggest city in this country, Osh, has this large, central mosque. The original and formal name is Imam Al-Bukhari Mosque. But unofficially the word Alay was added to the end of its name after the recent violence, making it Imam al-Bukhari-Alay Mosque.
Alay (or Alai) is a mountainous district southeast of Osh, known as a strongly Kyrgyz nationalist region. During the violence, many Kyrgyz allegedly came from Alay to participate in the rioting between Kyrgyz people and Uzbek group in and/or around Osh region.

The rock also contains the National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex Sulayman that was built during the Soviet era, showing archaeological findings from the area and its history. The lower slope of the mountain is surrounded by a cemetery.

Osh (Kyrgyz: Ош, Russian: Ош, Uzbek: O'sh) is the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan, located in the Fergana Valley in the south of the country and often referred to as the capital of the south. It is the oldest city in the country (estimated to be more than 3000 years old), and has served as the administrative center of Osh Region since 1939. The city has an ethnically mixed population of about 255,800 in 2012, comprising Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Russians, Tajiks, and other smaller ethnic groups.At least 24 people are feared dead after a massive landslide buried a village in southern Kyrgyzstan, according to government sources of the central Asian republic.
The landslide happened at around 7am (local time) on Saturday when about one million cubic metres of mud buried the village of Ayu, in the Uzgen district, Osh region, which buried seven inhabited houses.
Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambayev has instructed to take all necessary measures to remedy the disaster and assist the victims' families, according to a statement released by the presidential spokesman.
However, the spokesman for the Ministry of Emergency Situations also pointed out that last March the inhabitants of 11 houses in Ayu were warned they had to abandon their homes and move to safer ground due to the elevated risk of landslide.
Four of the 11 forewarned families did heed the authorities' advice and abandoned their homes which also ended buried under the landslide.The landslide, caused by heavy rains, destroyed eleven houses in the village in Uzgen district of Osh region at around 0120 GMT on Saturday. The exact number of people hit by the landslide was unclear, the Emergency Ministry said.

The city's industrial base, established during the Soviet period, largely collapsed after the break-up of the Soviet Union and has recently only started to revive. The proximity of the Uzbekistan border, which cuts through historically linked territories and settlements, deprives Osh of much of its former hinterland and presents a serious obstacle to trade and economic development. Daily flights from Osh Airport link Osh - and hence the southern part of Kyrgyzstan - to Bishkek and the north. Osh has two railway stations and a railway connection to Andijan in neighbouring Uzbekistan, but no passenger traffic and only sporadic freight traffic. Most transport is by road. The recent upgrading of the long and arduous road through the mountains to Bishkek has greatly improved communications.
The city has several monuments, including one to the southern Kyrgyz queen Kurmanjan Datka and one of the few remaining statues of Lenin. A Russian Orthodox church, reopened after the rk of antiquity known as the “Stone Tower”, which Claudius Ptolemy wrote about in his famous work Geography (Ptolemy). It marked the midpoint on the ancient Silk Road, the overland trade route taken by caravans between Europe and Asia.[3] The National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex Sulayman is carved in the mountain, containing a collection of archaeological, geological and historical finds and information about local flora and fauna.
Its first western-style supermarket Narodnyj opened in March 2007.[4]
Administration[edit]
Osh city (Ош шаар - Osh shaar) covers 182.5 square kilometres (70.5 square miles)[1] and like the capital city Bishkek, is administered separately and not part of any region, although it is the seat of Osh Region. Besides the city proper, 11 villages are administered by the city: Almalyk, Arek, Gulbaar-Toloykon, Japalak, Kengesh, Kerme-Too, Orke, Pyatiletka, Teeke and parts of Ozgur and Tölöykön.[1]
