Outback Aussie's love for Saturn took him from Broken Hill to NASA | 60 Minutes Australia
When Trevor Barry dropped out of school he looked down. And why wouldn’t he? Like many young men in Broken Hill back in the 1960s, working in the local mines was an obvious career choice. For 34 years that’s exactly what Trevor did. Then one day, instead of looking down he looked up, and what he saw changed his life forever. Today 67-year-old Trevor is an amateur astronomer, but not just any backyard stargazer. His work – especially making discoveries about the planet Saturn – is so impressive that he has NASA, the biggest space agency in the world, knocking on his door.

World Record Stargazing Attempt 21 August 2015
Broken Hill participated in the 2015 World Record Stargazing effort to make it into the Guinness Book of Records. Jason King put this video together to celebrate the effort. 222 people in Broken Hill were included in the official count. Australia wide the number was about 8,500. Mt Stromlo Observatory was the lead organiser. Thanks to Brad who managed all the sites across Australia, about 40 of them. In Broken Hill, we must thank Gary Radford and John Burcher for their hard work in preparing the official gazing zones, with Travis Nadge! Also a big thank you to Consolidated Crane Hire who donated massive cranes to hang lights over the car parking area. Also a big thank you to the Trustees of the Broken Hill Race Course - a most awesome venue to stargaze.
We had perfect conditions - crystal clear skies, ambient temperature, no breeze or dust. Just a lovely atmosphere. Another big thank you to Gary Bowden for the music and Peter Harvey for the roving mic, capably used by Andrew Schmidt (thanks Andrew, our MC). Thanks to the Legacy Club for the sausage sizzle and steak sandwiches. Thanks to Consolidated crew who managed the car park. Also, thanks to our official registration personnel - Lindy, Cheryl, Wayne, Peter, Heather, Tatjana, Heidi - and our gazing zone stewards - Dennis, Gary, Tracey, Mandy, Armando and Sarah! Thanks to Tania for managing the films of Broken Hill in the Pavilion. Also, a very big thank you to Mayor Wincen Cuy and Deputy Mayor Dave Gallagher for being the independent witnesses for the Broken Hill event.

The Future of Broken Hill
The Sheds of Broken Hill
When is a shed not a shed? When it’s in Broken Hill it seems. Within these sheds you'll find the fruits of lifelong obsessions - tools, historical relics, vinyl records (33s and 78s), exquisite vehicles - and these collections continue to grow by the day. We met a few of Broken Hill's proudest shed owners, and took a wander through their pride and joy.

Goldtown
Made by The National Film Board 1948. Directed by R Maslyn Williams. Much of the romance associated with the development of the gold industry is to be found at Kalgoorlie on the golden mile, that rich strip of Western Australian territory. This film illustrates life in the town and the work of the miners: the school of mining, the vast store of mining tradition, the old-time prospectors who still search the surrounding countryside for new and fabulous strikes. It takes the viewer underground, deep into the galleries where the gold holding rock is blasted out, and shows the intricate business of separating the valuable metal from the rock that is undertaken on the surface.

YOUR4X4 Episode 134: Broken Hill Part 1
This week we are exploring one of Australia’s most known gateways to the Outback - Broken Hill.
A popular kick off point or fuel stop for outback touring from the Eastern states, broken Hill is awash with history, appeal, sights and scenes that are well worth the time to explore.
For our first episode we join up with local identities and one of Australia’s most awarded tour guide companies, Tri State Safaris. But far from your typical outback tour, we are in for a real treat, as Mick and Joe from Tri State take us to a little known and highly protected location that is host to the world’s largest collection of ancient petroglyphs. Carved by the local aboriginals and dated to at least 11,000 years old, it’s an incredible experience to walk amongst such a site.
This episode also has plenty of off road touring, takes in the Living Desert Sculptures and we finish with a local astronomer for some outback star gazing.
