- The Otavalo Market in Otavalo, Ecuador is South America's largest street market. I spent the day eating my way around town, talking with random vendors and trying on some hats. The Otavalo Market is just a two hour bus ride from Quito, Ecuador and Saturday is the most popular day to visit.

The indigenous Otavalo people are famous for weaving textiles which are sold at the Saturday market when almost one third of the town becomes full of stalls.

Otavalo Market, Ecuador
Otavalo is a small town in Ecuador, located approximately 2 hours north of Quito on the Panamerican Highway. It has about 50.000 inhabitants.
The busiest market day is Saturday, but the markets in Otavalo are open every day.
Some of the most interesting buys available here include handmade alpaca sweaters, soft alpaca scarves, wool fedoras, colorful straw bags, hand-embroidered blouses, and ceramics,
Through the Otavalo Market & Condor Park
In this Travel Vlog I make a day trip from Quito to Otavalo. Famed for its market, I started the day off with the often overlooked Condor Park. This place is amazing. Wit two daily performances, you get to see owls, hawks, eagles and condors up close.
After that, I shopped the market, one of the largest in Latin America. It's best known for it's colorful textiles. I got to try my hand at some bartering.
I finished my day trip up with some beers at Cava Caran. My personal favourite? One infused with cactus.

OTAVALO MARKET IN ECUADOR
Otavalo is the best choice for a one-day trip from Quito. Otavaleños are very nice people. Otavalo Market is located on Plaza de los Ponchos with many local shops with handmade products.

Otavalo Animal Market - Ecuador
Saturday morning is when the Farmers Market happens in Otavalo. A very interesting part of this is the weekly Animal Market - don't miss it. It is basically over by early afternoon so go early and you have plenty of time for the handcrafts and produce market later.
Here animals are bought and sold. This is an actual market for the locals living in the villages and valleys around Otavalo. Most tourists just stay in town and go to the handcrafts and food market, so you will not see many tourists. But the sights are great.
The noise, sounds and for sure the smell you will not forget quickly. It is very hard to show in a few minutes what you can experience for two hours or more. Only about 6 or 7 blocks from the centre of town.
